Don't be scared, mom and dad; though the Backstreet Boys employ a little rapping and hip-hop beat wizardy in their dance-pop amalgam, there's no R-rated gangsta mythology at work on their self-titled debut smash. And though this quartet of video-friendly fresh-faced boys has garnered many superficial comparisons to former teen idols New Kids On The Block, the Backstreet Boys sound has a bit more going for it. A more streetwise approach, hook-filled arrangements, a distinctive mixture of rapping and vocal harmonies and an endless supply of floor-shaking dance beats are the distinguishing marks of these platinum-plus pop poster boys.
Swedish edition with one bonus track.
Features 13 Tracks.
Recorded at Cheiron Studios, Stockholm, Sweden; Parc Studios and Platinum Post Studios, Orlando, Florida; Battery Studio and The Hit Factory, New York, New York.

Backstreet Boys album
$8.99 MILLENNIUM was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Album Of The Year and for Best Pop Vocal Album. "I Want It That Way" was nominated for Record Of The Year and for Song Of The Year.
"Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.
The Backstreet Boys self-titled 1997 debut album endeared the group to millions of teens and pre-teens with its radio-friendly blend of pop harmonies and danceable beats. MILLENNIUM finds the Boys in the unenviable position of following up the mind-blowing success of the first album. Less ambitious artists might wither under such pressure, but the Backstreet Boys beat the dreaded sophomore slump in style. In the tradition of the debut, the album is a combination of romantic ballads guaranteed to make your little sister sob, and syncopated, eminently danceable, upbeat tunes. Throughout, it's the rich combination of the members' voices that creates the distinctive sound the group's legion of fans has grown to love. Most notably though, there is an added maturity in both the songs and the performances. It seems, regardless of their fans' fervent wishes, that even Backstreet Boys can't help but grow up.
Additional personnel includes: Chieli Minucci (acoustic & electric guitars); Dennis Gallo (acoustic guitar, keyboards); Dominic Miller, Esbjorn Ohrwall, Jojje Wadenius, Billy Chapin (guitar); Paul Howards (saxophone, ...
| | Spice Girls Spice CD (1996)
Backstreet Boys CD music
$7.85 There's a long tradition in England of kiddie-pop bands who harmonize well, look good, sell syrup by the millions in the U.K. and can't get arrested in the U.S. The Spice Girls smash that mold by adding a point of view. Having more pop hooks than your average bait & tackle shop doesn't hurt either. The five Spice Girls met when they answered a would-be svengali's ad looking for young women who could sing and dance. He got more than he bargained for. They also had spunk, and one of their first acts was to fire him and take control of their own career.
The group co-wrote every song on SPICE, and it's an audacious debut on the order of Madonna's first LP. The girls' songs, like Madonna's, are simultaneously about wanting sex and wanting empowerment; their mantra is "girl power." These are new kids on the block who've actually been around the block a few times. Calling their debut single "Wannabe" is merely the most obvious nod to the queen of pop; they pay further homage in the brazen way they grab for any pop style within reach. Hip-hop, dancehall reggae, dance-club beats and soft balladry and all thrown into this spicy pop stew with utter abandon. Vocal lines are wantonly tossed back and forth among the five like unsuspecting suitors. If they can figure out a way to keep it up, watch out.
Additional personnel includes: Absolute (various instruments); Greg Lester (guitar); Jackie Drew (violin); Tony Ward (cello); Judd Lander (harmonica); Matt Rowe, Richard Stannard (keyboards, programming, background vocals); Dave Way, Pete Davis, Paul Waller, Statik (programming); Mary ...
| | Janet Jackson Velvet Rope CD (1997)
Backstreet Boys music CDs
$11.39 "I Get Lonely" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.
In her most personal and emotionally revealing album to date, Janet Jackson tackles subjects close to her heart, including homophobia, abusive relationships, AIDS, and sexuality. THE VELVET ROPE is deftly produced by longtime Jackson collaborators Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, who have a knack for injecting heavy, emotionally charged themes into musically flawless, stylistically innovative settings. The understated "Got 'Til It's Gone" features A Tribe Called Quest's Q-Tip and a sample of Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi." "What About," an edgy narrative from the perspective of an abused woman, contrasts a romantic, moonlit beach scene with memories of abuse. "Free Xone," highlights Jackson's open-minded perspective on sexuality: "Free to be/Who you really are/One rule/No rules." It is this expansiveness that marks THE VELVET ROPE as more than just another mainstream pop record.
Recorded at Flyte Tyme Studios, Edina, Minnesota.
Personnel: Janet Jackson (vocals, background vocals); James "Big Jim" Wright (vocals, organ, keyboards); Alexander Richbourg (vocals, drum programming); Debbie Morrison, Alyssa Hanson, Shawnette Heard, Tina Landon, Kelly Konno, Miko Salone, Prof. T. (vocals); Q-Tip (rap vocals); Nicholas Raths, David Barry , Mike Scott (guitar); Daria Tedeschi, Liz Sobieski, ...
| | Spice Girls Spiceworld CD (1997)
Backstreet Boys songs
$8.85 Did they actually write the songs, each of which is credited to the Spice Girls plus a couple of songwriting pros? Do Posh and Ginger actually sing on them? Do you really care? In perfect bubblegum form, the Spice Girls capitalize on their moment by releasing their second album in nine months, aping their idols (Madonna, Boy George, the Supremes) even better than they did on the first one, and separating the filler you were expecting anyway with a couple of monster singles you never could have predicted.
The bubbly Motown dance tune "Stop" is either the Supremes filtered through the Archies or Culture Club filtered through St. Etienne--either way, a great lost pop melody hit upside the head by a dollop of new-wave kitsch. "Spice Up Your Life" is the requisite follow-up to "Wannabe," except that it doesn't sound that much like it, and its slinky, Latin-ized beat and fast sing-song rapping are nearly irresistible. Will they be around in another nine months? Do you really need an Andrews-Sisters-in-a-strip-club take on Madonna's "Vogue" ("Lady Is a Vamp")? Do you even care?
Producers: Richard Stannard, Matt Rowe, Absolute.
Engineers: Adrian Bushby, Jeremy Wheatley, Paul Hicks, Mark Tucker.

