(1 Customer Review)
HEADLINES AND DEADLINES is a 16-track greatest hits collection by Norway's A-Ha featruing their hit "Take On Me."
Norway's a-ha took "Take on Me" to the number one spot on Billboard's Top 40 in 1985, thanks to the award-winning animated video that accompanied it. Still, a-ha contributed rather accordingly to the '80s pop sound, drenching their music with bouncy riffs and employing the keyboard as the foundation to their colorful formula. Headlines and Deadlines: The Hits of a-ha assembles all of their singles together, a definite one-stop for all of their music. Combining ballads and radiant '80s pop, this set includes their most fervent offering in "The Sun Always Shines on T.V.," which hit number 20 in 1986 and originated from Hunting High and Low, the same album that included "Take on Me." After this album, the band's next couple of releases, East of the Sun and Memorial Beach, were total washouts, which makes this compilation all the more worthy. Other notables include remixed versions of "Hunting High and Low" and "You Are the One," as well as the theme song to The Living Daylights. Though comparisons to Duran Duran are difficult to avoid, a-ha did harbor some distinct qualities in their glossy sound, and quite a few of their songs still contain some redeeming factors, but are better appreciated when lined up in compilation form. ~ Mike DeGagne
Import only 1991 retrospective from the Norwegian trio containing all of their hit singles up to that point. This collection features a nice blend of their ballads and Synthpop nuggets including their #1 U.S. smash 'Take On Me', their U.S. top 20 hit 'The Sun Always Shines On TV', the theme song to the 007 Bond film, 'The Living Daylights' (which appears here in it's original single version) along with remixed versions of 'Hunting High and Low' and 'You are the One'. Other highlights include the a track specifically recorded for this collection, 'Move to Memphis' (different to the version they recorded for their Memorial Beach album). 16 tracks. Warner. Headlines & Deadlines (Hits Of) CD music
$10.49 Out of print in the U.S.! Scoundrel Days was the Norwegian trio's sophomore album, originally released in 1986. For anyone expecting a repeat of their debut album (and it's hit single 'Take On Me') were surprised to find a darker, moodier beast altogether. Scoundrel Days that seemed to shake off the bubblegummy Synthpop sound of their debut and replace it with an equally melodic batch of eclectic tracks that relied heavily on atmosphere. Features the singles 'Cry Wolf', 'I've Been Losing You' and 'Manhattan Skyline'.

| | Emerson, Lake, And Palmer Original Bootleg Series From Manticore Vaults, Vol. 1 CDs (2001)
Headlines & Deadlines (Hits Of) music CDs
$45.35 This set and its companion, the eight-CD volume two, display all the strengths that made Emerson, Lake & Palmer one of the world's most popular bands during the '70s, and the weakness that comes with a trio's attempt to play complicated music. Keith Emerson was a virtuoso keyboard player, Greg Lake supplied a pleasant voice and flair for writing melodic songs, and Carl Palmer played drums as though he would perish if he stopped. But the group lacked the depth of fellow progressive rock bands, such as Yes and King Crimson. Those groups supplied multiple lead instrumentalists -- Yes with their guitar/keyboard tandem and Crimson with their venerable guitarist, Robert Fripp, and a series of cohorts who played saxophone, violin, or second guitar. These and other bands (e.g., Genesis) also relied on more than one songwriter. In ELP, Emerson was the lone lead player of consequence, while Lake was the only distinctive songwriter (for a handful of albums, anyway); Emerson was better at adapting pieces written by his classical heroes, especially Aaron Copland, than writing original material. When the band was on a roll, however, few of any genre could match them. The title of this package tells the story; these concert tapes were obtained from bootleg sources, most of them well-known to ELP aficionados. Inevitably, bootlegs display less than perfect sound. This collection is no exception. On the plus side, all are listenable. These shows, recorded between September 1971 and August 1972, contain much repetition. The lengthy "Take a Pebble" appears in all four concerts, as does "Tarkus" in its entirety. You'll have your fill of Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" and Copland's "Hoedown." ELP diehards won't mind because the improvisation breaks by Emerson make each version distinct. Casual fans and the prog-curious will find this to be a bit much and would do better to search for the two-CD King Biscuit Flower Hour: Greatest Hits Live set or one ...
