The majority of music fans are familiar with the legendary Ohio Players through such mid- to late-'70s pop-funk hits as "Love Rollercoaster," "Fire," and "Fopp." What many don't realize is that the band had been around since the '60s, and released a trilogy of hard funk records from 1972-1973 on the Westbound label -- Pain, Pleasure, and Ecstasy -- that were easily comparable to the early-'70s classics by their rival Westbound labelmates, Funkadelic. And since the albums have been out-of-print for some time, the European import Orgasm: The Very Best of the Westbound Years is a solid collection of tracks from this era. Included is the 1972 novelty hit "Funky Worm," as well as all the sizzling title tracks from the three albums. A pair of songs from outside the trilogy is added, "Climax" (one of the collection's best tracks) and a cover of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On," both from 1974. A previously unissued track, "Ain't That Lovin' You (For More Reasons Than One)," is tacked on the end, making Orgasm an excellent anthology of the Ohio Players' early years, before they achieved mass mainstream success. ~ Greg Prato

This compilation will fill in the gaps in a Ohio Players collection, it includes the best pre-mercury stuff, but it pales next to the 1974-77 period at Mercury....a few nice Cuts, but only worthwhile for the most ardent

 Pure Uncut Funk
Although I love the Mercury stuff, I vibe to the Westbound grooves just as much, if not more. The Westbound titles are generally more blues based, but unmistakably funky. Can't miss. Classic Material!

Great soul/funk
The Ohio Player's Westbound stuff is not inferior to OP's Mercury stuff, just different. In the late 60's and early 70's funk was just being developed and this is one of the bands that laid the groundwork. This album is the proof. Pain, Pleasure, and Extacy was the shiznit back in the day. So was "Walt's First Trip" and "The Funky Worm". Everyone who dug funky music was in to the jams on this album. It's earthy, soulful, funky, loose and tight. From the time "Pain" came out to the time of "Honey" The OHIO PLAYER'S albums were some of the most respected in Funk. Even though they were not a great live band. The Albums they came out with during that period were always in tune to what was happening in Funk. (westbound era included)
