The soundtrack to The Cider House Rules, the film adaptation of John Irving's novel, features a score by Academy Award-winning composer Rachel Portman, who has written music for a wide array of films, including Emma, Benny & Joon, and The Joy Luck Club. Her orchestral score for this film reflects its poignancy, humor, and unflinching look at the moral impact of abortion. ~ Heather Phares Lasse Hallstrom's leisurely adaptation of John Irving's unconventional coming-of-age novel is so well crafted and well-acted that it's almost churlish to point out that it's easier to admire than actually like. Rachel Portman's orchestral score, however, requires no such qualification. It's a beautiful piece of rustic Americana, mostly arranged for strings and piano, and all very much of a piece--the various cues flow together seamlessly, as if they were all part of a larger suite. Fans of the film, however, may be disappointed to find that the various period recordings that comment on the action from time to time--songs by Tommy Dorsey, Louis Armstrong, et al.--are not included here.
