Among the scariest movies ever put on celluloid, like its similarly styled sister, RINGU, this tale of death-by-curse is nothing short of blood chilling. With chapters named after each subsequent victim, it plays like a series of increasingly daunting, deadly vignettes. All of the stories surround a haunted house where the evil spirit of a 5-year-old boy still lurks. The first to enter the residence and be cursed is a young hospice worker visiting an elderly client. She finds the boy duct-taped in a closet, where he first appears to her in the form of a black cat, and then shows his human form which is a shockingly ghoulish white face and blackened eyes. Invisible to all except for those who are next to die, his presence seems like a true mystery. But when family members, friends, curious teenagers, and frightened police investigators begin to drop like flies, it is clear that his spirit thrives. Perhaps it is the unsolvable problem of the boy's vengeance that makes the premise so terrifying--his anger and his penalty cannot be curbed. But unforgettable scenes, such as the boy's very dead mother crawling serpentinely down the stairway, deserve the lion's share of the credit for the fearfulness of the film. What's more, the percussive, electronic score by Shiro Sato is spine-tingling. From Japanese director Takeshi Shimizu, whose RINGU was so successful that it received both prequels and sequels--and an American remake, THE RING, with Naomi Watts--fans should not miss this extraordinary fright-fest.
In this eerie tale, a family who is brutally killed in their own home leaves behind an evil spirit lurking in the shadows. When an unknowking homecare worker enters, the spirit is awaikened and a terrifying chain of events begins! DVD features include commentary by director Sam Raimi, documentary, featurette, 4 cast interviews, director interview, behind-the-scenes, outtake footage, and alternate ending. At the time of ANOTHER DAY ON EARTH's release in 2005, it had been 28 years since ambient-music godfather Brian Eno had released an album of vocal-based songs (not counting a 1990 duo record with John Cale). Eno's '70s "pop" albums were part of a different age and represented a different Eno, one who'd laid the groundwork for glam with Roxy Music and was, for all his eccentricities, very much a rock artist. Almost three decades down the line, though, with a career's worth of instrumental, frequently beatless electronic music behind him, Eno turned out a "song" album of a very different kind.
ANOTHER DAY ON EARTH could not be farther from the rock world. Closer to Eno's ambient works of the '80s and '90s, it melds song form and traditional lyric-based templates with a floating, ethereal sonic palette. A couple of the tracks here feature female vocals, but most are centered around Eno's own voice, a measured, low-key, yet surprisingly poignant thing that emanates spirituality and resolve in a way that seems leagues beyond the youthful brashness of, say, TAKING TIGER MOUNTAIN (BY STRATEGY). Liquid synthesizer lines drift along, occasionally intersecting with soft, lyrical guitars and gently undulating rhythms, making Eno's first vocal effort of the 21st century a calm yet powerful creature.
