The second Sugarcubes record, HERE TODAY, TOMORROW NEXT WEEK! was released in 1989. The band also released a version of this album, under the title ILLUR ARFUR! (which translates roughly as "Evil Inheritance"), recorded entirely in their native Icelandic.
For many people, the disconcerting differences between the swooping vocals of lead singer Bjork and the spoken word agit-propisms of trumpeter Einer Orn are too great for them to really enjoy the Sugarcubes' albums, which is a shame since the styles are actually very well-matched (and often very funny). This bizarre interplay is most pronounced on "Pump," a strange song that's both an ode to oral sex, and one of the most vitriolic, anti-relationship songs ever, depending on who's singing. Other notable tracks are the calypso-tinged "Tidal Wave," the barbed and jagged rhythms of "Nail," and the hyperactive "A Day Called Zero."Record Collector (magazine) (p.106) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[P]acked full of humour, satire and the warbling of Einar Benediktsson....A circus act of avant-garde improv ideas." Here Today, Tomorrow, Next Week
$7.99 Although Mike Patton found fame and fortune as the singer for Faith No More (with their 1989 breakthrough release THE REAL THING), he was first a member of Mr. Bungle. Instead of quitting his former band when he accepted FNM's vocal offer, Patton decided to keep both projects going simultaneously. In the wake of FNM's big success in the early 1990s, Mr. Bungle was signed to Warner Bros., who issued the band's self-titled debut in 1991.
Mr. Bungle was far more abstract and all-over-the-place than Faith No More, with little regard for conventionality, song structure, or any sort of borders ...
| | Sugarcubes Life's Too Good CD (1988)
Here Today, Tomorrow, Next Week
$9.79 LIFE'S TOO GOOD introduced the world to the highly unusual charms of Iceland's Sugarcubes, setting off the meteoric rise of singer Bjork, whose otherworldly vocal gift soon become a staple of pop music's wilder side. The album's clear production and economical accompaniment set the stage perfectly for the vocal interplay of Bjork and co-vocalist Einer Orn, whose insane rants provide a humorous, unsettling foil for her primal wail. Lyrically, the album reads like imperfect translation of intellectual, if absurdist poetry--slightly awkward wording and phrasing of truly bizarre adventures of the mind and spirit.
The sultry groan of "Birthday" weaves the tale ...
| | Sugarcubes Stick Around For Joy CD (1992)
Here Today, Tomorrow, Next Week
$13.29 The third, and last, Sugarcubes album, barring a brace of posthumous releases, STICK AROUND FOR JOY was released at the height of the first wave of "alternative rock," and is something of a departure for the band. The album offers more muscular, straight-ahead rock than the Sugarcubes' previous releases, leaving most of their previous eccentricity to be delivered by Bjork's astonishing vocal range and the occasional spoken word intonations of Einer Orn (which, though still present, are less intrusive on this record than earlier ones). Though more rock isn't a bad thing, it does slightly dampen the band's originality. ...
| | Sugarcubes It's-It CD (1992)
Here Today, Tomorrow, Next Week
$13.29 IT'S-IT contains remixed versions of previously released material.
Since emerging as a solo artist, Bjork has gone on to considerable acclaim, both on and off the dance floor, with her remixes. However, at the time, the notion of Sugarcubes dance remixes was slightly jarring, as much of the band's particular genius derived from their angular rhythmic structures, which here are streamlined ...

Here Today, Tomorrow, Next Week
$26.29 Recorded in 1990, while Bjork Gudmundsdottir was still a member of the Icelandic alt-rock band the Sugarcubes, GLING-GLO provided the eccentric vocalist with one of her first moments in the solo spotlight. Solidly backed by Trio Gudmundar Ingolfssonar, Bjork settles into a spare, upbeat set of bop-influenced jazz tunes, allowing her exuberant, dynamic voice to carry each melody. While the buoyant title track could easily serve as the theme song for a sophisticated children's ...
