(1 Customer Review)
Widely considered Marianne Faithfull's best album, BROKEN ENGLISH has a hazy, bleary-eyed expressiveness that matches atmosphere with emotional impact. Throughout the 1960s and '70s Faithfull was generally considered a shooting star in the pop firmament, a passing flavor not to be taken seriously by serious music listeners. But 1979's BROKEN ENGLISH changed that with its stylistic curveballs and dark, disconcerting vibe.
The album is steeped in the synthesizer sounds typical of the era; but where this tends to date most releases from the time, it works beautifully here. The pulsing surge of the synths balances nicely with Faithfull's sluggish, tattered-sounding voice (the title track is a perfect example). Other album highlights include the bluesy, off-kilter "Brain Drain," and her slicing cover of John Lennon's "Working Class Hero." While compilations will provide a comprehensive look at her work, BROKEN ENGLISH is the Faithfull studio album to get.
Recorded in 1979.

Broken English album
$7.59 With the exception of Bob Dylan, few rock n' rollers explored poetry within the rock format as thoroughly as Patti Smith. By the mid-70's, Smith had been a regular poetry-reader in New York City clubs for years, and with a deep admiration for The Rolling Stones, it was only natural to set these poems to music. With an exciting rock band to back her up (including renowned music critic Lenny Kaye on guitar), Smith built up a following on the strength of the band's trance-inducing live shows and her thrillingly liberated vocal style, which built on Dylan's mid '60s expressiveness with ecstatic, octave-jumping yelps.
Produced by ex-Velvet Underground bassist John Cale, HORSES was considered 'punk rock' when it was first released, but there was much more to it. Smith had a gift for being able to paint vivid pictures with her prose, as evidenced by a pair of 10-minute long epics, "Birdland" and "Land" (which consisted of 3 sections--"Horses," "Land of A Thousand Dances," and "La Mer"). Other tracks are more conventional, yet ...

| | Emmylou Harris Elite Hotel CD (1975) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Broken English songs
$5.99 On her second album ELITE HOTEL, Emmylou Harris follows the blueprint she established with PIECES OF THE SKY. She even draws songs from many of the same sources, going to the well one more time for songs by Rodney Crowell ("Till I Gain Control Again") and the Beatles ("Here, There, and Everywhere"). With guitar legend James Burton, pianist Bill Payne, and singer Linda Ronstadt among the returning guests, the supporting cast also echoes that of PIECES. Whereas that album only hinted at Harris' potential commercial success, however, ELITE HOTEL delivers on the promise. With three top-five singles ("Together Again," "One of These Days," and "Sweet Dreams"), HOTEL established Harris as one of country's premier artists.
HOTEL goes further than Harris' previous album in acknowledging her debt to her mentor, country-rock avatar Gram Parsons. Three Parsons songs ("Sin City," "Wheels," and "Ooh Las Vegas") appear here, and other selections clearly reflect Parsons preferences ...
| | Wilco Sky Blue Sky CD (2007) Enhanced CD
Broken English album
$10.79 Of course this is still Jeff Tweedy's band, which means SKY BLUE SKY never strays too far from what has emerged as a basic Wilco template. The constantly shifting Chicago ensemble (in its umpteenth incarnation by the album's release) still displays an instrumental precision and studio professionalism while working within a newfangled roots template, and Tweedy himself remains as searching as always, both lyrically and musically. With nary a rave-up in sight, the album could be criticized for being overly serene, but in a career marked by nearly constant tumult and controversy, it's more appropriate ...
| | Jam Gift CD (1982) Remastered
Broken English CD music
$10.59 As rock musicians from Pete Townshend to Ray Davies could tell you, growing up in public is no piece of crumpet. Especially if the rest of the musicians you work with aren't growing in the same direction. While tension can bring out the best in a band, it also shortens the shelf life of the average rock & roll aggregation considerably. This, alas, was also the case with the Jam. Although the group started out as mod revivalists, leader and primary songwriter Paul Weller soon began to feel constricted by the limitations of the guitar/bass/drums palette and by the reluctance of bassist Bruce Foxton and drummer Richard Buckler to abandon the ...

From there she played with another popular group, Kessler’s Friends. Susan founded Da Mudcats with Jim Rosen in 1986 and spent the subsequent 7 years traveling and playing out her blues jones. While with Da Mudcats, she shared the stage with blues royalty such as Koko Taylor, Buddy Guy, Eddie Clearwater and Bo Diddley. She is the featured vocalist on Da Mudcats self-titled first release and has done session work for many other Louisville artists. After leaving Da Mudcats, she formed Susan O’Neil and the Blues Hounds who played locally for another ...
