The legendary Johnny Cash experienced something of a renaissance in the 1990s, fanned by a trilogy of theme collections of his past work: LOVE, GOD, and MURDER. In MURDER he explores the dark side of humanity, singing of those who, because of love, greed, anger or circumstance, commit that most irrevocable deed. Cash doesn't romanticize crime and criminals; he simply sings about their lives and stories. Nor does he moralize. Cash becomes the conduit for pieces of sad and unfortunate history.
"Mister Garfield" recounts a Presidential assassination, while Bruce Springsteen's "Highway Patrolman" is a disquieting tale of two brothers on opposite sides of the law. "Joe Bean" is a tale of a murderer being executed for a killing he didn't do (with a darkly humorous ending that Rod Serling and the Crypt-Keeper from TALES FROM THE CRYPT would likely smile upon). Cash's baritone is deep and dark as the dirt from six feet down, reflecting his characters' pride, shame and anguish.

Jimmie Dolan's sole hit was one of four versions of "Hot Rod Race" that made the country Top 10 in 1951. In an attempt to duplicate the success of his hit, Dolan recorded talking blues songs and novelties for Capitol through the mid-'50s, sometimes approximating Ernest Tubb's vocal style or following in the footsteps of Tex Williams ("Nicotine Fits"). Rhonda Vincent's 17 albums have seen her journey from bluegrass to country and back to bluegrass again over the course of a career that began when she was just five. Back Home Again solidifies here position in the bluegrass community, which is where she truly belongs -- her voice and musical skill never really fit well into the world of commercial country music. Vincent's greatest talent is as a vocalist, and her twangy sound is right at home on this album. On Back Home Again, she also plays mandolin on most tracks. She chooses her songs well, coming up with a collection of faith-tinged tunes about love and struggle, but at times her rendition of them seems a little fast and frantic. Bluegrass has a history of lightning-fast solos and chaotic jumbles of strings, but there are places on this album where a little more clarity could be achieved by simplification or a slight slow-down. A brief history....Railroads and clearcuts formed in the spring of 2002 as a four-piece. The Original line-up included Colin Herb (guitar), Kris Hedges (guitar), Brandi Whetstone (drums) and Josh Schafer (bass). With the demise of their previous band (Ex-Facto), Josh, Colin, and Brandi joined with Kris to form this new entity now known as railroads and clearcuts. After playing a few shows and writing together, Josh and Colin switched instruments. The band came up with new material and went into the studio in February of 2003 and thanks to Eric French and Oath Studios, railroads and clearcuts recorded their first self-titled LP.After recording, railroads and clearcuts continued to play shows, traveled, and wrote new material.
