On their second LP, Dr. Frank and company sharpen their pop hooks and instrumental prowess, though admittedly, they are still a far cry from being Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Based on "Now We Are Twenty-One"'s references to Captain Crunch cereal and The Brady Bunch, one might dismiss Dr. Frank as another pop-culture damaged hipster-doofus opus, but "The History of the Concept of the Soul" erases any notion that Frank is stupid. A kind of master's thesis set to a rockin' beat, "The History of the Concept of the Soul" comes as close as any song has in explaining the meaning of life in under two minutes. Catchy and irresistible, the song was a staple of punk rock mix tapes in the late 1980s. Although the rest of the album is fleshed out with other strong tunes, MTX had still not yet reached their creative peak. Like Everybody's Entitled to Their Own Opinion, the Lookout! Night Shift... reissue features quite a few bonus tracks. ~ Kembrew McLeod

Night Shift At The Thrill Factory album
$13.75 A founding leader of the influential cult band the dB's, Chris Stamey has spent most of last 15 years producing other people's discs (Alejandro Escovedo, Yo La Tengo, Whiskeytown) rather than creating his own. Not counting a 1995 instrumental album, Travels in the South marks his first record since 1991, when he released both the solo Fireworks and Mavericks, a duet disc with his old dB's partner Peter Holsapple. South, however, shows little sign of rustiness. The album kicks off with the glorious "14 Shades of Green," a chimey gem that takes a nostalgic look at a hometown. This leadoff track also establishes the theme of traveling that runs through the disc. Songs like "Insomnia," "Ride," and the title track all touch upon the feeling of life in transit. The ...

Night Shift At The Thrill Factory songs
$12.39 "Loser" was nominated for a 1995 Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance.
The definitive outsider, Beck is a lonely voice raging against the stifling winds of conformity and complacency in both our mainstream culture and in our stock-model counter-culture (check out one of his first indie releases, "MTV Makes Me Want To Smoke Crack"). Growing up in heartland America, Beck dropped out of high school and cultivated his muse on a combination of traditional folk music and Delta blues, not unlike another legendary outsider from the heartland--Bob Dylan.
Already well-known in the New York and Los Angeles folk scenes, Beck's stature as an independent artist was cemented by college radio programmers. While terms like "alternative" came to mean next to nothing, Beck's 12" version of "Loser," released on the Bongload label, became an underground hit. The music he makes on MELLOW GOLD is an unruly synthesis of Americana, completely devoid of cliches as Beck stumbles on one fresh idea after another with a rare sense of discovery. At any given moment you might hear an Indian raga ("Steal My Body Home"), chicken-fried hip-hop ("Loser" and "Soul Suckin Jerk"), a John Lee Hooker/Rolling Stones shuffle ("Fuckin' With My Head"), post-modernist noise ("Mutherfuker") or echoes of down-home blues ("Blackhole").
Beck makes his diverse range of sources on MELLOW GOLD work. Each song sounds lived-in and alive, all run hurdy-gurdy through ...
