This opens with the majestic, Matthew Sweet-circa-100% Fun "Closer to the Ground." But the album's tone changes throughout, making for a varied, eclectic ride. The airy "Chimayo" comes with shadings of Burt Bacharach, breezy harmonies, and muted trumpets. The sad and slow "Down in My Mind" is a cloistered bit of countrified sentiment, all wrapped up in sparse, bluesy guitar licks. And "Diamond in a Garbage Can" -- with lines like "she's the rotten apple of her daddy's eye," "leaning up against the pawnshop door/I could see she wasn't an ordinary whore," and "she's too sad to be so young" -- is a mid-tempo ramble in the vein of the progressive roots music of the mid-'70s. "Goodnight Moon" ends the set. It's a lullaby-like ode to leaving home with lilting tuba, euphonium, and alto sax by David Jacques. Will Kimbrough's guitar work -- which can also be heard on albums by Kim Richey, Matthew Ryan, Josh Rouse, Amy Rigby, and Jess Klein -- is seamless, and his vocals, which lie somewhere between those of Neil Finn and Gram Parsons, are sweet and warm. ~ Travis Drageset
Nashville-based guitarist Kimbrough has been in such demand (playing for folks like Tommy Womack, Todd Snider, Josh Rouse, Kim Richey and many more) that it was hard for him to record his own stuff. But luckily for everyone, he found the time and has delivered this disc, This. It`s a ten song set of terrific tunes from the Beatles/Tim Finn-like guitar pop of "Closer To The Ground" to the more rural, more contemplative tones of "Diamond In A Garbage Can." No doubt about it, This is a winner. (M.O.M.)

This album
$38.09 DREAMS is a 4-CD box set compiling in chronological order tracks by the Allman Brothers Band, as well as tracks by bands featuring one or more member of the Allman Brothers Band and solo performances by Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts.
Recorded between 1966 & 1988. Includes a 32-page illustrated booklet and liner notes by John Swenson.
Like nearly all box sets, DREAMS has plenty to recommend it-and a few nagging drawbacks. The set's chief shortcoming is its two conflicting goals: providing an overview of the Allmans' history, thus attracting buyers seeking the ultimate hits package, and including enough unreleased tracks and rarities to appeal to the band's most devoted fans. As a result, DREAMS is neither the definitive Allman Brothers collection nor the gift to hardcore fans that, say, THE BOOTLEG SERIES is to Dylan-philes.
DREAMS' strengths are considerable. First and foremost, the box contains nearly five wall-to-wall hours of great music. By including everything from early demos to Gregg Allman and Dickie Betts' solo material, DREAMS does a great job of tracing the group's musical evolution from hippie blues band to kings of Southern rock. And, while the unreleased studio version of "Statesboro Blues" included here isn't definitive, it's still mighty good-as are the set's ...
| | Poco Forgotten Trail (1969-74) CDs (1990)
This CD music
$15.95 This compilation contains 38 songs, including many new remixes from original master tapes, 6 previously unreleased songs, alternate versions of 3 others, and a comprehensive 36 page booklet, with historic liner notes and photos.
This excellent two-disc collection captures Poco's finest moments from the days when they were laying down the template for all the country-rock music that was to follow. It's hard to remember, but when the Eagles first hit the scene, they were thought by many to be a Poco-wannabe band. Listen to this set and you'll hear why. The Forgotten Trail (1969-1974) culls tracks from Poco's first eight albums, as well as unreleased cuts and singles. From the classic anthem "Pickin' Up the Pieces," which kicks things off, through "You Better Think Twice," "C'mon," "Kind Woman," "From the Inside," "A Good Feelin' to Know," "Crazy Eyes," and on and on, this is wonderful music, ahead of its time in many ways. If Poco had arrived on the scene in the early '90s, they would have been kings of the country charts. Of course, without Poco, country music wouldn't have taken on the rock trappings that it did in the '80s and '90s. As it was, the band was considered too country for the Top 40 rock format of the time, and too rock & roll for country radio. This set is the place to start for an appreciation of the original Poco, when the group was considered to be Richie Furay's band. All the ingredients are here that made their music so delightful: the trademark high-vocal ...
| | Hotcakes & Outtakes: 30 Years Of Little Feat CDs (2000) Box Set
This music CDs
$51.49 HOTCAKES & OUTTAKES was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Album Notes.
Based in their original incarnation around the genius of Lowell George, Little Feat's legacy has left them overlooked by the general listening public, despite a wide-ranging style that embraces blues, country, gospel, jazz, and funk. This sumptuous four-CD set impressively chronicles this mercurial band's pre- and post- Lowell George journey with rare photos, essays, and track-by-track reminisces from band members, along with a disc chock-full of rarities and outtakes.
Throughout HOTCAKES, it's hard to disagree with liner notes author Bud Scoppa's opinion that Little Feat is as rootsy as the Band, as funky as the Meters, and as cerebral as Steely Dan. Early numbers like "Willin'," "Tripe Face Boogie," and "Cold, Cold, Cold" find Little Feat going from eclectic country-fried boogie, to a syncopated New Orleans sound upon the arrival of Sam Clayton and Kenny Gradney, to more familiar fare like "Dixie Chicken" and "Fat Man in the Bathtub." By the time George cut his only solo album THANKS I'LL EAT IT HERE (represented here by "20 Million Things"), Little Feat were disbanding, but ...
| | Warren Zevon Wind CD (2003)
This songs
$15.89 THE WIND won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. "Keep Me in Your Heart" was nominated for Song Of The Year and for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. "Disorder in the House" won for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal and was also nominated for Best Rock Song.
With the specter of a terminal lung cancer diagnosis hanging over his head, Warren Zevon responded by rallying to make THE WIND, an album that found him working with longtime collaborator and friend Jorge Calderon, shortly after getting the news. The result is a tight group of 11 songs wrapped up in a year, despite a diagnosis that only gave Zevon three months to live. Along the way, plenty of famous names--both friends and fans--pitched in, including Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, Emmylou Harris, Jackson Browne, Dwight Yoakam and Don Henley. Allusions to his situation are naturally sprinkled throughout, whether it's partying in the face of doom ("The Rest of the Night"), using a self-penned blues song to look back with no regrets ("Rub Me Raw"), or pledging his eternal love ("El Amor De Mi Vida"). Even Zevon's cover of "Knockin' on Heaven's Door," avoids the pitfall of sentimentality as he can be heard bellowing "open up, open up" in the background of the song's chorus sung by Tommy Shaw, John Waite, and Billy Bob Thornton. "Keep Me in Your Heart" finds ...
| | Lucinda Williams Live @ The Fillmore West CDs (2005) Digipak
This album
$15.09 Never one to tread the expected path, Lucinda Williams followed her big breakthrough album, CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD, with a pair of low-key records full of sad, quiet, fragile songs (interrupted by the occasional barn-burner). LIVE @ THE FILLMORE concentrates heavily on those latter two releases, unleashing all the intense, burning emotions that lay at their core, making plain the inherent frisson lurking below the surface of such ostensibly laconic tunes as "Lonely Girls" and "Righteously." Meanwhile, songs that already had plenty of bite in their studio versions are pumped up to an even more electrifying, visceral level (a bold, crunching "Changed the Locks;" ...

This CD music
$17.75 The arrangements on Infrared are lush, rich in texture and studio dynamics. The core gems in the sonic jewelry of magnificent artifice are Scarlet Life vocalists Julie Axis and Christy C. Smith. Their harmonies, multi-tracked and ornamented by track-meister Preston Klik (Big Hat), become a garden of sonic delights.
