Musica Tradicional Cubana, Vol. 1 CD music
$12.49 The strong and powerful influence of African music is hard to miss on this CD, which illustrates the rich cultural heritage of blacks in Bahia and Northeastern Brazil (a region that has produced many musical greats). Legends like Tito Puente, Tito Rodriguez, and Machito were on the scene, so aspiring young salseros assumed they had no choice but to give 200 percent. The percussionist and his longtime partner Andy Gonzales bring that unwavering work ethic to On the Move! (Muevete!), an outstanding live date recorded at Bimbo's 365 Club in San Francisco. When a 65-year-old Oquendo and his band Libre tear into Bobby Capo's familiar cha-cha "Piel Canela" and infectious originals like "No Cuentes," ...
| | Best Of Flaco Jimenez CD (1999)
Musica Tradicional Cubana, Vol. 1 music CDs
$13.59 Flaco Jimenez's storied career saw him straddling the line between traditionalist and pioneer in the musical stew that was the border region of Texas. While well-known for his forays into popular music with fellow San Antonians Doug Sahm and Freddy Fender--most notably on Sahm's 1973 release, SIR DOUG AND HIS BAND, and later in the San Antonio supergroup Texas Tornados--Jimenez is a purist at heart, and the 1999 release THE BEST OF FLACO JIMENEZ looks past his collaborations ...
| | Van Halen Best Of 1 CD (1996) (Import) Bonus Track; Japan
Musica Tradicional Cubana, Vol. 1 songs
$41.39 Digitally remastered by Chris Bellman (Bernie Grundman Studios, Los Angeles, California).
This is a solid overview of the first two incarnations of hard rock heroes Van Halen.
Almost evenly split between tracks that feature glammy showman David Lee Roth and those that feature earthy screecher Sammy Hagar, BEST OF VOLUME I seems designed to let this pioneering hard-rock band's fans compare and contrast between its two frontmen. As if to drive the exercise home, BEST OF features three tunes cut in '96--two of them with Roth, who had been estranged from the band since 1985, and one with Hagar ("Humans Being," originally released on the soundtrack to TWISTER).
Otherwise, BEST OF presents the hits in chronological order, beginning with the unadorned, aggressive sound of the early Roth material. Powered by guitarist Eddie Van Halen's hammer-on notes and orchestral pyrotechnics, and lightened up by Roth's used-car-salesman-on-a-bender persona, "Ain't Talkin 'Bout Love" and "Runnin' With The Devil" are as close to pure, perfect hard rock as anyone is ever likely to come. The early '80s found the band incorporating synthesizers (played by Eddie) and a pop sensibility, resulting in megahits like "Jump."
Things changed again when Hagar replaced Roth and took the band further from its roots, toward an expansive new sound with broader new arrangements, heard here in such pop hits as "Dreams" and "Right Now." Refusing to tip ...

| | Jo Jo Gunne Jumpin' The Gunne CD (1973)
Musica Tradicional Cubana, Vol. 1 CD music
$11.59 Jay Ferguson wrote all ten of the songs on Jumpin' the Gunne, an album produced by Bill Szymczyk and the third disc by this offshoot of the group Spirit's. By this time, Mark Andes was gone -- he would join Firefall and later Heart -- leaving his brother Matt Andes on guitar and Jay Ferguson on keyboards, lead vocals, and second guitar, and leaving them to their own devices. There is just something that doesn't catch on here. "At the Spa" and "Monkey Music" both have their moments, but in these grooves there is none of the intensity of their first hit "Run Run Run" or Ferguson's later signature tune, "Thunder Island," which came during the middle of Firefall's string of hits. "To the Island" isn't "Thunder Island" by any stretch, while "Getaway" sounds a bit like a Doobie Brothers outtake. Jo Jo Gunne was a decent concert pairing opening for the Doobies after their Run Run Run debut LP. The sounds on "Couldn't Love You Better" pretty much sum up this disc -- nondescript album rock with an LP cover which is the most politically incorrect sight you can imagine. All four bandmembers are in a big brass bed staring at the ceiling where a large and flabby woman is floating through the room while a small pig looks up at her. On the inside cover the pig and the large woman are nose to nose, and the album credits are written on the woman the way you see cuts of beef written out on a drawing of a cow at a butcher shop. If this is supposed to be funny or hip, it isn't, and the concept falls flatter than the music. The enigma of ...
