One of Jerry Goldsmith's best scores of the 1960s, and one that has bounced between several labels on LP and CD, The Blue Max finally comes into its own on Sony's expanded compact disc reissue, which boasts not only superior sound but all of the little bits of background source music used in various scenes in the movie. The film is a war epic dealing with the lives and ambitions of German aviators during the First World War. Goldsmith works from military and flight motives, and provides enough rich and unexpected twists in his approach to delight even those listeners who aren't overly devoted to the film. The flight-inspired material, most notably "First Blood," comprise the best parts of the score, which, alas, isn't quite strong enough to stand on its own. The sound on the LPs and old CDs suffered the typical weaknesses of mid-'60s recording, but the new digital transfer makes up for most of these problems. ~ Bruce Eder Blue Max Soundtrack Music | List Price | $7.99 (You save $0.40) | | Category | Rock/Pop Albums, Rock CDs, Soundtrack | | Label | Legacy | | Orig Year | 1966 | | All Time Sales Rank | 52321 | | CD Universe Part number | 1240790 | | Catalog number | 57890 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Mar 14, 1995 | | Studio/Live | Studio | | Mono/Stereo | Stereo | | Additional Info | Original Soundtrack |

| Blue Max Soundtrack Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) The Goldsmith Legacy Begins With the release of the film "The Blue Max", Jerry Goldsmith had established himself as an eminent film composer at the top of his form with such deverse subjects as "Freud", "Lonely Are the Brave", "Lillies of the Field", "In Harm's Way" and "A Patch of Blue." In the year 1966 alone, he made movie magic with such memorable contributions to "The Sand Pebbles", "The Trouble With Angels", "Our Man Flint", "Stagecoach", "Seconds" and this exciting World War I epic. His versatility has always been amazing. The latest CD issue contains all the previously released tracks by Goldsmith plus all the various cues heard in the film as background music. The original Mainstream album was one of the first soundtracks that I owned and I played it almost daily. Even now, with this magnificent CD release in my collection, I still go back to the original album and experience again the thrill of listening to it for the first time. | | American Black Lung ...And They Rode Their Weapons Into War CD (2006)
Blue Max Soundtrack songs
$10.59 When rock first started rolling, preachers of many persuasions condemned it as the Devil's music. Their views haven't shifted much in the ensuing decades, but many in the evangelical community's have. Deciding that maybe Satan had the right idea, they've chosen to turn his weapon against him; all hail the coming of Christian rock. The American Black Lung are the latest to enter the fray with their album ...And They Rode Their Weapons into War. But which war they're referring to is a little difficult to distinguish. Presumably the werewolves, walking corpses, vultures, snakes, and serpents that slink around their obscure lyrics are allegorical, although what precisely they represent isn't always clear. What is apparent, though, is that the band is disgusted by much of American life, its consumer society, and its violent tendencies. What's cloudier are the political undertones, which ebb toward the antiwar, but are so obscured in dramatic metaphor that whatever message the Lung are trying to deliver is lost in translation. So where's God in all this? Missing in action, so to speak, for there's no love here, nor mercy either, adding to the fatality of the set and its apocalyptic nature. That doomsday feeling is reinforced by the aggressive music and the shouted, sometimes screamed vocals. An incendiary mix of hardcore and hard rock, with a dollop of garage rock and a sliver of metal thrown in for good measure, the Lung storm across this set. Melodies are sometimes secondary ...
