These two spectacular, grandiose battle epics from great director Sergei Eisenstein--who pioneered the Soviet montage style of the silent era--are prototypes for many of the classic war epics that preceded them. Produced under the totalitarian Stalin regime, Eisenstein's work managed to turn Soviet propaganda into revolutionary art. ALEXANDER NEVSKY, which details the true story of the general's triumph over Teutonic Knights, features the much-imitated Battle on Ice sequence. IVAN THE TERRIBLE is the story of the powerful czar who regressed into an insane tyrant. Ironically, the second part of this film was banned when Stalin noticed too many similarities between the portrayal of Ivan and himself. Eisenstein - The Sound Years movie DVD
$32.19 In this dazzling epic from Akira Kurosawa, a petty thief named Kagemusha (Tatsuya Nakadai) gets saved from a death sentence because he resembles the warlord Shingen Takeda (also Nakadai). The warlord has been fighting two other leaders for control of 16th-century Japan and impersonators often take his place during battles to put him out of harm's way. Because of Kagemusha's strong physical similarities to the warlord, he's a perfect choice for a "shadow warrior." However, the arrangement suddenly changes when Shingen gets fatally wounded while watching a battle. Adhering to Shingen's final wish, ...

Eisenstein - The Sound Years film
$8.35 A landmark in film history, EASY RIDER blew the studio doors open for more young directors than any film before or since, helping to create the wide-open climate that would lead to the production of many outstanding films in the 1970s. As its director, Dennis Hopper is usually given the lion's share of credit for the film's success, but the revelations of time suggest that the contributions of the late Terry Southern and, to some degree, Jack Nicholson have endowed the film with much of its residual power.
Starring Peter Fonda as Wyatt (alias Captain America) and Hopper as Billy, it traces the hippie duo's adventures as they mount their seriously chopped hogs on a journey to find the real America en route to Mardi Gras. In Arizona, they visit a commune whose members are having a tough time, ...
