El Niño is an ambitious project that could have easily become overblown in execution, but thankfully that is not the case. This warm and sometimes moving oratorio humanizes the Nativity story by emphasizing Mary's perspective and the miracle of birth. The texts are in English, Spanish, and Latin and are based on a variety of sources, including the New Testament Apocrypha and contemporary Latin American poetry. The music also incorporates a wide range of styles and influences, including jazz, show tunes, and Handel's "Messiah," but it coheres under Adams' distinctive rhythmic approach. It begins with the steady repetition of a D minor chord, followed by the introduction of polyrhythms and dissonance, as well as countertenors Brian Cummings and Dan Brubeck. Both of them, as well as the third countertenor, Steven Rickards, give golden performances on this album. The same is true for the three soloists, mezzo soprano Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, soprano Dawn Upshaw, and baritone Willard White, who are all cast in flexible roles. This may be composer John Adams's most ambitious undertaking to date, one that moves him further out of the "minimalist" category. A massive, sprawling opus, it bombards the listener with a dizzying array of swirling melodies, chugging rhythms, vivid sonic colors, and lush orchestral textures. Yet for all its complexity, this three-movement work never overwhelms the ear. Adams makes the work emotionally compelling by creating a variety of moods that sometimes blend smoothly and at other times collide with a clamor.
Poignant melodies churn and percolate until they explode into raucous climaxes; jubilant fanfares crash into craggy dissonance; motifs that dance and spin as if out of control somehow resolve into peaceful reveries. Here is an anthology of John Adams' comparatively small output for the piano, whether solo, duo, or in tandem with another instrument. The title of the album -- also the first composition in the sequence -- gives you an idea of what to expect, for Adams' motor rhythms turn several of these pieces into travelogues. You're in a car, watching the scenery flash by as the sophisticated well-tuned engine sets the rhythm, slowing to a contemplative crawl before picking up speed again. This is certainly the case in Road Movies, with its fast-slow-fast, three-movement layout and running ostinatos -- and Hallelujah Junction, named after a tiny hamlet near Adams' cabin retreat deep in the Sierra Nevada, has the same ABA tempo structure and similar motorized driving ideas. Road Movies introduces a violin into the mix, with star violinist Leila Josefowicz scraping away lustily and rhythmically at the first movement, as if this were prime Stravinsky, and John Novacek on piano, while Hallelujah is left to the duo pianos of Nicolas Hodges and Rolf Hinds. American Berserk is a more complex animal; the rhythms shift, lurch, and generally make the life of anyone who sight-reads it miserable over a span of six minutes.
