(5 Customer Reviews)
Recorded live during the Joshua Tree Tour in the U.S. and Europe in 1987.
The aural companion to the band documentary of the same name, RATTLE AND HUM is where U2's began to tire of being the anthem-making rock heroes they had become in the '80s. That's not to say the songs didn't approach serious subject matter, but there was more musical and lyrical diversity than on albums past. They repeatedly play with the rock & roll myth throughout RATTLE AND HUM, covering the Beatles' "Helter Skelter" and Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower," casting aspersions on "the golden age of pop" on "God Part II" and busting out their own blistering version of the Bo Diddley beat on the irresistible "Desire."
The band began to explore American roots music as well. "Angel of Harlem," a tune about Billie Holiday, was recorded in Memphis' famed Sun Studios. Bono makes his first official Gospel foray on "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For." The lads from Dublin even collaborate with B.B. King on "When Love Comes To Town." RATTLE & HUM is wonderfully schizophrenic, full of passion and ambition.

Rolling Stone - 3.5 Stars - Very Good CMJ (1/5/04, p.26) - Ranked #7 in CMJ's "Top 20 Most-Played Albums of 1989" Rattle & Hum Music Review Average Rating: (4.4 out of 5 stars) A Forgotten Gem I think this album is underatted. Of course there are better U2 offerings but if you take this album for what its worth its a damn good listen. Hawkmoon 269 is one of the bands best songs ever!!! and thats saying something. I love the live version of Silver and Gold, (Bono being Bono). Give it a listen and see if you agree. Submitted by jsonoqui (Sunny So Cal) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

under rated I think u2 did ok with the studio stuff here. it packs a punch without being too pompous and has none of that faux irony that infected them in the 90s. indeed, the live stuff does sound weaker by comparison. it may be the recording, it may be the songs chosen, but they perhaps should have made more of the studio recordings - could have done a double... one live, one not. that's where the fifth stars has gone anyway.
don't hold out much hope for the atomic bomb album though. recorded twice... two producers... this long in the making? 'vertigo' as the lead single? i think it'll stiff. 'boy' may be their best after all. Submitted by mark (west midlands. uk.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
In the locust wind... For those of you who don't remember the 1980's, U2 were the big band of the decade. After the release of the anthematic "Joshua tree" album that gave rise to 5 or 6 hit singles, the band embarked on a mission to play in every massive stadium in the world to every person in the world. All this was very nice at the time however the band quickly got bored with the fame and hype and this album documents the transition from the stadium band to the reinvented U2.
And there are some cracking tunes on this LP..."Angel of Harlem", "Heartland" and "When love comes to town" featuring the great B.B.King being a few of them. The weaker material, ironically, includes the live material from the tour...
So out with the old and in with the (then) new; suffer the live stuff and enjoy the studio gems.
