$5.19 | | Hayley Westenra Winter Magic CD (2009)
Vivaldi - A Violin Festival
$12.64 A magical collection of Christmas songs from the 22 year old singing phenomenon that is Hayley Westenra. Winter Magic combines some of the best loved and most familiar seasonal carols such as 'Silent Night' and 'Coventry Carol' with popular Christmas songs 'Little Drummer Boy' and 'Sleigh Ride', as well as tracks Hayley has written herself ( Peace Shall Come, All With You and Christmas Morning). The variety of the song choices perfectly showcases the versatility of Hayley's angelic voice and her ability to not only perform in a beautiful, classical way (Corpus Christi Carol) but also in a considerably more 'pop' style (Peace Shall Come). Hayley released her first album 'Pure' at the age of 16 and it was soon on the way to becoming the fastest-selling debut album from a classical artist, and reached the Top 10 of the pop charts in 11 countries. Her albums have sold more than four million copies worldwide to date. 'Pure' was certified by the official UK chart compilers as the best selling classical album of the 21st Century. True to form, Hayley has once again produced an irresistible record which is guaranteed to make everyone's Christmas that little bit more magical.
| | Jean-Luc Ponty Imaginary Voyage CD (1976)
Vivaldi - A Violin Festival
$5.95 As of 1976, Jean-Luc Ponty's variations on the Mahavishnu Orchestra theme were still fresh and imaginative, cast in a distinctively different, more lyrical, more controlled framework. For Imaginary Voyage, Ponty's instrumental lineup is identical to that of Mahavishnu -- electric violin, guitar, keyboards, bass, drums -- but he turns the emphasis on its head, with all commands coming directly from the violin (his) and less competitive crossplay emanating from his colleagues. For starters, "New Country" is a lively jazz-rock hoedown, one of those periodic C&W side trips that some fusioneers attempted for a lark, and "The Gardens of Babylon" is a wonderfully memorable tune, the beginnings of which grow out of "New Country." The last half of the CD is taken up by the title composition, a strong four-part suite that hangs together with barely a sag in interest over its 20-minute span. ~ Richard S. Ginell
Live Recording
Recorded at Kendun Studios, Burbank, California in July and August, 1976.
Personnel: Jean-Luc Ponty (electric & acoustic violins, organ, synthesizers); Daryl Stuermer (electric & acoustic guitars); Allan Zavod (keyboards, piano); Tom Fowler (electric bass); Mark Craney (percussion).
| | Charlotte Church Voice Of An Angel CD (1999)
Vivaldi - A Violin Festival
$9.05 The people of Wales love their singing and their singers, so much so that when one of their own--be it Tom Jones, Gwyneth Jones or Bryn Terfel--makes good they are treated as national heroes. The Welsh also like to sing together, forming choruses of every description, such as the ten thousand voice World Choir, and they particularly like singing contests so that they can sing together and find more singers to celebrate.
Charlotte Church started winning contests at the age of eight and came to national attention by appearing on a television talent show. After making the talk show rounds she was brought to the attention of Sony and this CD, recorded when she was twelve, followed. Her voice has some womanly qualities, but this is still very much a child's voice without the manner of a trained singer. Her natural approach brings a different dimension to much of this material and is heard to best advantage in a selection of harp-accompanied Welsh traditional songs.
Recorded at Brangwyn Hall, Swansea, Wales from July 12-13, 1998 and at BBC Recording Studio, Cariff, Wales from August 17-22, 1998. Includes liner notes by James Marsh.
Personnel: Charlotte Church (vocals); Meinir Huelyn (harp); Welsh National Opera Orchestra And Chorus.
Engineers: Charles Harbutt, Mike Ross-Trevor.
| | An An Evening With Il Divo: Live In Barcelona CDs (2009) With DVD
Vivaldi - A Violin Festival
$15.17 A live performance available as either a BluRay or a DVD/CD set, Live in Barcelona captures Il Divo's April 3, 2009, performance at Palau Sant Jordi. The video portions contain the complete 24-track performance; the CD is a truncated ten-cut sampler, designed as a bonus rather than the main attraction. That main attraction is the extravaganza captured on video, where the operatic quartet runs through all manners of pop standards -- "Bridge Over Troubled Water," "Unbreak My Heart," "Nights in White Satin," "The Winner Takes It All," "My Way," "The Impossible Dream" -- sometimes translating the lyrics out of English so they feel more like opera. Naturally, this live set won't convince doubters, but those who have loved any of the group's five studio albums will find this a satisfying spectacle.
