Following the success of their self-titled debut, the Ozark Mountain Daredevils' sophomore release, It'll Shine When It Shines, continues on their already established path of California-style country-rock. This release contained what would ultimately prove to be their greatest hit, "Jackie Blue," which ended up peaking at number three on the pop chart. Although "Jackie Blue" is by far the least countrified track on the album, it embodies the casual, understated groove of the band that could be found on any of the Daredevils' releases. It may be a natural sense of restraint (otherwise known as taste) or just a pipes issue that keeps R&B siren Tamia from engaging in cliche melisma histrionics on her self-titled debut. Similarly, it may be a keen ear for perfect pop/R&B hooks or just a collective unconsciousness thing that brings her to base "Falling For You" around a sample of the Emotions' '70s classic "Best Of My Love." Regardless of the motivations behind her choices, TAMIA presents a new voice in a flattering light. VENUS ISLE heralds the return of Zippo-waving, head-bobbing AOR and the larger-than-life guitar god. Eric Johnson is fully capable of accepting that lofty mantle. He combines dizzying dexterity with a harmonically advanced compositional style that encompasses progressive rock, blues and jazz fusion.
Disdaining the shred-and-burn approach favored by many of his peers, Johnson opts instead for an atmospheric, delicately textured sound on VENUS ISLE. This sonic featherbed is realized with the help of synth player Steve Barber, whose keyboard washes and arpeggios shadow Johnson's guitar throughout the album. Johnson himself contributes a fair amount of synth (triggered by both guitar and keyboards), a testament to the fact that he is a texturalist first and a chopsmeister second--though his storied axemanship is featured prominently on tunes like "Camel's Night Out" and "All About You." Johnson has put as much care into his arrangements, lyrics and composition as his guitar playing on VENUS ISLE. For a guitarist on his level, that's quite a bit of care.

This generous two-disc compilation does an excellent job of tracing soul legend Marvin Gaye's career. It moves from his earliest, most pop-oriented recordings ("How Sweet It Is," "I'll Be Doggone") to his famed duets with Tammi Terrell ("Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing") and his later, more socially conscious work from the WHAT'S GOING ON era. Things kick off marvelously with the vibrant "Stubborn Kind of Fellow," where Marvin works his magic around sassy vocal assists from the Vandellas and a slightly Latin-tinged arrangement sporting flute and cowbell.
Other stops along the way include songs from the ultimate make-out album LET'S GET IT ON, the latter-day glory of the subtly sensual "Sexual Healing," and of course the immortal "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," the scorned-love anthem whose ominous intro alone is enough to secure Mr. Gaye a place in pop heaven. If you're interested in this R&B giant's music but just want one bases-covering collection, this is the definitive release for you.
The fantastic batch of Gaye's early-'60s pop-soul singles, including "Stubborn Kind of Fellow," "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)" and his duets with Tammi Terrell ("Ain't No Mountain High Enough"), is alone worth the price of the set. Transitional singles like "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" hint at the groove-oriented approach Gaye would perfect in the '70s with his socio-political masterpiece WHAT'S GOING ON, and his paean to desire LET'S GET IT ON. Smooth funk workouts like "Trouble Man" and "Got to Give It Up" flesh out disc 2. Though Motown's collection still wins out on wealth of material (it has 47 tracks to GOLD's 34), GOLD is still a top-notch sampler, covering all aspects of the soul icon's dynamic career.
Possibly the best single-disc retrospective of the late, great Soul singer's career, this 1994 compilation on Motown features 22 of his biggest and best spanning the years , 1968-84.
