GRAVE NEW WORLD is a 1972 album by the British folk-tinged prog-rock group the Strawbs.
Fulfillment! Singer/songwriter Dave Cousins finds a space somewhere between Bob Dylan and John Bunyan, Hudson and Ford come up with some superb hooks, and the electric sound is powerful and majestic. The music is serious -- perhaps too much so -- bracing, and sincere, if a bit downbeat. Reissued on CD in 1998 in remastered form, the band sounds really loud and close, so you can practically feel the room ambience of the studio. Cousins' electric guitar in "The Flower and the Young Man" crunches right in your ear, and his acoustic fills the room in "On Growing Older," with new notes and two extra tracks. Of the latter, "Here It Comes" (recorded before this album) is bouncy and pleasant enough, even if it doesn't fit the mood of most of the original album, and the previously unissued "I'm Going Home" is one of the best hard rock sides the group ever recorded -- a piece of '70s rock & roll in the manner of Badfinger's "Rock of Ages" and T. Rex's "Get It On," which it resembles. ~ Bruce Eder

Grave New World songs
$15.19 The Archaic Revival includes five diverse musicians from different musical backgrounds and training coming together to form an ecclectic sound. Their CD 'Transformation Number Nine' is a World Fusion tour-de-force that will take you on a musical journey from the rainforests of Peru to American jazz fusion, Irish celtic, music, European classical music, and back again. The CD features the musical talents of Victor Williams of John McLaughlin's 'Heart of Things' project, Bill Curtis and Anna Hubbell of Zapotec/Acoustic Tales, Jon Nazdin of Gypsy Strings, and Jeremy Cubert of The Jeremy Cubert Project, Zapotec, Brave New World, and Quest. Bill Curtis, who penned a majority of the album's twelve tracks, was inspired by his own physical and spiritual travels around the world to write music melding the diverse cultures he experienced with his own musical background. A graduate of the Guitar Institute of Technology ("GIT") and Robert Fripp's Guitar Craft, Bill studied with the great players of our time including Robert Fripp and Scott Henderson to develop his own signature style of emotional, hard hitting fusion and blues featuring intense unison lines, unusual harmonies, and varied rhythms. His critically acclaimed guitar work speaks for itself and showcases his combination of technical prowess and compositional approach to playing. But he was not satisfied to produce a "typical" album. Instead, he sought out players to elevate his music to an emotional level not typically associated with progressive fusion. Victor Williams has performed and/or recorded with Dennis ...

Grave New World album
$14.59 After nearly three years of climbing its way through the heavy metal underground, Newcastle, England-based Satan was all set to record its debut album for Neat Records. But then, in a move more common in the wide world of sports, they suddenly decided to make a trade, swapping vocalists with local act Avenger to land the talents of well-regarded free agent Brian Ross -- he of Blitzkrieg fame. Thus strengthened, the group proceeded to record what at the time surely ranked among the heaviest albums yet recorded -- even within the fast-evolving New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Indeed, 1983's Court in the Act bordered on the yet undefined style of thrash metal, thanks to the frenetic speeds achieved in cuts like "Trial By Fire" and the amazing "Break Free." But the album also boasted more accessible and melodic mid-paced metal fare, putting great effort into the memorable melodies and choruses heard on "Broken Treaties," "Hunt You Down," and early-day favorite "Blades of Steel." The unusual decision to sequence two instrumental tracks ("The Ritual" and "Dark Side ...
