The Sugarcubes: Bjork (vocals, keyboards); Einar Orn (vocals, trumpet); Thor (guitar); Bragi (bass); Siggi (drums). Engineers include: Kjarntan Kjartansson, Gerard Johnson, Gail Lambourne. Recorded at Studio Syrland, Reykjavik, Iceland; Berry St. Studios and Orinocco Studios, London, England. With strong songs built around Bjork Gudmundsdottir's piercing, striking voice, this record lived up to all the advance hype. With songs like "Birthday" and "Motorcrash," this is the perfect introduction to the 'Cubes. ~ John Dougan LIFE'S TOO GOOD introduced the world to the highly unusual charms of Iceland's Sugarcubes, setting off the meteoric rise of singer Bjork, whose otherworldly vocal gift soon become a staple of pop music's wilder side. The album's clear production and economical accompaniment set the stage perfectly for the vocal interplay of Bjork and co-vocalist Einer Orn, whose insane rants provide a humorous, unsettling foil for her primal wail. Lyrically, the album reads like imperfect translation of intellectual, if absurdist poetry--slightly awkward wording and phrasing of truly bizarre adventures of the mind and spirit. The sultry groan of "Birthday" weaves the tale of a young girl whose thoughts are portrayed beautifully through Bjork's highly emotive vocal and child-like stream-of-consciousness imagery. On "Deus," the subject matter is far more philosophical, offset by Einar's disturbing psychosexual monologues (which find him in a bathtub with the very god whose existence the song questions). Raw sensuality is the theme of "Coldsweat," another of the hits this album produced, and further proof of Bjork's tremendous potential.Alternative Press (7/01, p.96) - Included in AP's "10 Essential Women's Rock Albums" - "...Bjork's international debut...a jazzy, weird cocktail that still goes down smooth..." Personnel includes: John McGeoch (guitar). Recorded at Bearsville Studios, Bearsville, New York. While not as adventurous or stunning as their debut (Life's Too Good), the Sugarcubes' swan song release (Stick Around for Joy) contains enough quality material to see them out in style. Amid producer Paul Fox (10,000 Maniacs, They Might Be Giants, Semisonic)'s compact backdrops, Björk and Einar Orn lead the band through a fast-paced and funk-inflected mix of arthouse pop. With Siggi Baldursson's syncopated drums and Thor Eldon's glossy indie guitar in the forefront, Björk expectedly pounces on each song with her acrobatic pipes; thankfully, Orn keeps his usually spastic vocal interjections to a minimum, often opting for some fine trumpet accents instead. Moving from the multi-vocal nuances of the opener, "Gold," to the ...

$13.89 (MP3 Available for Download) IT'S-IT contains remixed versions of previously released material. Producers include: Mark Stagg, Dick Birkett, The Sugarcubes, Ray Schulman, Justin Robertson. Engineers: Paul Fox, Mike Koglin, Andy Todd. Since the Sugarcubes came and went in such an audacious flash of bizarre originality (and especially since Björk slowly became one of the biggest international crossover success stories of the '90s), one isn't shocked to find the number of reissues and clumsy collections quickly outnumbering the band's actual output. Yes, the Sugarcubes are becoming much like an Icelandic Sex Pistols these days. Which explains It's-It: a mood-testing, dull nightmare ...

$15.65 Composer: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Personnel: Tyler Bates (guitar, synthesizer, loops); Lisa Papineau (vocals); Greg Ellis (hammer dulcimer, percussion); Wolfgang Matthes (synthesizer); Chris Chaney (electric bass); Gary Novak (drums, taiko, percussion); Dieter Hartmann (percussion programming). Audio Mixer: Gustavo Borner. WATCHMEN is billed as the blockbuster event film of 2009. Directed by Zack Snyder (300, DAWN OF THE DEAD), and based on the most coveted comic book graphic novel in history, the film begins as a pulp noir superhero murder mystery and escalates into a science-fiction-inspired near-apocalypse--all set in an alternate-reality 1985, where Richard Nixon is President. Scoring the film is Snyder's go-to guy, Tyler Bates, who composed the music for both of the director's previous efforts, as well as THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, ROB ZOMBIE'S HALLOWEEN, and THE DEVIL'S REJECTS. Bates is well known for his melding of multiple musical genres ...
