The Stooges hurled themselves headfirst into 1969 with a debut so sonically ferocious that only one-time Velvet Underground member John Cale could do it justice as a producer. With a full-scale feedback punch, The Stooges' musical bite tore its way towards punk and what would later be called grunge.
Fully embracing the idioms of teenage life, THE STOOGES coined previously unmentioned terms of adolescent angst. "No Fun," "Not Right," and "I Wanna Be Your Dog" gave vocabulary to the post-hippie generation yearning to voice its dissatisfaction. The opening track, "1969," built off the teen-angst of "Summertime Blues" but offered the simplest breakdown of powerlessness to date. "Another year for me and you," says Iggy Stooge, "another year with nothing to do." The Stooges' triumph was in converting the confusion and desires of teenage life into chaotic, three-chord bliss. Often mimicked, but never equalled, THE STOOGES was the call for a new era of rock.

Stooges Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Killer psychedelic punk-rock This album is a excellent fusion of punk and psychedelia. The first song, '1969', sets the tone for pretty much the entire album, fuzz-drenched wah-wah guitar licks with Iggy's raw, snarling vocals, this is truly a punk masterpiece. The songs are simple, but effective, with lyrics that most of the teen angst world can relate to. The only weak song on the lp is 'We Will Fall, which is way too long and boring, but still this album is highly recommended. Submitted by mbordy69 (omaha, ne, usa) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

A fan from the 70s I found this album and Fun House in 1971 in a cut out bin at a department store, they cost like 99 cents for each album. WHAT A DEAL! If I had paid the regular price (at that time about $3.98) it would have still beena great deal...often imitated but never ever duplicated, Ig is STILL the Man. I used play my drums to these albums and
31 years later the Ig is still rockin out and I am still bangin my head. Submitted by a reviewer (chicago il) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Purchase Stooges CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Iggy Pop Idiot CD (1977)
Stooges album
$8.85 Iggy's solo debut following the end of the Stooges, THE IDIOT is often overlooked in favour of his second epistle, LUST FOR LIFE. Great album though the latter may be, THE IDIOT served to remind rock's better-informed fans that one of its most original talents was still alive and kicking. Produced by Bowie, IDIOT contains two compositions, "Funtime" and "China Girl" that he later recorded himself. Another highlight is the electronics-driven "Nightclubbing" (a certifiable post-punk classic) and the meandering "Dum Dum Boys" (a precursor to "The Passenger"). An album that proved Iggy did not need to be ...
| | Iggy Pop Lust For Life CD (1977)
Stooges CD music
$8.39 Iggy and Bowie at the height of their respective powers presented a formidable artistic engine, and Lust For Life sees them working up a full head of steam. Two songs will need little introduction - 'Lust For Life' and 'The Passenger' are as intrinsic to the tapestry of 70s rock music as sundry Beatles efforts were to the previous decade (their influence on 90s film soundtracks is a testament to their durability). Those monolithic jukebox favourites aside, listeners may also find space in their hearts for the swaggering 'Neighbourhood Threat' (shades of the Stooges, without the musical clatter) and the disquieting 'Turn Blue', written from the viewpoint ...
| | New York Dolls CD (1973)
Stooges music CDs
$6.49 Along with the Stooges, the New York Dolls were largely responsible for pioneering the sound and attitude of punk, and this, their self-titled debut, is one of the founding documents of post-'60s rock. Outrageous, shambolic, and bursting with energy, the Dolls borrowed from the amped-up, bluesy swagger of the Rolling Stones, the pop confections of Phil Spector, and the campy theatricality that would flower with the glam movement, yet brought it all together with a visceral impact that recalled the jolt of early rock & roll.

