$7.59 It has been said that Leonard Bernstein was always searching for immortality and in the music of Gustav Mahler, he found it. No matter how much you acknowledge the mythification of these two great musicians, the recorded legacy that Bernstein has left behind simply corroborates the special connection he had to Mahler's music.
Mahler's symphonic forms are massive, and without proper guidance they can seem aimless. This is especially true of the 7th symphony, which has baffled musicologists and conductors alike. Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic, perhaps feeling the presence of Mahler himself--he too conducted this orchestra--imbue the symphony with passion, sarcasm, irony, triumph and chaos, letting contrasting emotional ideas flow into each other like meandering thoughts.
The symphony is shaped like an arch, with the central scherzo being the most important. Bernstein creates a chamber music atmosphere in the inner three movements, thereby allowing the last movement to be an answer to the first. To perform Mahler well is to see the end from the beginning, the way a sculptor must see the image trapped inside a block of marble. This recording is one of Bernstein's many artistic masterpieces.

Bernstein Century - Mahler: Symphony No 6 / New York Po
$7.59 The Fourth Symphony of Gustav Mahler stands apart from his others for a number of reasons. This is his "sunny" symphony; it is filled with delicate harmonies, a catchy ornamented rhythmic pattern, and it has an almost pastoral feel to it. While scored for large orchestra, it comes off as a chamber work. The last movement, with its soprano solo "Wir geniessen die himmlischen Freuden" from 'Des Knaben Wunderhorn,' talks of heaven from a child's innocent perspective.
This recording from 1960 features the preeminent Mahler interpreter of the twentieth century, Leonard Bernstein along with the New York Philharmonic, joined by the radiant soprano Reri Grist in the last movement. One could not ask for a better ensemble of players. Indeed, there are times when Bernstein seems to take off (if not fly into orbit) with the tempi, but his innate understanding of this music cannot be argued. Grist, a great singer at the height of her artistic powers, sings perfectly. A beautifully remastered and essential recording.

Bernstein Century - Mahler: Symphony No 6 / New York Po
$16.05 Mahler's Symphony No. 3 has never achieved the popularity of the composer's other works. This is a pity because the six movement symphony, scored for full orchestra, contralto soloist, boys' and women's chorus, is a wonderfully grand paean to nature and is filled with vibrant color and emotion. Completed in 1896, the work looks back to the symphonies of Beethoven and Brahms while also looking forward to the music of Schoenberg and Berg. Typical of Mahler's art are the colorful touches of orchestration that dot the work, such as the haunting posthorn solo in the third movement and contralto solo in the fourth.
On this recording Leonard Bernstein directs the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in a performance that is part of the "Bernstein Century" series on Sony. Bernstein was one of the great Mahler conductors and he brilliantly captures the work's mixture of earthy rowdiness and spiritual yearning. The remainder of the recording is devoted to Mahler's lyrical 'Rückert Lieder' and 'Kindertotenlieder.' The legendary mezzo-soprano Jennie Tourel sings with heart rending emotion in both cycles.
