Over 15 years into their career, Savatage refused to stay still -- if anything, the group continued to improve in the '90s, as their 14th album, The Wake of Magellan, proved. Long ago, the group began fusing heavy metal with progressive rock, but they've rarely recorded a concept album as enthralling as The Wake of Magellan. Employing a fictional character, Hector Del-Fuego Magellan, a supposed descendent of famed explorer Ferdinand Magellan, the band retells two true stories. The first is the tale of the Maersk Dubai, a Taiwanese freight ship whose captain, upon discovering three stowaways on board, decided to throw the offending passengers overboard. The second is the story of journalist Veronica Guerin, who died while combating drug pushers in her home country of Ireland. Magellan relates these two stories -- some of the narrative is enhanced by an epic poem in the liner notes, which was written, along with the lyrics, by producer Paul O'Neill -- over the course of the album. It's an ambitious effort, to say the least, but Savatage's surprisingly graceful music -- not only does it fit the story line, but it has sweeping melodies, intricate arrangements and stunning solos that are compelling on their own terms -- making it a fascinating voyage. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Savatage: Zak Stevens (vocals); Chris Caffery, Al Pitrelli (guitar, background vocals); Jon Oliva (keyboards, background vocals); Johnny Lee Middleton (bass, background vocals); Jeff Plate (drums).
Savatage Wake Of Magellan Songs Wake Of Magellan Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Classic? ..a true collectors CD!!!! GREAT SAVATAGE stuff!!!! "METAL"!!! Submitted by david.jurpik (Seattle) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Best Savatage CD to date!!! TO put it simply, this is Savatage's best album to date! The quality of musicianship on this album is mind boggling. The band really really goes all out on this album and the end result is incredible. This is the first CD in a very long time that I listen to from beginning to end and actually enjoy every song in the process. There is a story in the album, but more importantly there is awesome music! This is one of my favorite CDs ever...It continues the direction they have taken starting with Edge of Thorns and followed with Dead Winter Dead. Highly recommended! A magnificent epic story put to music I first heard of Savatage through a friend. I decided I would give them a listen and picked up this CD at a rummage sale. I was completely surprised by the amount of grandeur and complexity a band can create. The whole album has a certain underlying theme and musical consistency. Just when you think the album couldn't get any more entertaining, it ends some of the most amazing ballads I have evcr heard. Plus, the bonus tracks at the end are great piano-only versions of earlier songs by the band. Check this album out if you ever want to sit down and be entertained by a great story and epic songs. One of the Best Albums of All Time Not only is this one of the most profound, philosophically engaging albums around, it also suceeds in drawing upon the listeners' emotions better than any other album I heard. The lyrics are breathtakingly expressive, along with a gigantic poem commenting upon the events alongside the lyrics with great detail and artistry, and the music, while never as sentimental as some of Savatage's earlier works, manages to produce the entire range of emotions, from courage and hope to profound sadness and introspection. As a concept album, this is heavier than Streets and more austere than Dead Winter Dead, but the final tracks, performed by Jon Oliva in more heartfelt mood, provide a perfect counterbalance to the complicated fury of some earlier tracks (Paragons of Innocence, The Wake of Magellan, The Hourglass). It is especially wonderful to hear him now personally address Criss Oliva in the remake of Alone You Breathe. An outstanding album in every way, probably my favorite CD of all time. don't waste your money! This is the worst album I have ever
bought, bar none....
And I really like Savatage!
Stick with "Hall of the Mountain King",
or "Power of the Night" and you can't
go wrong. Submitted by a reviewer (daytona, fl., usa) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 3 found this helpful.

Wake Of Magellan music CDs
$13.89 If a huge meteor were to fatally damage our beloved planet Earth, it might be expected that only two things would survive -- cockroaches and prog metal. Despite a rapid turnover of hard rock styles and subgenres over the years, prog metal always seems to survive. A case in point: the fourth release by San Francisco's Zero Hour, 2005's A Fragile Mind. All the pieces are in place for a prog metal party -- singer Fred Marshall's Geoff Tate-esque vocals, guitarist Jasun Tipton's John Petrucci-esque six-string work, and (of course) thinking man's lyrics and tricky song structures. This is the type of stuff that requires hours upon hours of listening alone in your bedroom to be able to play, and Zero Hour's instrumental chops are never in question ...
