Also available in a 3-pack with FACE THE MUSIC and DISCOVERY. 1976's A NEW WORLD RECORD is both a classic of commercial '70s pop and an archetypal ELO album. From the outer-space synths and rich orchestrations that open the album to Jeff Lynne's meticulous production and Beatlesque melodies, A NEW WORLD RECORD is magnificent ear candy. Both ambitious enough to appeal to "serious" rock fans and ultra-catchy enough to sound terrific on Top 40 radio (the plaintively gorgeous, McCartney-like "Telephone Line" and the anthemic "Livin' Thing" were well-deserved smashes), ELO was one of the few '70s bands whose appeal covered both the FM and AM spectrums. The album even resurrects "Do Ya," a classic single by Lynne's former band, the Move, in a splashy new version. The next ELO album, 1977's elaborate double-album OUT OF THIS WORLD, was probably the band's commercial high point, but A NEW WORLD RECORD is the group's artistic high-water mark. Jeff Lynne reportedly regards this album and its follow-up, Out of the Blue, as the high points in the band's history. One might be better off opting for A New World Record over its successor, however, as a more modest-sized creation chock full of superb songs that are produced even better. Opening with the opulently ...

Also available in a 3-pack with A NEW WORLD RECORD and DISCOVERY. Master Sound releases are 24-karat gold CDs remastered from first-generation masters. This process utilizes 20-bit technology and Sony's revolutionary "Super Bit Mapping" system. ELO was big enough by 1974 that some people actually suggested that ELDORADO featured Satanic backward-masking. Of course, the idea was ludicrous; but the band playfully responded by adding a backward message to "Fire on High," the opening instrumental on 1975's FACE THE MUSIC. Besides "Fire on High," which was used as background music for countless television programs in the '70s, this album's eight lengthy tracks include two enormous hits, "Evil Woman" and the McCartneyesque ballad "Strange Magic." Decades later, these two tracks are still in constant rotation on classic-rock ...

In some ways, 1973's ON THE THIRD DAY is the first "true" ELO album. Though co-founder Roy Wood had left the band to form the more experimental Wizzard after the first album, his influence was still all over 1972's ELO ...

Original London Cast includes: Jean Bayless, Constance Shacklock, Olive Gilbert, Silvia Beamish, Lynn Kennington. Recorded at the London Palace Theatre, London, England in 1961. Liner Note Author: David Foil. Recording information: London, England (05/28/1961). DATE: June 1961, the London production of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II's final musical, The Sound of Music, opened on May 18, 1961, and was an even bigger hit than its Broadway counterpart, running 2,385 performances, until January 14, 1967, which made it the longest running West End production of a Broadway musical, a record that still stood 30 years later. This success came despite the lack of well-known names in the cast. Jean Bayless starred as Maria, the postulant who becomes the wife of Captain von Trapp in 1930s Austria and helps turn his large family into a singing group, the role originated on Broadway by Mary Martin. The cast album made it evident that Bayless had listened carefully to Martin's interpretation, though she came off as a bit more formal and stagy, more, well, British than her predecessor. Nevertheless, ...

On his score for Ron Howard's brooding Western The Missing, James Horner reins in some of his lush tendencies as a composer, delivering a restrained but still emotional collection of music. Nevertheless, even the score's smaller compositions, such as "New Mexico, 1885," retain the epic sound that defines Horner's work. This tension is put to particularly good use on "Dawn to Dusk; The Riderless Horse," which begins with delicate flutes and strings before soaring into a quietly majestic melody that becomes darker and more ominous as it unfolds. Most of the score alternates between yearning and hope, as on "The Search Begins," and eerie portent, as on "Dark and Restless Wind" and "The Brujo's Storm -- A Loss of Innocence." Horner's music also ties into the film's Native American ...