| | Iggy And The Stooges Raw Power CD (1973) Remastered
Stooges songs
$6.79 This 1997 reissue of RAW POWER was digitally remixed by Iggy Pop, Danny Kadar, and Bruce Dickinson. Pop had long complained about David Bowie's mix of the original LP.
The booklet contains an interview with Iggy Pop conducted and edited by Arthur Levy.
Iggy & the Stooges/The Stooges: Iggy Pop; Ron Asheton (bass instrument); James Williamson, Scott Asheton.
Though the Stooges were on the verge of breaking up at the time RAW POWER was recorded, it still comes across as (arguably) their most focused and powerful release. Former guitarist Ron Ashton was moved to bass and replaced by James Williamson, whose precise, razory playing makes RAW POWER the Stooges' most guitar-driven album. Scott Ashton drums up a storm, and Iggy yowls, yelps, drawls, and croons with a sense of menace that is both exhilarating and frightening. Though the album retains the reckless urgency and noise-happy chaos that defined FUN HOUSE, it strips away the swampy murk of that album with its trebly, metallic production.
The songs work sexy, primal grooves ("I Need Somebody"), hopped-up boogie ("Shake Appeal"), reworked, adrenaline-pumped early rock & roll (the title track), and creeping, whisper-fueled come-ons ("Penetration"). The album's two best tracks, the spastic, take-no-prisoners danger anthem "Search and Destroy, " and the minor key, Doors-influenced "Gimme Danger" bristle with energy and the kind of sleazy, libidinous glamour that keep the true heart of rock thudding furiously. Aptly named, RAW POWER was the Stooges' third and final album, putting the cap on their small but hugely influential discography. A rock essential.

| | MC5 Kick Out The Jams CD (1969)
Stooges album
$8.85 Recorded live at Russ Gibb's Grande Ballroom, Detroit, Michigan on Oct. 30 & 31, 1968.
While the Rolling Stones were perhaps the first rock band to merge rock & roll with tales of violent revolution (i.e. their classic "Street Fighting Man"), no one did it as convincingly and as whole-heartedly as Detroit's MC5. Managed by the notorious White Panther Party member John Sinclair, the MC5 rocked with a vengeance that was unparalleled at the time--the band was rewarded years later by being heralded as punk rock originators. Few have been able to top the ferocious intensity of their classic debut, 1969's in-concert KICK OUT THE JAMS.
Although the album fared well on the charts, it was surrounded in controversy from the get-go; the record company wanted the group to edit out a vulgarity included in the introduction to the title track. The friction would lead to the band parting ways from Elektra soon after, but all the hoopla could not take away from the stellar quality of KICK OUT THE JAMS. Be prepared to be blown away by such songs as "Rocket Reducer No. 62," "Borderline," "Starship," and the title track, to name but a few. KICK OUT THE JAMS is the undisputed Holy Grail for fans of blaring, high-energy rock.
Includes liner notes by Rob Tyner.

| | Stooges Fun House CD (1970)
Stooges CD music
$9.95 FUN HOUSE sounds like an extended, guttural war cry from deep within the psyche. While the Stooges' excellent debut, produced by John Cale, had a clean, punchy sound that introduced the band's ragged, stripped-down rock, it did not capture the chaotic fury of the band's live spirit. The Stooges hired Don Gallucci (formerly of the Kingsmen) to produce FUN HOUSE, and he gave the album a murky, swampy ambience that lacks clarity and precision, yet compensates for that lack tenfold with immediacy and a staggering sonic punch in the gut. And where THE STOOGES can sound like bratty teenaged music, this album sounds grown up, menacing, mercurial, dark, and relentlessly primal.
The muddied production may add to the primitivism, but it is the band that truly conjures the magic. The Stooges plays like unleashed banshees here: Ron Ashton's razory guitar riffs and swirling squall create clouds of noise while the brutal rhythms of bassist Dave Alexander and drummer Scott Ashton crash all over the place. Iggy Pop screams and howls like a man possessed, giving voice to a spirit that would find its final expression in the punk movement seven years later. From the panther-like strut of "Down on the Street" to the adrenaline-driven "TV Eye" through the caustic dirge of "Dirt" to the avant squall of "L.A. Blues" (complete with wailing air-raid saxophone from Steve MacKay), this set is one of the founding documents of alternative rock. And, like Pandora's box, once FUN HOUSE is opened there is no turning back.

