One of the more prominent volumes in Nonesuch's 92-volume Explorer series, TRADITIONAL VOCAL & INSTRUMENTAL PIECES features a series of live performances by the Ensemble Nipponia recorded in 1976. The Ensemble Nipponia's repertoire embraced both folk and classical styles, and this disc contains virtuoso performances on instruments as varied as the guitar-like shamisen, the wood flute shakuachi, and the zither-like koto. Traditional Vocal & Instrumental Music music CDs
$9.55 From the old Nonesuch Explorer series comes this album of classical Persian music, originally released in 1974 and re-released on CD in 1991. The album contains a number of nice virtuoso performances on the various instruments of the Persian classical repertoire. The ensemble leader Faramarz Payvar provides some outstanding work on the santur in most of the dastgah performances. Also, the zarb player Mohammad Esmai'li performs an amazing solo on his drum, nearly incorporating melody into the work with a single ...

Traditional Vocal & Instrumental Music songs
$10.19 Recorded in Java. Originally released as JAVANESE COURT GAMELAN on Nonesuch (72044). Includes liner notes by Robert E. Brown and Andrew Toth.
Javanese court gamelan is some of the most refined, beautiful, and strange music you're likely to find. Slow and stately, this music -- the examples here are from Jogyakarta -- offers both constant movement and the floating sense of standing still. Starting with a "Ketawang," the real meat is in the two long gendings, "Tedjånåtå" and "Mandulpati"; the former is a medley of three compositions to accompany a classical court dance, although it's played here more as ...
| | Idjah Hadidjah Explorer Series: West Java - Sundanese Jaipong CD (1987)
Traditional Vocal & Instrumental Music album
$9.79 Recorded in Indonesia between 1979 & 1986. Originally released as TONGGERET on Nonesuch (79173). Includes liner notes by Phillip Yamplosky.
This is an album of the relatively rare, but rather popular, jaipongan style of music from the Sunda region of Indonesia. Its founder, Gugum Gumbira, only created the elements of jaipongan in the late '70s, borrowing heavily from elements of other regional styles along the way. Tonggeret features the ensemble of Gumbira, himself, master drummer Suwanda for the genre's characteristic drumming, and former wayang kulit singer Idjah Hadidjah for the necessary vocals. The music tends to split the lines between traditional and modern. The heavy use of the rebab and the gamelan instruments adds to the mystical air of the music and its traditional ...
