Audio Mixers: Rick Fowler; Ben Fowler. Recording information: Quad Studios, Nashville, TN. Photographer: Mark Weiss. Brother to Brother marks the first time Johnny and Donnie Van Zant have ever collaborated together, and the results are exactly what fans of either Lynyrd Skynyrd or .38 Special would expect -- a set of tough, bluesy Southern rock. Instrumentally, it nearly achieves its full potential, capturing both of the guitarists in fine form. However, the material is a bit inconsistent, with several songs lacking memorable hooks or melodies. Still, the songs that do work are dynamite, and even the weaker tracks have their moments. And that means Brother to Brother is a worth a listen by any serious Skynyrd, Special or VanZant fan

| | Tex Ritter Blood On The Saddle CDs (1999) (Import) Import; Boxed Set; Germany
Van Zant
$97.75 Recorded between 1932 and 1947. Blood on the Saddle is a deluxe four-disc box set which collects Tex Ritter's recordings from 1932 to 1947, including his complete ARC and Decca sides, and everything from his first five years at Capitol. Over this period, Ritter progressed from spare, folksy readings of cowboy material to his mellow take on Western swing. Perhaps the earthiest of the singing cowboys, Ritter's rich personality and flair for the dramatic come through on these classic recordings. Hits such as "Jealous Heart" and "There's a New ...

| | Dave Clarke Devil's Advocate CD (2003) Import
Van Zant
$15.45 Dave Clarke's vision of hardcore for the headstrong, as practiced on his chart-bound series of mid-'90s Red singles, appeared to have little in common with the climate of mainstream dance in 2003 (electroclash and DJ Hell notwithstanding). A notoriously independent artist, he has never varied his style according to the whims of the marketplace, though his tastes do frequently overlap with the sound of the moment, as happened during 1994-1995 with the Red series and a few years later with his two Electro Boogie mix albums for K7. More so than the brilliant Archive One, this record forsakes the trailblazing Dave Clarke of old with a different figure, one who simply places the Clarke imprimatur on a host of styles he's been championing for years. So, there's a British hardcore track, a Chicago track (featuring no less than Farley Jackmaster Funk on keys and DJ Rush on vocals), a Detroit track (one that's strikingly similar to Carl Craig's "Food and Art"), even a minimalist booty track named "Just Ride" that features co-production from DJ Godfather. Clarke also shows himself an able hip-hop producer, collaborating with Mr. Lif on a track that replaces the usual gangster trademark -- sampled gunshots -- with what sounds like a full arsenal of shoulder-fired missiles and grenade launchers. Another good idea was recruiting Chicks on Speed for two features, the first of which attempts to rejigger Bauhaus' "She's in Parties" into a post-millennial dance smash that ends up mostly successful. Despite the range of features, Devil's Advocate is a very focused record; Clarke is a master of percussion programming, and though these productions wouldn't sound out of their time ...

| | Giant Squid Metridium Fields CD (2006)
Van Zant
$5.99 Personnel: Aaron Gregory (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar, banjo, Theremin); Michael Conroy (drums). Recording information: Hangar, Sacramento, CA (11/2005). For their debut album, California-to-Texas migrants Giant Squid did something that more groups should, perhaps, do -- they not only released it twice, but recorded it twice. Having first put out Metridium Fields on their own, the bandmembers got back together with engineer Billy Anderson to redo it entirely for their initial release on The End Records. As trivia it's fun enough, but the real proof lies in the sound, and what's interesting about this album is that for all the indie metal tags being thrown around, more than anything else it sounds like a dreamy, doomy early-'70s hard rock effort, as if Jefferson Airplane took songs like "Somebody to Love" to a darker place. Soothing, swirling keyboards, the combined vocals of guitarists Aaron and Aurielle Gregory and steady-as-she-goes tempos all help steer the band a bit back towards the past in enjoyable ways, rather than simply trying to relive them outright. A great example is "Versus the Siren," where the synths in particular sound, wonderfully and curiously, like a parallel cousin to those sounds made famous by both '70s funk and Dr. Dre's G-funk empire -- though admittedly that's where the comparisons end. That said, it's also clearly a product of more recent developments -- the growling, barked choruses on "Neonate" are much more reflective ...
| | Kate Wolf Safe At Anchor CD (1979)
Van Zant
$10.45 Personnel: Kate Wolf (vocals, guitar, piano); Cyrus Clarke, David West, Nina Gerber (guitar); Christopher Caswell (celtic harp); Dan Rubin (violin); Darol Anger (cello); Jim Nail (accordion); Bill Griffin (piano). Audio Mixers: Jeff; Kate Wolf; Nina Gerber; Bill Griffin; Bob Shumaker . Liner Note Author: Philip Elwood. Photographer: Ron Blanchette. Arranger: Bill Griffin. While at this point you knew what to expect from a Kate Wolf album, it would be inaccurate to call her work formulaic. Her musical arrangements didn't vary all that much, but each of her compositions was carefully constructed and performed with commitment. That's true of all of the songs here, with occasional tracks (such as "Early Morning Melody") emerging as true standouts. ~ Richie Unterberger 1979's SAFE AT ANCHOR, Kate Wolf's third album, marks some important changes in her career. No longer supported by the bluegrass-inspired backing group the Wildwood Flower, Wolf is able to toy with her arrangements more, running the gamut from simple guitar and voice to the use of tasteful strings and Celtic harps. More importantly, this is also Wolf's first album of all original material, and her first not to be recorded ...
