$19.19 | | Glass: The Photographer / Riesman, Philip Glass Ensemble CD (1990)
Glass: Solo Piano / Philip Glass
$7.59 Composing the music for a theater piece revolving around the life and work of photographer Eadweard Muybridge must have seemed a natural fit for Philip Glass, as Muybridge's stop action studies of people and animals in motion have a clear visual analogy in Glass repeating musical cells. Scored for his ensemble accompanied by a chamber orchestra, The Photographer is one of the works bridging the gap between his earlier compositions up through Einstein on the Beach and his later pieces for more traditional instrumentation. The unusual feature here is the presence of violinist Paul Zukofsky in what amounts to a soloist's role, his sawing lines often reminding one incongruously of a hoe-down. While the opening vocal version of "Act I" has an almost too precious and dainty feel, the remainder of the album chugs along at a robust pace familiar to fans of Glass' music. When the final section bursts to life after a lengthy prologue, the brass sputtering, the basslines percolating, one can hardly fail to admire his ability to excite an audience on a visceral level, even as one feels slightly guilty at the ease with which one has been manipulated. ~ Brian Olewnick

| | Philip Glass Glass: Songs From Liquid Days CD (1990)
Glass: Solo Piano / Philip Glass
$7.59 Additional recording for this disc took place at The Complex, Los Angeles, California.
Songs From Liquid Days became Philip Glass' most popular and successful recording. The title holds the clue to the music's accessibility: These are songs, providing a more familiar and comfortable format for appreciating the world of minimalism than Glass' operas or instrumental pieces. Working with such lyrical collaborators as David Byrne and Suzanne Vega, he created art music which sounds radio friendly. There is also great variety displayed on this album. While the musical backing is unmistakably Philip Glass, the arrangements and vocal treatments range from the coolly subdued chamber music of "Freezing," featuring the Kronos Quartet and Linda Ronstadt, to the appropriately electrifying and almost new wave-ish "Lightning." The album's highlight, however, is the opener, a ten-minute opus called "Changing Opinion." With unusually oblique lyrics courtesy of Paul Simon, it condenses the odd excitement and drama of a minimalist opera into a single, creative burst of melody, rhythm, and momentum. The minimalist composers originally wanted to reconnect Western art music with a broad, popular audience. On that basis, Songs From Liquid Days may be their single greatest achievement. ~ Freddy Stidean

| | Arcade Fire Funeral CD (2004)
Glass: Solo Piano / Philip Glass
$11.89 This Montreal ensemble's fiery debut is marked by surging guitars, soulful strings, driving drums, brilliant bass lines, and the quavering vocals of married couple Win Butler and Regine Chassagne. The group's song structures careen through a vast territory of musical and personal history, with lyrics warm with memories of childhood neighborhoods and deceased loved ones, resulting in an alternating current of joy and sadness.
Favorably compared to the Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, and Broken Social Scene, the Arcade Fire's sound seems to come from a lifetime of listening to the Cure, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, and many others--even a dose of soul gets worked into these grand anthems. Chassagne delivers some spellbinding vocals on "Haiti," while the tinkling piano and strings on "Crown of Love" conjure up a heartbroken surfside prom. In 2004, this made many critics' year-end lists, and it's no wonder--the songs on FUNERAL are so packed with unique instrumentation, mesmerizing build-ups, and galvanizing tempo changes that they seem culled from some enigmatic, decade-spanning rock anthology.
