Pianist Fred Hersch has a very different style than Thelonious Monk did, and on this solo tribute CD, he does not attempt to closely emulate Monk. Hersch does hint at Thelonious in spots on the 13 Monk compositions, but mostly performs in a sparse, melodic and quietly playful manner. His interpretations of such songs as "In Walked Bud," "Ask Me Now," "Let's Cool One" and "Misterioso" (which he calls "Five Views of Misterioso") are tasteful yet full of subtle invention. A pleasing and respectful effort. ~ Scott Yanow
Recorded at Ambient Recording Company, Stamford, Connecticut in February, 1997.
Personnel: Fred Hersch (piano).
Entertainment Weekly (1/23/98, p.63) - "Who would have thought that yet another tribute album to the late great jazz innovator Thelonious Monk could uncover new ground? Leave it to Hersch, one of the most prolific and thoughtful players around. Going solo, Hersch analyzes, reviews and refreshes Monk tunes..." - Rating: A- Down Beat (5/98, p.59) - 3 stars (out of 5) - "...the pianist has devised an innovative, multifarious tribute that approaches and deconstructs the monk canon from different perspectives....it depends on how you like your Monk." | | Eric Reed From My Heart CD (2002)
Thelonious CD music
$14.49 Pianist Eric Reed's touch has always been a sensitive one, but From My Heart marks the first time Reed has really consummated this side of his playing, going out of his way to bring a mostly unheard side of him to emotional ballads from popular and classical music as well as jazz. On From My Heart, Reed has chosen the minimalist accompaniment of Cecil Brooks III on drums and Dwayne Burno on bass, giving the pianist ample room to stretch out with each song. On the first piece, Lennon and McCartney's famed "Yesterday," Reed does a tasteful take of the melody, gradually ...

Thelonious songs
$9.69 Recorded live at The Village Vanguard, New York, New York in May 2002. Includes liner notes by Fred Hersch.
Renowned pianist/composer Fred Hersch debuts on Palmetto Records in this classic jazz piano trio performance titled Live At The Village Vanguard. Formally released at a "live" date at the world-renowned jazz club in New York City, Hersch is joined by bassist Drew Gress and drummer Nasheet Waits. In his own words, Hersch has stated that the trio specializes in high lyricism and high danger. Truer words were never spoken as the disc opens with Thelonious Monk's "Bemsha Swing." Fred Hersch is in great form during his solo introduction before the bass and drums swing in. "Phantom of The Bopera" is a sensational bebop original that features the technical virtuosity of the trio and their ability to engage their listeners ...

Thelonious album
$17.15 Singer/composer Michael Gira's 1980s band Swans, with their considerable darkness/bleakness quotient, were perhaps the only outfit that could make Joy Division and Leonard Cohen sound practically jolly. Gira's Angels of Light project, however, is another matter entirely. While the Angels' music is still somewhat grim in lyrical content and vocal timbre, the overwhelmingly intense Swans-like approach has largely given way to a bittersweet melodic presentation. The autumnal, reflective tone is enhanced by Gira's neo-folk proteges Akron/Family, who serve as the backing band.
