Deep Purple: Ian Gillan (vocals, harmonica, congas); Ritchie Blackmore (guitar); Jon Lord (keyboards, synthesizer); Roger Glover (synthesizer, bass); Ian Paice (drums). Recorded at Horizons, Stowe, Vermont. Digitally remastered by Suha Ger (Universal Music Group Studios). Personnel: Ritchie Blackmore (guitar); Jon Lord (keyboards); Roger Glover (synthesizer); Ian Paice (drums). Audio Remixer: Suha Gur. Recording information: Horizons, Stowe, VT. Photographers: George Bodnar; Mickey Gregory . Unknown Contributor Roles: Ian Gillan; Ian Paice; Jon Lord; Ritchie Blackmore. Deep Purple's definitive Mark II lineup reunited for 1984's Perfect Strangers. It is one of the better examples of a reunion album, although the band's uneasy camaraderie only lasted a few more years. "Knocking at Your Back Door" opens the album with a roar. Ian Gillan's lyrics don't make much sense, but Ritchie Blackmore's guitar riffs and Ian Paice's thunderous drumming carry this song as well as the rest of the album. The robotic rhythm of the title cut relies on Jon Lord's organ work. The 1999 remastered reissue features the bonus track "Son of Alerik." This fascinating, mid-tempo, ten-minute instrumental was the B-side of the "Perfect Strangers" 12" single in the U.K. ~ Bret Adams In the early '80s, many of the top metal acts of the past had either disbanded or soldiered on despite the loss of founding members. Deep Purple had officially disbanded in 1976, with only two original members present in the final lineup, but by 1984, the classic lineup of vocalist Ian Gillan, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, bassist Roger Glover, drummer Ian Paice, and keyboardist Jon Lord had reunited. Responsible for such classics as MACHINE HEAD and MADE IN JAPAN, the group was considered amongst metal's elite, and judging from its first comeback album, 1984's PERFECT STRANGERS, DEEP PURPLE hadn't lost its magic touch in the slightest. The album was a major worldwide hit, going platinum in the U.S., and spawning several rock radio hits. Despite the changes that occurred in the musical landscape during the band's absence, the group did not change its sound much for the reunion, sticking to the ingredients that made them so exceptional in the first place--Gillan's wailing vocals, Blackmore's shredding guitar, and the rock-steady three-part rhythm section. The title track recalls Led Zeppelin's sprawling epics ("Kashmir," etc.), while the melodic rockers "Knocking At Your Back Door" and "Nobody's Home" prove to be standouts as well.Q (10/99, p.147) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...proved an engagingly effective comeback, its regal title track echoing past glories while 'Knocking At Your Back Door' saw screamer Ian Gillan cracking schoolboyish jokes about cunning linguists..." Deep Purple Perfect Strangers Songs Perfect Strangers Music Review Average Rating: (4.1 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews The Perfect return for Mark II One of 1984's finest albums. It's not the best Deep Purple album but it is a nice return for the Mark II line up. Bright spots include Knocking at your back door, Under the gun, Perfect strangers and the unbelievably cool bonus track Son of Alerik. It's worth it just for the line..."So we put her on the hit list of a common cunning linguist." From Knocking at your back door. Submitted by a reviewer (Indiana, U.S.A.) Was This Review Helpful? "The winning team united..." Deep Purple mark II were back with a vengeance in 1984 with this classic rock album. OK, so it's not as good as the classics from 1970-75, but it runs rings around all the glam/hair rock like Bon Jovi, Europe and Twisted sister that were knocking around in the 1980s! "Knocking at your back door" has to be one of the most hardest hitting songs ever performed - and then there's the haunting "Perfect Strangers". Gillain's vocals wails across the oceans of time, Blackmore's guitar weeps its leading riffs, Lord's keyboard is still as holy as that you'd hear in an Anglican church - but with shades of rock, Paice keeps up the beat with great syncopation, and glover holds up the helm with his easy-going bass lines. "The winning team united living for the crowd" as Gillain triumphantly sings in Hungry daze" (and I can't agree more!) Yess!! One of my favorite albums! ...and one of Purples best! I`m a fan, and I have all of Purples stuff. It`s a hardrocking and great comeback-album. Always thought of it as one of their darker albums...you`ll find that it grows after listening through it some times. Not a bad track really.. Audio Mixer: Martin Birch. Recording information: Musicland Studios, Munich, Germany (02/20/1975-03/14/1975). Perhaps the first example of "dragon rock" -- a style perfected by bands like Iron Maiden and Dio in the early to mid-'80s -- was Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, a 1975 collection from the guitarist's first post-Deep Purple project. Fittingly enough, a young Ronnie James Dio ...

| | Rainbow Long Live Rock 'N' Roll CD (1978) Remastered
Perfect Strangers
$6.49 Rainbow includes: Ronnie James Dio (vocals); Ritchie Blackmore (guitar); Cozy Powell (drums). All tracks have been digitally remastered. Long Live Rock 'n' Roll may be singer Ronnie James Dio's last album with Rainbow, but at least he went out on a high note. While the material is not quite as strong as on the previous studio effort, Rising, Long Live Rock 'n' Roll maintains the momentum the band had built up. "Kill the King" had been previously heard on the live On Stage record, but here it sounds more fully realized. Also, the title track from the album stands as one of the best songs the band did, not to mention a noble sentiment. The chugging "L.A. Connection" is another highlight. As with all of their first four albums, this one was produced by Martin Birch (who produced everyone from Blue Öyster Cult to Wayne County), and he really knows how to get the best out of the band by this point. The result is that the songs couldn't sound any better, so even if some of the material isn't quite up to their best, the album is still very ...

Personnel: Ian Gillan (vocals, harmonica, congas); Ritchie Blackmore (guitar); Jon Lord (keyboards); Roger Glover (synthesizer, bass guitar); Ian Paice (drums). Recording information: Playhouse, Stowe, VT. Illustrator: Dieter Zill. Though it was considered a disappointment upon its release (indeed, its production was much too sleek at times, and it lacked the creative daring of Perfect Strangers), 1987's House of Blue Light has actually stood the test of time just as well, if not better, than its predecessor. The second effort from the ...
