Singer Chizmo Charles made his recording debut as a leader on this CD, at the age of 70. What is more remarkable than his very late start is that Charles' voice could pass for 50. His versatility and the pure joy in his singing are quite appealing. Although largely a blues date, Charles also performs "Angel Eyes" quite credibly and the music ranges from swing to soul. The highlights include "Bed Bug Boogie," Elmore James' "Shake Your Moneymaker," "The Walkin' Blues," and "Bad Bad Whiskey." With fine support given by the four-piece Midnight Horns (which includes Kenny Blake on alto and tenor), a solid rhythm section, slide guitarist James Dougherty, Jr. (who wrote half of the tunes), and James King on harmonica, the singer is heard throughout in near-exuberant form. Why did it take Chizmo Charles so long to record? ~ Scott Yanow

Up All Night album
$15.65 Recorded between 1962 and 1970. Includes liner notes by David Nathan.
Although former child R&B star Esther Phillips really hit her mature peak in the '60s, commercially she had a hard time finding a niche. "Release Me," her uptown R&B version of a country song, made the pop Top Ten in 1962. But she only dented the charts occasionally over the course of the next decade, despite recording frequently in a number of styles, usually (but not always) for Atlantic. This two-CD, 40-song set is an excellent distillation of work that isn't well known even by R&B devotees, drawing from about half a dozen albums and numerous singles, mostly from Atlantic, but also including 45s she made for Roulette in 1969; about half of the songs on this collection, in fact, were never issued on an album. Phillips was to a degree damned by her versatility: too suave and refined to be classified as a straight soul singer, she takes on jazz, pop, show tunes, blues, the Beatles (her gender-morphed "And I Love Him" was a substantial hit), the Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, and more. Like Etta James, the Columbia-era Aretha Franklin, and Nina Simone, she was one of those singers who fell between genre cracks: not quite soul, rock, R&B, jazz, pop, or blues, though elements of all those styles were present in her work. Actually, she wasn't quite as good as any o

Up All Night album
$12.65 "Ambition of an Underground Rapper".....the second album in the "Underground Rapper" NOVA musical trilogy!!!!"A more focused album" critics are raving..."Better than Determination"..."The best hip hop record released in years!!!" It's 17 songs worth of finely crafted NOVA music featuring the first ever batch of 'NOVI-NOV BEAT' production by NOVA himself....AND...production work by Mindbender, E-Dan, and more!! Includes the smash hit "Beautiful Day" and "Bad On My Own"....do yourself a favor and indulge in PURE MUSICAL GENIUS!!!WHO IS NOVA???There are those that "rap"....and those whom "sing"......these simplistic watered down descriptions of the art of hip hop are the basic categories you can break MOST artist down into....However...."MOST" is far from an apt description of NOVA. Born Micol Scott Rankin, NOVA was raised in several small towns in Western Pennsylvania. Spending most of his youth moving house to house nearly every 2 years between the hard knock ways of the ghetto neighborhoods and the middle class suburbias....adapting to different ways of life became a natural ability. He always had a deep love for entertaining his peers whether in class joking or with singing his favorite songs. Growing up on the genre bending sounds of Madonna, Michael Jackson, Will Smith, and many others...NOVA was in an area where your music was defined by your ethnicity. However, he would shy from such conformity...never one to fit "the mold". Learning how to accept peoples differences and love all peoples uniqueness shaped his open minded approach to music. Music would be a way of getting thorough hard times for him growing up. At an odd turning point in his life...NOVA suffered from a rare blood disease that nearly took his life. After spending countless nights in the hospital with his family by his side and many prayers....a seemingly unavoidable tragedy...turned to a miraculous recovery. A young NOVA would learn the true value of life on that night...spending each day since....living by his own words of wisdom "Pray and Push"........praying and pushing each day to live out his true dream....of entertaining the world..... He sings. With a profound nearly majestic ability to create unforgettable vocal arrangements that seem to never leave your head....singing well crafted harmonies and beautifully self-written choruses at times....while sounding like Louie Armstrong at others..... never one to take himself TOO seriously. He raps. Comparable to Jay-Z....Eminem..... effortlessly weaving beautiful soundscape ...
