This 118 minute feature film is a DVD starring Dirk Bogard e, Charlotte Rampling, and Gabriele Ferzetti. From director Liliana Cavani, the scintillating story of the abusive, sexually-charged relationship, rekindled unexpectedly thirteen years after World War II, between an ex-Nazi officer (Bogarde) who served in a concentration camp, and one of the women prisoners (Rampling) he controlled. Liliana Cavani's controversial film featured a breakout performance by the
American actress Charlotte Rampling in this Italian tour de force. Thirteen years after World War II, while working as a night porter in a Vienna hotel occupied by ex-Nazis, a former SS concentration camp officer, played by Dirk Bogarde, is astonished when a past victim-lover (Rampling), checks into the hotel with her husband. Despite the horrific nature of their former "relationship"--glimpsed in flashbacks of rape, torture and humiliation--their sadomasochistic sexual bond is soon rekindled. Eventually, the SS wants to eliminate the woman, as she is a witness to war crimes. THE NIGHT PORTER is not only an operatic and disturbing cult film that deftly examines the cruelty and decadence of Nazi culture, but an unconventional love story. Based on writer-director Liliana Cavani's interviews with an actual concentration camp survivor, THE NIGHT PORTER is one of the more controversial films of the 1970s, examining aspects of human interaction few works dare to touch. $23.39 Nicolas Roeg's solo directorial debut is a haunting, unconventional narrative film that presents a bleak vision of civilized life as arid and unrewarding. Abandoned in the Australian outback, two young white children (Jenny Agutter and Roeg's son Lucien) stumble upon an adolescent Aborigine (David Gulpilil), who is performing a "walkabout." In this ritualistic six-month journey, the boy must learn to survive by himself in the imposing desert. Communication is a problem, although more for the girl than for her little brother, who still has a child's ability to communicate simply and directly. The two teenagers fail to connect for a variety of reasons, mostly due to the girl's lack of interest in a culture that is unfamiliar and different from her own. Ultimately, the differences ...

$22.15 Emerging out of an Iranian cinema renaissance, TASTE OF CHERRY is seen by many as its crowning achievement. The story of somber yet intense Mr. Badii and his journey through Tehran, the film emerges as a sort of spiritual road movie. Intent on finding an aid for his planned suicide, Badii encounters citizens from every walk of life; a trash collector, a soldier, and a seminarian, all of whom refuse to help him, either out of a sense of religion or personal morality. Seen from the car, the dusty landscape and sumptuous golden dusk light of Tehran play a central role in the film, penetrating every scene. Finally a jocular taxidermist agrees to help, all the while trying to sell Badii on the quotidian joys of nature and ...

$24.69 THE MYSTIC MASSEUR is a delightfully warm, funny drama about Ganesh (Assif Mandvi), an ethnic Indian living in Trinidad. While working as a teacher in Port of Spain, Ganesh learns of his father's death. After returning home to his country village for the funeral, he decides to stay and write books. His chronically hiccupping auntie (Zohra Segal) encourages him. Ramlogan (the great Om Puri), an old family friend, pushes the bookish Ganesh to pursue his beautiful young daughter, Leela (Ayesha Dharker of Santosh Sivan's THE TERRORIST). Ramlogan is delighted when Ganesh and Leela get married but later Leela grows frustrated with Ganesh's total immersion in his writing work. When his first book fails to sell, Ganesh returns to healing, and soon becomes a local legend, THE MYSTIC MASSEUR. $15.19 Riding high after the box office success of SHAMPOO and HEAVEN CAN WAIT, Warren Beatty used his seemingly limitless power to write, produce, direct, and star in this epic historical romance. The film recounts a particularly eventful period in the life of notorious American communist John Reed (Beatty), who journeyed to Russia to witness the Bolshevik Revolution firsthand. Before that, he met the already wed Louise Bryant (Diane Keaton) in Portland in 1915. However, they shared such a mutual attraction for words, and each other, that soon Bryant was living with Reed in New York City. It was here where they befriended some of the early 20th Century's most recognizable faces: Eugene O'Neill (Jack Nicholson), Emma Goldman (Maureen Stapleton), Max Eastman (Richard Herrmann), and Horace Whigham (George Plimpton). Yet Reed's commitment to his craft caused an endless friction in the relationship, until Louise found her own journalistic voice, leading the couple to Russia at a crucial moment in history. But just when they appeared to have come to a perfect place in their relationship, tragedy struck.
