Mahler: Symphony No. 4
$7.59 There is a special relationship between the music of Mahler and the New York Philharmonic. Mahler directed the orchestra in 1909, and his protégé Bruno Walter became principal conductor in 1947. Leonard Bernstein was Walter's assistant and a great proponent of Mahler's music, recording all of the symphonies in the 1960s.
The Sixth Symphony was called "the only Sixth symphony despite Beethoven's 'Pastorale'" by composer Alban Berg. Oddly, the work never was very popular with audiences and didn't receive its American premiere until 1947. The work is scored for an enormous orchestra, with exotic percussion that includes cowbells, xylophone, chimes, and celesta. Mahler also asked for "a short, powerful, heavy-sounding blow of un-metallic quality, like the stroke of an axe." This "axe blow" is a dramatic effect used in the work's finale that enhances the work's sense of doom.
Bernstein captures every ounce of drama in the work. His reading is devastating in its cumulative power. This music tells a tale of suffering, and thus makes heavy demands on the listener, but it ultimately provides sublime catharsis.

Mahler: Symphony No. 4
$16.05 Mahler's Symphony No. 3 has never achieved the popularity of the composer's other works. This is a pity because the six movement symphony, scored for full orchestra, contralto soloist, boys' and women's chorus, is a wonderfully grand paean to nature and is filled with vibrant color and emotion. Completed in 1896, the work looks back to the symphonies of Beethoven and Brahms while also looking forward to the music of Schoenberg and Berg. Typical of Mahler's art are the colorful touches of orchestration that dot the work, such as the haunting posthorn solo in the third movement and contralto solo in the fourth.
On this recording Leonard Bernstein directs the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in a performance that is part of the "Bernstein Century" series on Sony. Bernstein was one of the great Mahler conductors and he brilliantly captures the work's mixture of earthy rowdiness and spiritual yearning. The remainder of the recording is devoted to Mahler's lyrical 'Rückert Lieder' and 'Kindertotenlieder.' The legendary mezzo-soprano Jennie Tourel sings with heart rending emotion in both cycles.

$10.89 Music composed by Victor Herbert. Lyrics written by Glen MacDonough and Henry Blossom.
Recorded in April 1944 & November 1945. Originally released on Decca 10" LPs (7004), Decca (8016) & Decca (8458). Includes liner notes by Eric Myers.
Using its Universal logo, Broadway Decca continues its program of reissuing shows from the early days of the Broadway musical. For this release, it has selected to include on a single CD two of the major productions that were important landmarks in the transition from the traditions and style of the Viennese operetta of Franz Lehár and Johann Strauss to the great musical productions of the 1930s and thereafter. Victor Herbert had a successful career as a writer of the operetta that was anchored in European convention but slowing moving toward something especially American. This CD compiles two of Herbert's more triumphant efforts, the childlike fantasy Babes in Toyland and his most successful undertaking, The Red Mill. Opening in 1906, the show ran for 174 performances, more than any other show of the season. It was revived in 1946, with Eddie Foy in the lead, and ran for twice as long as the original. Both productions were loaded with Tin Pan Alley tunes such as "The Streets of New York" and "Every Day Is Ladies' Day With Me." Babes in Toyland was a forecast of what was to come in the classic movie, including the munchkin-type singing on "Never Mind Bo-Beep, We Will Find Your Sheep." Although these shows were on Broadway earlier in the century, "original cast" recordings were not made until 1944 and 1945, respectively. It is from these sources that these reissues were remastered (Doug Pomeroy did an excellent job) and reissued. The performances here are stellar, with key roles played by top performers of the day such as Wilbur Evans, Eileen Farrell, and Kenny Baker. This release is a welcome and entertaining addition to the collection of great events in the history of the American musical stage. ~ Dave Nathan
