Joga album
$6.25 TELEGRAM is a remix album, with altered versions of nine songs from POST and one new song.
TELEGRAM finds Bjork and her comrades polishing the rusty surfaces of pop music, creating new musical formations that glimmer and shine. These songs have been redecorated with the gracious elan that we have come to expect from this charismatic chanteuse. New installations of drum-and-bass textures, orchestral arrangements, trip-hop beats and hip-hop samples are overlaid on the songs from POST, building upon their subtle post-modern beauty.
The Brodksy Quartet offers a modern-classical intepretation of "Hyperballad." "You're Flirting Again" gains a lush orchestration. "Headphones," by contrast, now features a sparse, tundra-like soundscape. The one new song, "My Spine," features Bjork crooning over a primitive backdrop of mystical chimes and bells, creating an organic incantation that sounds miles away from any territory that pop music has traversed thus far.
Personnel includes: Bjork (vocals, organ); Eumir Deodato (conductor); Rodney P (rap vocals); Nestor Garcia (acoustic guitar); Rob Montoro, Graham Massey (guitar); Luciano Iorio, Rob Smissen (viola); Robin Firman, Tony Pleeth (cello); Gary Barnacle (soprano saxophone); Stuart Brooks (trumpet); John Crawford (keyboards); Nico Gomez (bass); David Giovannini (drums); Peter Locket (conga); Evelyn Glennie (exhaust pipes); Luis Jardim, Talvin Singh (percussion); Markus Dravs (sound effects); Howie Bernstein (programming); Brodsky Quartet.

| | Plaid Not For Threes CD (1998)
Joga music CDs
$13.39 As 2/3 of the magnificent Black Dog Productions, Ed Handley and Andy Turner heralded an age of lushly melodic electronic songcraft. The acrimonious fission of BDP produced Plaid and revived the dashed hopes of the duo's earlier brilliance. But, with only one (legendarily rare) album, a fistful of aliases and quiet production assignments, and a few singles in recent years, Plaid had the appearance of an elaborate tease.
If the gorgeous NOT FOR THREES is any indication, Plaid just didn't want to rush perfection. The album seems to be directed at those who would dismiss electronica as soulless music made "for machines, by machines." Plaid's music is bathed in the liquor of life and suffused with shafts of light. Seamlessly working in overlapped synthesized melodies, delicate live instrumentation, occasional voices, and funky, colorful beats, the album offers a textural tapestry of unparalleled lusciousness. "Kortisin," "Rakimou," and "Lilith" are nothing less than ambrosial. Mara, Benet, Bjork, and Nicolette (the latter two repaying old favors) trill like nectar-mad swallows. "Myopia" and "Ladyburst" go tropical without a whiff of exotica irony and beg to be nibbled at like wedges of juicy papaya. Total sensory inebriation-but please don't eat the CD.
Additional personnel includes: Bjork, Mara Carlyle, Leila Arab, Nicolette (vocals); Benet (guitar, violin); Coba (accordion).

Personnel: Mara, Björk (vocals); Benet (guitar, violin); Coba (accordion).

| | Plaid Double Figure CD (2001)
Joga album
$13.79 Inspired to get back to basics after the release of the Trainer retrospective, Plaid returned in 2001 with an LP of tough machine music, closer to the melancholy beatbox style of their mid-'90s singles than the rangy, dynamic sound of 1999's Rest Proof Clockwork. Except for the cycling guitar-like lines on the opener "Eyen," there aren't many traditional-sounding instruments on Double Figure. Instead, the duo balances precise, simple-yet-subtle percussion programs and heavily evocative techno (both have always been Plaid's strong points), cycling through nearly 20 tracks with several shorter mood-setters -- a series of tracks named "Tak" reminiscent of their work on Black Dog Productions touchstones like Bytes and Spanners. As always, Handley and Turner take great care with their productions, using a continually building style of electronic composition that gradually adds new effects, then even more gradually tweaks those effects for maximum subtlety. Working with the same template that inspired Plaid classics like "Choke and Fly" and "Angry Dolphin," the highlights "Squance" and "Assault on Precinct Zero" are raw rhythm tracks outfitted with moody melodics. The duo also works in more atmospheric territory with "Zamami" and "Light Rain" (the latter's warm, fuzzy tones fit the title perfectly). They may have been overly ambitious to stretch techno into new territory by working in traditional sounds, but Plaid recorded one of their most intricate, rewarding, best albums when they finally looked back to the tracks that first made them legends in the techno community. ~ John Bush

| | Our Lady Peace Healthy In Paranoid Times CD (2005) DualDisc
Joga songs
$16.69 This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other.
Though many bands from the post-grunge, alternative-rock boom of the mid-1990s quickly fell by the wayside (remember Sponge or Candlebox?), Canada's Our Lady Peace managed to craft a series of commercially successful albums well into the first decade of the 21st century. Like Matchbox Twenty and Collective Soul, the group has a longevity that can be attributed to a straightforward rock sound marked by catchy pop hooks and emotional, soul-searching vocals, in this case provided by frontman Raine Maida. On 2005's HEALTHY IN PARANOID TIMES, Maida and company strive for the socially conscious urgency of early U2, and this thoughtful approach makes OLP stand out from its peers, particularly on the fast-paced "Where Are You" and "Al Genina (Leave the Light On)," which closes the record in mesmerizingly melancholy fashion.
This dualdisc from the Canadian band includes the album on the CD side and on the DVD side, the entire album in Enhanced LPCM Stero, indepth look at making the album, band interviews, producer interview, and the band's own documentary.
Our Lady Peace: Raine Maida (vocals); Steve Mazur (guitar); Duncan Coutts (bass guitar); Jeremy Taggert (drums).

$43.35 | | Dio Metal Hits CD (2005)
Joga album
$5.99 Multi-instrumentalist and heavy-metal mainstay Ronnie James Dio has built up a hefty back catalog over three decades, with a career that spans vocalizing for Rainbow, Black Sabbath, and his own group, Dio. This best-of, which covers the Dio years exclusively, spans the period between 1983's HOLY DIVER album and 1990's LOCK UP THE WOLVES, and is packed with the kind of high-octane performances Dio fans have come to treasure. Neo-Gothic masterpieces like "Sunset Superman" and "Dream Evil" share space with the metal mysticism of "Last in Line," while Dio's hell's-gate scream holds sway over all.
| | Veruca Salt IV CD (2006)
Joga CD music
$8.89 Not to be outdone by former member Nina Gordon, the L.A.-based alternative-rock band Veruca Salt issued its fourth album in 2006 within months of Gordon's second solo outing. While the latter proved to be a poppy affair, Veruca Salt, fronted by Louise Post, opted for a much edgier, guitar-heavy approach (see the aggressive, angsty "So Weird") that fit hand-in-glove with the act's new relationship with the indie label, Sympathy for the Record Industry.
Veruca Salt: Louise Post (vocals, guitar); Kelli Scott (vocals, bass guitar); Stephen Fitzpatrick (guitar); Nicole Fiorentino (drums).
Additional personnel: Paul Wianco (cello); Jonny Polonsky (piano); Solomon Snyder (bass guitar).
