| | Speak CD - Import No-Man Discography of CDs
In an interesting artistic choice, the next full No-Man album to appear after Wild Opera was, in ways, the band's first. Originally surfacing as a self-released cassette in the late '80s, Speak was reissued in the late '90s in slightly different form. Rather than a straight re-release, Bowness re-recorded all his vocals for the songs, though the music, with only two exceptions -- "Curtain Dream" and "Night Sky, Sweet Earth" -- stayed the same as when Wilson and founder member Ben Coleman recorded it. The result is an intriguing and sometimes revelatory revisit to the band's earliest days, with Bowness able to address what he felt were some of his vocal limitations or excesses at the time. Wilson's own musical work at this point is generally much more spare and low key than the full-bodied drama and dance which would soon emerge, but he's already clearly demonstrating his ear for both performance and production. Two noteworthy covers appear -- the first, "Pink Moon," is the Nick Drake song of note, confirming Bowness' long-held love for the singer years before his end-of-century popularity. Bowness' delivery is a winner, Wilson's soft guitar plucking and reversed playing textures a fine counterpart. The other remake is a Donovan cover -- not "Colours," which would later become a key early single, but "River Song," given a sweetly haunting performance on chiming guitar and backing keyboards, Bowness' singing sure and supple. Familiar cuts from later releases surface as well. Early B-side "Iris Murdoch Cut Me Down" is already there in structure if not in total form, while the dramatic conclusion to Loveblows and Lovecries, "Heaven's Break," appears here practically the same as the final take, sheer epic loveliness incarnate, with Richard Felix's guest harmonica adding an extra touch not found on the future version. ~ Ned Raggett
Recorded between 1987 and 1989 by Steven Wilson and Tim Bowness.

$10.59 With cover photography from Miles Laboratories, the Alka-Seltzer theme song that went Top Five in America in December of 1965 is the jewel on this 12-song instrumental recording from Ventures producer Joe Saraceno and Phil Spector arranger Perry Botkin Jr. They had worked together on Gene McDaniels' "A Hundred Pounds of Clay" in the same capacity (for Liberty, the same label), so they were poised at the right place and time to enable this television commercial to cross over to the pop charts. Musicians are not credited, but three of them are guitarist Dan Hamilton, bassist Joe Frank Carollo, and drummer Tommy Reynolds of Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds, who would land in the Top Five again in 1971 with "Don't Pull Your Love" and top the charts almost ten years after this initial hit with the middle-of-the-road classic "Fallin' in Love." This album has interesting versions of "Let's Hang On" and "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right," both hits for the Four Seasons in the exact same time frame (winter 1965), taking a cue from The Bob Crewe Orchestra Plays the 4 Seasons' Hits LP of instrumental recordings. But don't think Saraceno and Botkin ...

$12.23 There must have been something in the water in 1970s Memphis. Not only did the town turn out an unprecedented amount of great R&B, it also hosted a sterling power-pop scene including Big Star, Tommy Hoehn, Van Duren, and Anglophile quartet the Scruffs. Led by McCartney-esque vocalist Stephen Burns, the Scruffs mixed Beatle worship, Big Star-ish rockers, and Raspberries-like pop on their 1977 debut album, WANNA MEET THE SCRUFFS? which became a power-pop cult classic. The Scruffs split up in '79 (though Burns would lead a new version decades later) but the melodic charms and punchy pop hooks of this album are a timeless treat.

$9.85 Even legendary Stax guitarist Steve Cropper couldn't save this album. Cropper produced it and played on three cuts, but his soulful approach and the band's determination to play blue-eyed funk just don't mesh. The horn section sounds ready to break out into "I Can't Turn You Loose" throughout the Cropper-penned "Consideration," an interesting glimpse into what might have been had Cold Blood chosen a different road. Singer Lydia Pense is in fine form as always. ~ Mark Allan