| | My Morning Jacket At Dawn CD (2001)
Stooges songs
$11.65 My Morning Jacket's second album, AT DAWN, builds on the twangy rock of THE TENNESSEE FIRE, while expanding the Kentucky band's sound in numerous directions. The opening title track eases into a dreamy refrain that recalls shoegazer groups of the 1990s, while the following track, "Lowdown," floats along on chiming guitars and a poppy '60s-inspired vibe. "Phone Went West" features an oddly fitting light reggae feel, which is completely contrasted by the fierce Sabbath-like guitar riffs on "Strangulation." Remaining true to the band's Southern roots, MMJ's down-home aesthetic is showcased on the extended blues jam "Honest Man" and Skynyrd-esque "Just Because I Do." Throughout the album and its many moods, the common thread is the distinctive, keening voice of frontman Jim James, as best featured on the gorgeously spare "Bermuda Highway." An accomplished and dynamic ...
| | Grand Funk Railroad Classic Masters CD (2002) Import
Stooges album
$9.79 Recorded between 1970 & 1975. Includes liner notes by Steve Roeser.
Capitol Records launched a midline-priced series called Classic Masters and the 2002 entry for Grand Funk Railroad is meant to appeal to the casual fan. It is intended to replace 1991's Capitol Collectors Series title -- an earlier budget line from the label -- although track-wise it's identical except for one song. Both have 15 cuts, but Classic Masters includes "Take Me" whereas Capitol Collectors Series has "Inside Looking Out." Looking back, it's amazing to realize just how enormously popular these Michigan hard-rockers were in the late '60s and early '70s. For Grand Funk Railroad, popular meant populist blue-collar appeal, and vocalist/guitarist Mark Farner, bass guitarist Mel Schacher, and drummer/vocalist Don Brewer (and, later on, keyboardist Craig Frost) were despised by critics, of course. The merits of anthems like "We're an American Band," "I'm Your Captain/Closer to Home," and the cover "The Loco-Motion" are obvious, but a compilation such as Classic Masters enables deeper appreciation of songs like "Time Machine," "Shinin' On," "Mean Mistreater" (recorded live in 1970 at the Atlanta International Pop Festival), and "Bad Time." Classic Masters is 24-bit digitally remastered, whereas Capitol Collectors Series is credited as being mastered from the original two-track stereo mixes; Classic Masters should be considered the superior collection sound-wise (although it's not as if Grand Funk Railroad's records were as sonically complex as Pink Floyd's), but Capitol Collectors Series has better liner notes. Capitol is to be commended for its overdue CD reissues of Grand Funk Railroad's catalog, but Classic Masters is an excellent sampler die-hard fans like Homer Simpson would approve of. ~ Bret Adams
This 24 BIT fully remastered classic masters contains 15 Grand Funk Railroad hits on one CD and it sounds absolutely wonderful. This classic masters CD has a good representation of Grand Funk Railroad's career at Capitol (69-76) from Time Machine and Mean Misterater, to I'm Your Captian/Closer To Home (There Magus Opus), to We're An American Band (there biggest Hit) Walk Like A Man and Shinin On (Both Big its), to Take me and Bad ...

| | Brian Setzer Knife Feels Like Justice/Live Nude Guitars CD (2007)
Stooges music CDs
$11.59 Brian Setzer may have established himself as the new King of Rockabilly when the Stray Cats broke through in America in 1982, but after the band split in 1984 (only to reunite several times), apparently he wanted to expand his palette a bit, and this two-fer CD includes Setzer's first two solo albums, which found him charting out new creative territory. Released in 1986, The Knife Feels Like Justice is something of an anomaly in Setzer's catalog -- betraying only the slightest hints of his rockabilly history, it's a strong and passionate exercise in heartland rock, with Setzer giving his vocals and songs the central focus rather than his guitar picking and revealing a contemporary lyrical focus that's intelligent and thoughtful without losing the ability to rock on out (especially on the rowdy "Radiation Ranch"). It's a mature and compelling set, but Live Nude Guitars (which was recorded after the first of several Stray Cats reunion albums) is a different story; most of the songs suggest Setzer and his production crew (which included Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics, Chris Thomas, and Larson Paine) were trying to fuse a raw rockabilly mood with the polish of late-'80s synth-friendly studio techniques, and the result is wildly misguided, especially on the ridiculous "When the Sky Comes Tumblin' Down." However, Setzer's guitar work is excellent throughout, there are a few fun numbers (especially the cover of "Nervous Breakdown"), and the harmonica solo from Bruce Willis on "Temper Sure Is Risin'" isn't as painful as you might expect. Still, while loyal Brian Setzer fans will want both of these albums, most casual listeners would be better off getting The Knife Feels Like Justice ...
