Pierre Boulez Edition- Varese: Ionisation, Ameriques, Etc
$8.25 Unusual for a Zappa album to open with the star turn; he usually waits until midway. "Inca Road" is a superb piece that reaffirms, should it be necessary, that Zappa was an astonishingly great lead guitarist. The quality of the guitar solo is matched throughout by some skillful keyboards from George Duke. Having said that, the solo on "Po-Jama People" is also pretty nifty. This was a high-charting album for Zappa (in the USA), and for once justice was done, as other similarly great Zappa albums failed completely. This is one of 71 necessary FZ albums to own!
Digitally remastered by Bob Stone.
Recorded between December 1974 and April 1975.

| | Steely Dan Aja CD (1977) Remastered
Pierre Boulez Edition- Varese: Ionisation, Ameriques, Etc
$7.29 This represents the pinnacle of Steely Dan's gradual transition from rock band to their own brand of jazz-influenced white soul. Guitars were replaced by keyboards, and saxophones became more common. Walter Becker and Donald Fagen were only interested in spending time in the recording studios, while the fans pined and waited. The result set new standards in recorded excellence, and is regularly used as a hi-fi shop demonstration. The ambitious title track was deemed too difficult for radio play and only the two overtly accessible tracks `Josie' and `Peg', gave them valuable exposure.
Additional personnel includes: Larry Carlton, Lee Ritenour, Dean Parks (guitar); Tom Scott (tenor saxophone, lyricon); Wayne Shorter, Pete Christlieb (tenor saxophone); Plas Johnson (horns); Victor Feldman (keyboards, vibraphone, percussion); Joe Sample, Michael Omartian (keyboards); Chuck Rainey (bass); Paul Humphrey, Bernard Purdie, Steve Gadd (drums); Tim Schmit, Clydie King, Michael McDonald (background vocals).

Pierre Boulez Edition- Varese: Ionisation, Ameriques, Etc
$6.55 Three criminally aspiring friends bungle their way through a series of misadventures in this oddball comedy from Austin auteur Wes Anderson. Brothers Luke and Owen Wilson play best friends Anthony and Dignan, two good-hearted though confused misfits who, along with their friend Bob (Robert Musgrave), attempt to find purpose in their lives by starting criminal careers. Though they make rather unimpressive criminals, the three guys shine in their unwavering sense of honor, friendship, and loyalty. BOTTLE ROCKET is an endearing, funny, and unique ...

Pierre Boulez Edition- Varese: Ionisation, Ameriques, Etc
$10.15 Director Tim Blake Nelson sets Shakespeare's OTHELLO in a modern day private high school and the result is a dark, somber teen tragedy. Mekhi Phifer (CLOCKERS) stars as Odin James, an African American star basketball player at the otherwise all-white school. The coach of the team (Martin Sheen) loves Odin like a son, which causes real son Hugo (Josh Hartnett) to squirm with jealousy and plan an elaborate revenge. Julia Stiles (a modern dress Shakespeare regular, having also co-starred in HAMLET and TEN THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU) is Desi, the virginal daughter of the dean, with whom Odin is in love. The ensuing outburst of tragic teen violence is a shocking denouement that elevates the already dangerous mood of the film to full-fledged terror.
Because of the intense violence in the film, it was shelved for years by a nervous Miramax in the wake of the real-life Columbine high school massacre. Finally, it was picked up by Lion's Gate Films. Upon viewing the film, such worry seems needless, as the film does nothing to glorify the violence it depicts. It explores themes of class, race, and all-consuming jealousy. Shakespeare's original dialogue is abandoned in favor of hip-hop-flavored modern language, but the tale's timeless relevance remains unaltered.
Hot young stars, a hop, driving soundtrack, plus a provocative tale of jealousy and betrayal combine to create ...

Pierre Boulez Edition- Varese: Ionisation, Ameriques, Etc
$18.99 ArcoVoce is a chamber ensemble composed of some of the east coast's most acclaimed performers on modern and period instruments. ArcoVoce is a resident ensemble at the Phillips Gallery here in Washington, and has performed extensively throughout the east coast at such venues as the German and Dutch Embassies, the Corcoran Gallery, the Boston Early Music Festival, and the Carmel Bach Festival. Guest artists who have performed with ArcoVoce include the celebrated baroque violinist Elizabeth Wallfisch, and Franklin Cohen, longtime principal clarinettist of the Cleveland Orchestra. ArcoVoce is unusual, and possibly unique, in performing on both period and modern instruments and in including vocal chamber music as an integral part of our performances. The liner notes to the CD explain why the group performs on both period and modern instruments, but briefly, we think that intriguing correspondences and synergies emerge when seemingly disparate pieces and instruments are juxtaposed. On the disk, for example, we have placed side-by-side the dark Bach e minor sonata for violin and continuo with the bleak Shostakovich instrumental song cycle Seven Romances to Poems of Alexander Blok. We find the eternal feminine manifest in music from the eleventh and nineteenth centuries, and so have paired the radiant Hildegard von Bingen chant with the slow movement of the Brahms c minor quartet, Brahms' lovesong to Clara Schumann. We know of no other group attempting this type of programming, much less doing it so successfully.Listen ...
