The early Zappa albums were treasured by the few and totally misunderstood by the majority. The brilliant SGT. PEPPER satire of the cover should have garnered extra sales, but no. Zappa's scathing wit homed in on modern middle-class America and West Coast hippies. The album offered 19 vignettes incorporating avant garde, doo-wop, some relatively conventional pop music and a lot of hilarious dialogue that was so hip it has never dated. Zappa made us confront the obvious, and the results were alarming. These issues are best demonstrated on "What's The Ugliest Part Of Your Body," "Bow Tie Daddy," and "The Idiot Bastard ...

Elliott Carter: A Symphony Of Three Orchestras; Varèse: Deserts; Ecuatorial; Hyperprism
$12.95 FLIRTING WITH TWILIGHT was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album. "Easy Living" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s).
Native Chicagoan Kurt Elling is quickly becoming the preeminent male vocalist of his generation. This may be in part due to the lack of under-40 male jazz singers altogether. Nonetheless, deeply influenced by Jon Hendricks, and Mark Murphy, Elling is a chance-taking improviser, who brings a fresh approach to modern jazz. On this 2001 release, he is teamed up with tenor saxophonist Bob Sheppard, among others and an all-star rhythm section featuring Marc Johnson on bass and Peter Erskine on drums. Largely mellow and ballad-driven, FLIRTING WITH TWILIGHT shows the depth of Elling's musical conception.
Highlights include a fresh reworking of the Glenn Miller classic, "Moonlight Serenade" and a smart version of the subtle "Lil' Darlin'." On the former, Elling bases his vocal stylings on Charlie Haden's bass solos from Quartet ...

Elliott Carter: A Symphony Of Three Orchestras; Varèse: Deserts; Ecuatorial; Hyperprism
$26.89 The 13th Floor Elevators might have been remembered simply as one-hit wonder of the '60s--the Texas equivalent of the Count 5, for example--had it not been for two things. First, they were the only rock band in history to feature a guy playing a continuous obligato on electric jug, which added a deeply weird element to even their most straightforward three-chord rockers. Second, and perhaps more importantly, they were fronted by a genuine howling weirdo and cult figure-to-be, the incomparable Roky Erickson.
Roky, who took more acid trips than Jerry Garcia had hot meals, was nonetheless a gifted songwriter who sang every word (however bizarre) as if his life depended on it. This debut album--reputedly the first rock album ...
