PIPES OF PEACE--the 1983 follow-up to McCartney's TUG OF WAR album--was a more pop-oriented outing than its critically-acclaimed predecessor. Recorded with former Beatles producer George Martin and guest musicians like Ringo Starr and jazz bassist Stanley Clarke at Martin's studio on the Caribbean island of Montserrat, PIPES OF PEACE has a casual, laid-back feel that is perfectly suited to McCartney's breezy pop melodies. The album's best-known song, "Say Say Say," is a propulsive pop-soul duet with Michael Jackson that was McCartney's last single to reach #1 on the American charts.
PIPES OF PEACE also contains "So Bad," a beautiful, smoldering love song that is arguably one of McCartney's most underrated ballads. Though McCartney tries to deliver a big message on the title track, PIPES OF PEACE works best as a pop album and it features a fine mix of upbeat songs and earnest ballads that give McCartney ample opportunity to show off his incomparable voice and peerless musicianship.

Pipes Of Peace album
$6.95 McCartney's third post-Beatles album, and the first credited to his new band Wings, saw the former Beatle continue his exploration of stripped-down, garage-like recording. With Denny Laine on guitar and Denny Seiwell on drums, the overall vibe is similar to that of MCCARTNEY: short repetitive hooks, fuzzed-out electric guitars, mid-tempos, and pleasurable ear-candy throwaways.
This is all fine and dandy because, except for the title track where Paul and Linda are already previewing their vegetarian and pro-animal rights views, the lyrics aren't overburdened with meaning. Musically, though, you can already hear McCartney exploring styles his old band didn't touch upon, as on "Wild Life"'s downbeat, dub-influenced bass line, and the Afro-pop overtones of Laine's guitar melodies. WILD LIFE represents a transitional period for McCarntney: he was working against his own tendencies toward pop grandeur that he had perfected with the Beatles en route to the leaner, streamlined rock sound of the later '70s Wings. The result is a light, fun, almost carefree album.
The irony of the first Wings album is that it seems more domesticated than Ram, feeling more like a Paul 'n' Linda effort than that record. Perhaps it's because this album is filled with music that's defiantly ...
| | Paul McCartney Press To Play CD (1986) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Pipes Of Peace CD music
$10.49 Digitally remastered English version includes the bonus tracks "Spies Like Us" and "Once Upon A Long Ago" (Long Version)).
Opening with the gentle rhythm guitars, slap-back reverb vocals and clean-sounding horns of "Stranglehold," Paul McCartney's PRESS TO PLAY is an exercise in straightforward, feel-good pop music, as only McCartney can do it--sincere in a way you wouldn't buy from too many songwriters. Filled with sonic strokes that might stain the record of a lesser artist, PRESS TO PLAY rises above its now-quaint sounding atmosphere to even further show off McCartney's pure, transcendent gift.
The production of PRESS TO PLAY is a sign of the times-- tight, compressed sounds dominate, gated reverb and heavy chorus guitar (courtesy of the nimble-fingered Carlos Alomar, among others) are but a few of the eighties trademarks which define its sound. What's timeless, though, is McCartney's still-staggering gift for melodic invention. The essence of simplicity, his every note is perfectly placed, from the off-kilter "Talk More Talk" (which even includes Simmons drums!) to the meditative throb of "Pretty Little Head." "Only ...
| | Paul McCartney Wings At The Speed Of Sound CD (1976) Bonus Tracks; Holland
Pipes Of Peace music CDs
$7.05 It's widely accepted that McCartney was never the serious artiste that Lennon was; he never claimed to be, and more importantly (as this album bears out) never needed to be. This 1976 recording found McCartney and Wings at their peak. It's full of glimmering pop gems more concerned with infectious hooks and unforgettable melodies than social relevance.
The opener "Let 'Em In" is almost childlike in its simplicity, and is effective precisely because of that lack of premeditation. "Cook of the House" and "Wino Junko" are good fun, conveying a loose sense of mirth that's both appealing and contagious. The highlight of the album is the near-manifesto "Silly Love Songs," in which Paul makes a case for the everlasting appeal of said compositions, and after a listen to AT THE SPEED OF SOUND, you can't help but see it his way.

| | Paul McCartney London Town CD (1978) (Import) Bonus Track; Remastered; United Kingdom
Pipes Of Peace songs
$7.49 This digitally remastered U.K. edition includes two bonus tracks.
By 1978, Wings had just about reached the end of their tether, and that year's BACK TO THE EGG would be their swan song. McCartney and company's penultimate recording, LONDON TOWN, proved that there was still some life left in the band. The title track is the album's most Beatlesque (and hence one of its best) cuts, slightly reminiscent of "Penny Lane" in both arrangement and subject matter. LONDON TOWN's biggest hit, "With A Little Luck" is typically optimistic and catchy as the devil. Denny Laine takes a vocal turn on the light, somewhat Donovanish "Children Children." The real gem of this album, though, is the obscure "I'm Carrying," a gentle, acoustic-based love ballad that is McCartney ...
| | Paul McCartney Ram CD (1971) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Pipes Of Peace album
$10.49 At the beginning of his solo career, McCartney took the term rather literally, recording virtually alone, playing and singing nearly all the parts himself. Nowhere is that approach more effective than on RAM, arguably his finest solo recording. Admittedly, he had a little help from guitarist Hugh McCracken and a couple of others here and there, but for the most part, this is Paul's show. Instead of succumbing to self-indulgence, though, he used this forum to focus his artistic energies, thus turning out some of the best songs of his post-Beatles career.
The opening "Too Many People" is an appealingly melodic rocker that combines the two sides of McCartney--melodious popster and unabashed rocker--to unprecedented ...
| | Lou Christie/Strikes Again CD (1999)
Pipes Of Peace CD music
$10.69 This two-fer compiles Lou Christie's LPs for the Roulette label. His self-titled debut introduces a singer and songwriter of uncommon substance. Where other teen idols swooned over puppy love, Christie explored the ugly twists and turns of the male psyche with depth and honesty, unleashing the operatic intensity of his potent falsetto to articulate emotions long verboten in popular music. Compare the facile drama of covers like Maurice Williams' "Stay" and Little Anthony's "Tears on My Pillow" to Christie-penned hits like "The Gypsy Cried" and "Two Faces Have I." The latter songs travel into dark, disturbing terrain where no one else dared go, exploring romantic turmoil in ...
