Easily one of the most bizarre ensembles to ever grace a major label, Japan's Boredoms debuted on Reprise Records in 1993, riding a strange cloud of buzz that was generated by Sonic Youth, the Beastie Boys, and other outsider-loving bands. While fans of avant-garde saxophonist John Zorn had already heard Boredoms frontman Yamatsuka Eye's frenetic yelps on the former's Naked City recordings, POP TATARI introduced the US alternative-rock crowd to the wildly eclectic and chaotic "bore" aesthetic. Clearly nobody tried to rein in the Osaka-based collective's manic energy on this outing, since the record is filled with propulsive rhythms, metallic guitar freak-outs, and abrupt stylistic shifts. Even songs that seem to cling to a pop melody (see the chiming keyboard line of "Bore Now Bore") are gleefully sabotaged by sharp bursts of noise. Although most rock fans will meet POP TATARI with bewilderment, those open to highly adventurous and experimental music will be intrigued by this typically bold Boredoms album.
Recorded at Sanwa Recording Studio, Osaka, Japan.
Boredoms: God Mom, Yoshi-Kawa (vocals); Yama-Motor (guitar, vocals); King Kazoo Eye (kazoo); Hyla (bass, vocals); Yoshimmy P-We, Atari (drums, vocals).
Uncut (p.122) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[They] are incorporating funk into the exuberant, increasingly musicianly chaos." Melody Maker (2/12/94, p.41) - 8 - Excellent - "...A massive Manga comic for your stereo, this manages to thrill, shock and amuse every time the laser hits...." Pop Tatari album
$15.39 The CD reissue of DOUBLE NICKELS ON A DIME includes 43 songs. Two songs have been deleted from the original LP to insure playback on all CD players.
Principally recorded at Radio Tokyo, Venice, California in November 1983 and April 1984. Originally issued as a 2-LP set.
This sprawling double-length release is the Minutemen's undisputed high-water mark, and one of the seminal platters of the post-punk, pre-grunge years. It perfectly encapsulates the strengths shown in their early works, then ups the ante. DOUBLE NICKELS runs the gamut from hardcore funk and honky-tonk to vaguely avant-garde experimentation, ...
| | Boredoms Super Are CD (1998)
Pop Tatari CD music
$10.79 Surfacing again with an American release after a couple years of absence, the Boredoms showed themselves to still be truly a unique proposition with Super Ae. Taking some more of the prog/Kraut influences that crept into earlier efforts while still firing up the amps all around, Eye and his cohorts (forming a core quintet this time around) once again become the most out-there band in the world. "Super You" is a simply fantastic way to start, with initial whizzing stereo-to-stereo sounds leading into a wonderful collection of slow, ponderous death rock riffs that sound like all the Black Sabbath and Metallica wannabes of the world gathered to create one massive opening fanfare via guitars. Logically the Boredoms spike the punch by interrupting things with sped-up tape sounds and pitch changes, making the proceedings all the more fun. From there, Super Ae continues along to something close to a concept album; each track feels like a perfect lead in to the rest, while the whole sense is of one long, mantra-like ...

| | Quartertons Graveyard Frame CD (2008)
Pop Tatari album
$9.75 The 1/4 Tons is a high energy Blues/Rock band with recording and traveling aspirations. Just getting it off the ground right now. We will be playing starting in May of 2007 locally here in Boise, and then touring hopefully by next year. Nathan Jay & The 1/4 Tons started as just a fill in band to open for one of my heroes, Mike Zito, last February. Everything clicked so well that we all took it as a sign and decided to move forward with the project. So much of that has to do with the fact that Cory J. McClymonds and Dave John are an unstoppable rhythm section together and virtuoso players in my mind. Also a lot has to do with the fact that we have all played together before in different bands. Thanks for the support and keep the Blues alive! -Nathan Jay Moody Nathan Jay Moody has a charm that lights up a stage. It would be easy to worry that Graveyard Frame from NJM's Quartertons wouldn't be able to capture the swagger and delight that flows from the stage as they play around town. No problem here! Not that the studio setting doesn't lend an additional complexity to the lead guitar mastery of Nathan Jay or the that the intensity of the lyrics and vocals isn't more polished and powerful. It just that you can almost still feel the smokey bar, and the click of glasses somewhere in the background. Graveyard is an easy listen. It grips you and keeps you listening. Nathan uses his guitars fret broad like gymnast Mary Lou Retton used those bar things. Swinging back and forth, then nailing the dismount. Good thing the solid and stoic Cory is around to keep things from spinning out of control or someone might get hurt! Will admit I like the Quartertons best when they slow down and play blues. SRV fans will enjoy Blood Red Texas Moon, Crying in the Rain. Looking for a rocker, how about, Lovin' Gun. My favorite has to be Little Piece o' Lightin'. It is truly from the streets ...
