Closed Captioned; Standard Screen; Bio/Filmographies; Soundtrack English; Director's Comments; Dolby Digital 5.1 Re; Behind The Scenes; DTS Sound The Maysles brothers unwittingly captured the end of the 1960s as they documented the Rolling Stones' tragic 1970 free concert at Altamont, California. The backstage antics and the logistics that go into planning an event that was to be attended by 300,000 people pales as the Hells Angels fatally stab an audience member to death while Jagger helplessly performs "Sympathy for the Devil." Terrifying and electrifying filmmaking. This documentary of the Rolling Stones' 1969 US tour has become a legendary, harrowing symbol of the tragic demise of the "Peace and Love" era. After a successful tour across the United States, the Rolling Stones gave a free December concert at Altamont Speedway in California with the Grateful Dead (not seen performing), Ike and Tina Turner, Jefferson Airplane, and the Flying Burrito Brothers (all seen performing one song each). The poorly planned show was fraught with problems from its inception. The band unwisely selected the Hells Angels motorcycle club to provide security, and after the pre-existing chaos was fueled by very visible alcohol and drug abuse, the bikers resorted to violence to keep the stoned, restless, and often naked crowd in line. The result: dozens of injuries and the on-screen stabbing of a young African-American man (during "Sympathy for the Devil," no less) by one of the concert's "staff security."
In a manipulative but effective move, the Maysles brothers and Charlotte Zwerin filmed Mick Jagger in the editing room witnessing the on-camera murder for the first time. But aside from that unexpected drama, the film also works as a rock-and-roll document, capturing the band at their most relaxed, intoxicating, and electrifying. Theatrical release: December 6, 1970
Restored for a theatrical re-release in August 2000 as GIMME SHELTER: 30TH ANNIVERSARY.
George Lucas was a cameraman on the film, but his footage was not used in the final print. (Removed George Lucas as Cinematographer as per Kritsten at Maysle Films, Nov. 22, 2002)
A total of four people died at the Altamont concert.
New Yorker critic Pauline Kael wrote a scathing review of the film upon its release, accusing the filmmakers of setting the stage for the violence that transpired.
The film includes footage of the band in a southern recording studio listening to tracks that would appear on their STICKY FINGERS record. Gimme Shelter Reviews: "...Mesmerizing....The only rock-and-roll film that exerts the saturnine intensity of a thriller..." -- Rating: A-- Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly "...Framed with photographic precision in an all-out combat zone, this is a landmark documentary..." -- 4 out of 4 stars-- Mike Clark, USA Today "...A genuinely scary affair, a slow-motion depiction of a cultural car crash, which turned the dewy-eyed optimism of Woodstock on its head..."
-- Mark Kermode, Sight and Sound "...A gripping chronicle of the Stones at their height..."
-- Rolling Stone Staff, Rolling Stone 5 stars out of 5 -- "In its unwilted capacity to shock and palpable sense of a culture shifting, SHELTER gives potent testimony to tragedy."-- Kevin Harley, Total Film Gimme Shelter | List Price | $39.95 (You save $8.70) | | Studio | Criterion Collection | | Orig Year | 1970 | | DVD Encoding | Region 1 | | All Time Sales Rank | 1621 | | CD Universe Part number | 1235829 | | Catalog number | 1545 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Nov 14, 2000 | | Rating | PG (MPAA) | | Also Known As | Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter | | Running Time | 91 Minutes | | Movie Details | Color; Dolby Surround AC-3 Sound; Dolby Noise Reduction; Digitally Re-Mastered; Surround Sound; Digital Sound; Stereo Sound; DTS Stereo; Criterion Collection |
Gimme Shelter Movie Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) Kiss goodbye to the sham of the sixties. What a fantastic doco this is- with hindsight, more potent and readable now than when released. From the moment Mick gets punched in the mouth, its all downhill. Watch the Coon-skin cap pop up like Where's Wally. Here in a crowd, there on stage. Watch the tripping Hells Angel on stage standing to the right of an unaware Jagger-his face contorts with, what- bad acid? demonic possession?See the shot from the rear stage, of a dark dog run across the front of the page, like a hound from hell. It is very, very terrifying. A brilliant re-issue from CRITERION. Submitted by David Martin (Mt Martha, Australia.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 2 of 2 found this helpful.
Part history part performance I recently bought the Criterion collection DVD which has been restored both in audio and video quality. Excellent in both aspects. The DVD is part documentary, performance, and rock & roll history. The band performances are tight. It is quite a juxstaposition between Woodstock and Altamont only a few months apart. Disturbing Moment in History for a Great Band This is an more of a documentary rather than a concert film but it is one of the most tense and disturbing moments ever in music. Beatings, fighing, and murder surround their 1969 free Altamont concert which has security provided by the Hell's Angels. Its shocking watching the helpless Mick Jagger trying to calm the crowd down but knowing that its useless. This DVD is Excellent in terms of extras were have an amazing commentary and an actual radio broadcast after the Altamont concert which runs over and hour. While the picture is a bit grainy the sound is great and Criterion have done their best to give the best DVD they could.-BRYAN K. Filmed just a month after their appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show in February 1964, this film--the Beatles' first--introduces us to the unique personalities of each member of the band. The film opens with the Fab Four boarding a train mobbed with adoring young fans (mostly women) as they attempt to travel to the television studio in London. The antics of the band during rehearsals and makeup application provide a large part of the comic material ...

Gimme Shelter review
$9.69 In what just might be the finest rock & roll concert film ever, THE LAST WALTZ celebrates the final performance by the Band (Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, Levon Helm, and Garth Hudson). The show took place on Thanksgiving Day in 1976, at San Francisco's Winterland Arena--where the group had played their very first show more than 16 years before. In order to make their farewell even more unforgettable, they recruited numerous guests to join them onstage, including ...
