The first album by Portland, Oregon's tongue in cheek lounge pop orchestra Pink Martini, SYMPATHIQUE, was originally released in 1997 on the band's own Heinz label. Although the album contains two originals by singer China Forbes and pianist Thomas Lauderdale, the title track and "Lullaby," the bulk of the album's 12 songs consists of new arrangements of loungy favorites like "Never On Sunday," "Que Sera Sera," "Brazil," and "Song of the Black Lizard," taken from the soundtrack of a Japanese cult film. Unlike contemporaries such as Combustible Edison, Pink Martini had the musical chops and heartfelt love of the style to keep the album from descending into snarky kitsch. In 2009, Heinz Records released the first ever vinyl edition of the album.

Lidia on Pink Martini Well, at first I thought it was an instrumental CD, then I realized it was not, but loved it all through.
Especially: NO HAY PROBLEMA Submitted by LPadro2001 (East Haven, CT) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 2 found this helpful.
A band ready for a major breakthrough These guys had rehearsal space across the street from my office and shared an AMTRAK ride with me back from the Bumbershoot fest a few years ago of which one reviewer commented. Fabulous interpretations with a Latin/classical feel, the opening cut is a killer.Somehow though it all left one wanting more and I think, the band is ready to kick it up a notch and breakthrough on a national scale. I think much more lurks within Lauderdale & Co then we've presently heard. Submitted by Lee (Portland Oregon) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 2 found this helpful.
Surprisingly Latin! Having bought this CD for the French songs which I thought it had ,I was pleasantly surprised by the high quality of the Latin Jazz numbers it held, sung in Spanish - really good. The French song ( the ONLY one on the CD in spite of the CD title implying that there would be a predominance of French material on it!) is brilliant. Average type band I have to admit I have never heard of these guys and just happenned to hear them at the experience music project in Seattle. They have some good songs on this cd but there were some cuts I thought shouldn't be on there. Submitted by a reviewer (Bellingham, WA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Shirley Horn I Remember Miles CD (1998)
Sympathique CD music
$12.39 I REMEMBER MILES won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance.
This stunning album is Shirley Horn's loving tribute to her friend and colleague, the legendary late Miles Davis. Davis was so taken by Horn's first album EMBERS AND ASHES that he forced The Village Vanguard to let her virtually-unknown trio open for him during his 1961 run there. Their friendship and admiration for each other's music lasted through the years, and Shirley Horn's 1991 recording YOU WON'T FORGET ME, was one of the last recordings Miles Davis made.
Horn selected mostly ballads from Davis' Columbia Records catalogue for her tribute because, as she explains in the liner notes, Davis liked ...
| | Tesla Into The Now CD (2004)
Sympathique music CDs
$8.49 Unfairly labeled a hair-metal band, Tesla was always closer to the spirit of vintage 1970s hard rock. When the group released 1994's BUST A NUT, grunge rock was in full swing, and the Sacramento quintet subsequently took their curtain call, keeping busy with low-profile side projects. Testing the waters in 2000, Tesla launched a successful reunion tour, proving the band's enduring appeal. INTO THE NOW stands as their first full-length studio effort in 10 years.
The core of Tesla's sound has been updated with a fresh ...
| | Pink Martini Hang On Little Tomato CD (2004)
Sympathique songs
$15.05 Pink Martini brings new definition to the word "eclectic." Bridging ethnic divides, this ensemble creates music that draws from jazz, Afro-Cuban, Asian, classical, and both Western and Eastern European folk traditions.
In addition to a myriad of world-music influences, HANG ON LITTLE TOMATO, Pink Martini's sophomore effort, features a total of six different languages. For example, "Kikuchiyo to Mohshimasu" explores the music of Japan; to help add authenticity to this track, Pink Martini invited a Japanese slide guitarist to sit in with the band. The record's opener, "Let's Never Stop Falling in Love," is a salsa ballad that highlights China Forbes's sultry voice; here ...
| | Pink Martini Hey Eugene! CD (2007) Digipak
Sympathique album
$14.29 A large-ish ensemble led by pianist Thomas Lauderdale and singer China Forbes, Pink Martini is maddeningly, wonderfully eclectic in a way that few other groups could hope to be. Drawing from Parisian pop, jazz, the European cabaret tradition, Latin rhythms, and pre-1960 Hollywood film soundtracks, all combined with urbanity and elan, this Martini will leave the listener both shaken and stirred. A fab bonus: Jimmy Scott, the legendary and unique jazz vocalist, appears on "Tea For Two."
Audio Mixer: Dave Friedlander.

| | Norah Jones Fall CD (2009)
Sympathique CD music
$15.05 With The Fall, Norah Jones completes the transition away from her smooth cabaret beginnings and toward a mellowly arty, modern singer/songwriter. Jones began this shift on 2007's Not Too Late, an album that gently rejected her tendencies for lulling, tasteful crooning, but The Fall is a stronger, more cohesive work, maintaining an elegantly dreamy state that's faithful to the crooner of Come Away with Me while feeling decidedly less classicist. Some of this could be attributed to Jones' choice of producer, Jacquire King, best-known for his work with Modest Mouse and Kings of Leon, but King hardly pushes Norah in a rock direction; ...
| | Benoit/Freeman Project CD (1994)
Sympathique music CDs
$12.49 The Benoit/Freeman project is a reunion of sorts, as both smooth jazz icons worked on 1986's landmark Rippingtons debut Moonlighting and together wrote Benoit's hit "Every Step of the Way." Since then, Freeman's career with that band and Benoit's as a solo artist spearheaded the smooth jazz movement while expanding the rules on just what modern jazz is. The new project combines the radio-friendly pleasures inherent in their separate endeavors with an exciting expansion and interplay of fresh and innovative ideas. Though the focus is clearly on the interplay between guitar and piano, the two are surrounded by all-star backing talent like Nathan East, Abe Laboriel, John Robinson, and former Rippingtons members Steve Reid and Tony Morales. Much attention was directed to Kenny Loggins' wonderful vocal performance of "When She Believed in Me," but the Phil Perry sung version of "After the Love Is Gone" is superfluous; it's beautiful ...
