One-woman cottage industry DiFranco remains true to her cause on her eleventh album (she's a seasoned vet at 28!). Still steadfastly independent, LITTLE PLASTIC CASTLES, like all her previous releases, is available only through her own Righteous Babe label, as DiFranco wards off the majors who offer to make her what she already is; The Next Big Thing. Fans of the female acoustic songwriter gestalt who are too smart for Alanis and too cool for Patty Larkin will find reason to rejoice in this album.
While DiFranco's lyrics still focus on personal politics and modern societal ills, there are expansive touches added to the arrangements of many songs here. "Deep Dish" and several others benefit from some well-placed horn stabs, and pump organ, concertina and talking drum all make appearances. Despite upping the instrumental ante, though, DiFranco's (naturally) self-production remains uncluttered, getting to the heart of her very personal observations.
Japanese edition of her 1998 album with 'Little PlasticCastle' (Hobby Lobby Mix) added as a bonus track, for atotal of 13 cuts. 1998 Righteous Babe release.
"Glass House" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.
Personnel: Ani Di Franco (vocals, acoustic, electric, tenor & baritone guitars, concertina, keyboards, bass pedals, drums, percussion); Jason Mercer (vocals, acoustic & electric basses); Andy Stochansky (vocals, drums, talking drum); John Mills (saxophone, baritone saxophone); Gary Slechta, Jon Hassel (trumpet); Jon Blondell (trombone); Andrew Gilchrist (pump organ); Sara Lee (bass); Jerry Marotta (drums); Mark Hallman, Pat Martin Bradley (spoken vocals).
Rolling Stone (3/5/98, p.66) - 3.5 Stars (out of 5) - "...a clever, thoughtful, relatively quiet record that gets better with every spin....[DiFranco] strums a smart guitar....As usual, her versatile vocal tool is used to great effect, and her grand metaphor-making is in full force..." Spin (3/98, p.130) - 8 (out of 10) - "...An itinerant folkie more concerned with spontaneous mementos than lasting monuments, she cranks out music like that other pixie androgyne contrarian, the Artist. But like his recent work, DiFranco's compositions shine more as personality vehicles than actual songs..." Option (3-4/98, p.83) - "...offers a good example of why she's compelling and confounding; as the melody sweeps you along, you find yourself giving in to her....This may not be your cup of, uh, tea, but she's definately an original." Little Plastic Castle songs
$10.15 Embracing the Glass are the duo Sean Carroll (guitar-controlled sounds) and Jeff Sampson (voice-controlled sounds) and this, their second recording, contains six tracks recorded "in front of a live audience in various venues at various points in time". The level of ambient music depth and texture they achieved in these live settings is quite the achievement. FROM DUST TO DUSK is a beautiful album which veers from ethereal floating minimalism to darker stretches of formless, more abstract, soundscapes. Sampson’s voice, while usually treated somehow (e.g. deep echo) is almost always discernible as being of human origin, and frequently has a haunting and even delicate quality to it. Carroll’s guitar is sometimes recognizable as such, but frequently it’s indistinguishable from a variety of synths. The album begins with the best track, the stunning "Moon Over Pi", which floats on clouds of gossamer notes and spacy washes above which Sampson’s voice gently hovers singing in an unintelligible but beautiful language. His voice has a strong choir-like sound to it, and this makes the song even more peaceful and soothing. "Enchanted" opens with a soft and sad acoustic guitar loop and occasional peals of sparse echoed electric guitar. Here, Sampson's voice is less altered and more straight-forward. I can't discern if these lyrics are an imaginary language or perhaps an ancient tongue, but I don’t think it matters much as his singing is haunting regardless. Synth strings color the background in melancholic shades of deep blue/violet. The track unwinds patiently over its near ten-minute length with subtle variations, yet has a sustained mood of sadness and longing. "Man is Sand" is decidedly more abstract than the first two songs, beginning with an assortment of skitching noise effects and swirling textures but eventually veering into a feedback-like number, drenched in the same wall of sound approach as the duo Hammock brings to their music. "Sombre" resonates better for me, with its strummed and slightly twangy guitar, a-la Twin Peaks, and background reverberating synth textures containing a high-pitched timbre. ...
| | David Bowie Diamond Dogs CD (1974) Limited Edition; Mini LP Sleeve
Little Plastic Castle album
$20.15 After George Orwell's widow refused Bowie the right to use 1984 as the title of his forthcoming album, he instead used the novel as a conceptual blueprint for what became DIAMOND DOGS. Accompanied only by keyboardist Mike Garson, bassist Herbie Flowers, and drummers Aynsley Dunbar and Tony Newman, Bowie played guitar, sax, Moog, and Mellotron, in addition to his contributions as vocalist, composer, arranger, and producer of the album. With the Orwellian themes as a loose backdrop, DIAMOND DOGS has much of the apocalyptic sense of future shock that informed ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS.
While the album doesn't have the musical punch or the songwriting strengths of ZIGGY, its gems make it more than worthwhile. The lush strings and dominant wah-wah guitar of "1984" seem like a nod to Isaac Hayes, while Bowie's howls and snarling sax on the title track make it instantly memorable. The glam rock classic "Rebel Rebel," with its edgy guitar riff and strutting 4/4 beat, is the disc's highlight, and one of Bowie's all-time great songs. Amidst the imagery of a gray, totalitarian future, Bowie injected some optimism by including the nostalgic "Rock 'N' Roll With Me," a good time, rootsy number that presaged his next transformation into the blue-eyed soul singer of YOUNG AMERICANS.
David Bowie fired the Spiders from Mars shortly after the release of Pin Ups, but he didn't completely leave the Ziggy Stardust persona behind. Diamond Dogs suffers precisely because of this ...
