The Bee Gees made a commercial comeback outside the U.S. with 1987's E.S.P. and its single, "You Win Again." One, on the other hand, had an improved chart showing in the U.S., while sales fell off elsewhere. The Bee Gees are remarkable pop craftsmen -- "It's My Neighborhood" is a canny, if blatant, rewrite of Michael Jackson's "Beat It," for example, and it only reminds you that Jackson's falsetto whoops owe something to Barry Gibb. And, say what you will, "One" and "House of Shame" are convincing pop music. ("One" was a Top Ten comeback hit that topped soft rock radio playlists.) This stuff works as pop for the same reason "I've Gotta Get a Message to You" and "You Should Be Dancing" did: the melodies are catchy, the hooks are deathless, and the vocals convey emotion over meaning. It may be weightless, but it's polished. ~ William Ruhlmann

$12.35 This album was originally released in 1990 & it features Johnny's then band mixing funk & blues, with son Shuggie Otis providing guitar, bass & organ. Also features Ramona & La Dee Streeter.
Personnel includes: Johnny Otis, Shuggie Otis, Ramona, La Dee Streeter, Jackie Payne. Personnel: Johnny Otis (vocals, piano, vibraphone, drums); Jackie Payne, La Dee Streeter, Ramona (vocals); Shuggie Otis (guitar, organ); Brad Pie (guitar); Clifford Solomon (alto saxophone, tenor saxophone); Ronald Wilson (baritone saxophone); Larry Douglas , Mack Johnson (trumpet); Joe "Streamline" Ewing, Charley Schofner (trombone); Nicky Otis (drums, background vocals). Recording information: Palm Studios, Altadena, CA. Arranger: Johnny Otis. "There's nothing seriously wrong with..." That's kind of a standard line, if a true one, to describe records by veterans who might be in their tried-and-true style, but really aren't very interesting. And it's an opening line that applies to this 1990 effort, in which the Johnny Otis Show presents its customary R&B variety show, but without the all-stars or future stars that had lent it much of its pizzazz in the long-ago past. You probably haven't heard of anyone on this session aside from the members of the Otis family, including Johnny Otis, Shuggie Otis, and Nick Otis, the vocals taken by Ramona (no last name given), Jackie Pane, and La Dee Streeter. It's not embarrassingly slicked-up or modernized R&B; in fact, it's not slicked up at all. There's just a sense of veterans comfortably going through the routine on this set of journeyman big-band blues/R&B Otis originals, with covers of "Rock Me Baby" and "Baby What You Want Me to Do." Shuggie Otis (on guitar, bass, and organ) is a cult figure in his own right, ...

| | Fall Sinister Waltz CD (1996)
One
$12.39 SINISTER WALTZ is a compilation of various outtakes, B-sides, remixes and live tracks by The Fall. The Fall includes: Mark E. Smith (vocals). In 1996, before the Fall released The Light User Syndrome on Jet, Receiver, a subsidiary of the label (and of Trojan) gained access to a slew of unreleased and rare Fall tracks and began doling them out across a series of CDs. Sinister Waltz was the first of a trio that included Fiend With a Violin and Oswald Defence Lawyer. All three are marked with shoddy packaging, useless liner notes, and a complete lack of documentation. Are these live recordings (if so, when?), demos, or outtakes? At least this first compilation offers some rarities: a cover of Jeff Lynne's "Birthday" (of all things) and the Shift Work-era B-sides "Blood Outta Stone," "The Knight, the Devil, and Death" (an instrumental), and "Pumpkin Head Escapes." Best of the lot is "Arid Al's Dream," a lost Fall song that only appeared in an issue of the CD magazine Volume. In it Smith ruminates over his interest in "prepsycognition" through a tale of the sexually frustrated title character. An unnerving hoot of a song. The sound quality varies throughout, reaching its nadir in "Wings," which has all the hallmarks of a fan's tape recording. ~ Ted Mills Compiling demos from the early-'90s albums SHIFT-WORK and EXTRICATE, along with a handful of live tracks and remixes from the same era, THE SINISTER WALTZ is the first in a series of retrospective Fall CDs released in 1996. OSWALD DEFENCE LAWYER and FIEND WITH A VIOLIN followed, and the three albums were also released as a box set titled THE OTHER SIDE OF THE FALL. A live cover of the Electric Light Orchestra's ...
