JOKO was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best World Music Album.
Ever since Youssou N'Dour started turning heads in Senegal with his band Super Etoile, he's made the leap to world music eminence thanks to back-breaking touring and the support of famous fans like Peter Gabriel. Following a six-year sabbatical from releasing music in the US, N'Dour made a millennial comeback with JOKO (THE LINK), an amalgam of West African, Caribbean, and Western influences.
Backed by a coterie of Senegalese studio musicians, N'Dour uses his soaring vocals to great effect on stellar cuts like the hypnotic mbalax-infused "Mademba (The Electricity Is Out Again)," and the joyously uplifting "Birima." Elsewhere, N'Dour's Gabriel appears on "This Dream," a number notable for Super Etoile guitarist Jimi Mbaye making his Stratocaster sound like a traditional Senegalese xalam (five-stringed guitar). Other notable supporting players include sax player Thierno Koite, whose Branford Marsalis-like tone gives the rhythmically dark "Miss" a forlorn edge, and the percussionists who supply an upbeat aura to the tribute to Senegal's peasants that is "Beykat." Leading the charge throughout is N'Dour, whose pure, agile vocals are particularly effective on the infectious "Liggeey" and "My Hope Is in You," an eternally optimistic bilingual song.

Joko: The Link
$5.95 The staid album cover -- with a photo of a teabag featured on the CD booklet -- gives no indication of the unique African-laced, chill-flavored cosmopolitan music that lies within. Or the fascinating history of the project's two chief masterminds, guitarist Franck Balloffet (from France) and drummer/keyboardist Phil Bunch (southern California). The two first met as members of Los Angeles' premier African band, Bateke Beat, featuring multi-instrumentalist Fidel Bateke, formerly of Fela Kuti's ensemble from Nigeria. The group was the house band at the legendary L.A. club Flaming Colossus, as well as Malibu's Adobe. Balloffet previously had played jazz in France with the Guitar Big Band of Michel Perez. In the U.S., he studied with Scott Henderson (Joe Zawinul, Chick Corea) and Joe Diorio. Previously, Bunch had formed the Bros. with future Surf Punk Mark Miller as well as Secret Spot, an offshoot of the Surf ...

Joko: The Link
$14.49 Eighteen years and nine albums into bandhood, In Flames show zero sign of age. While the fierce Swedish band occasionally stops to breathe, as with the baroque folk break midway through "Alias," the metal assault on A SENSE OF PURPOSE is mostly relentless. That's not to say the 2008 follow-up to the massively successful COME CLARITY (and first album for Koch) lacks melody, but that the hook-laden riffs pile on top of one another for a complex yet captivating wall of sound. It's a fire that can consume, as on the taut "Move Through Me," or smolder somberly as on "The Chosen ...