| | Bon Jovi Crush CD (2000)
Backstreet Boys album
$10.49 CRUSH was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album and "It's My Life" was nominated for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.
When Jon Bon Jovi went into the studio to record his band's seventh studio album, he went from budding actor to Jersey rocker to remind the world where his bread-and-butter was. After the initial plan to team up hard-rock production gods Bob Rock and Bruce Fairbairn fell through due to the latter's death, an audition process was set up with alt-rock engineer Luke Ebbin (Splender) winning the job. The choice was a fortuitous one as here Bon Jovi updates its sound with a smattering of loops and impressive arrangements, without losing the pop crunch of its heyday.
Along the way, Bon Jovi tips its collective hat to the teen brigade invading the charts and the glory days of "Livin' On a Prayer" (the talk-box laden, Max Martin co-written single "It's My Life"), while still writing songs about blue-collar characters full of optimism (the Springsteen-flavored "Two Story Town"). CRUSH also contains the requisite power ballads for Bon Jovi's starry-eyed female fans ("Thank You for Loving Me," "Save the World") along with glam (the Elton John-inspired "Captain Crash & The Beauty Queen From Mars") and grimy ("One Wild Night") rockers.
Recorded at Sanctuary II Studio, New Jersey.

| | Grateful Dead Europe '72 CDs (1972)
Backstreet Boys music CDs
$39.59 Originally a three-LP set, this live document of the band at their largest (an octet if you count non-performing lyricist/official member Robert Hunter) is a well-recorded portrait of one of the Dead's finest eras. The Chick Corea-channeled-through-Floyd Cramer piano of Keith Godchaux had already begun to take the Dead to new improvisational heights, but diehard bluesman Pigpen was still representing the group's roots with his harmonica and gritty vocals.
If you favor the jamming side of the Dead, EUROPE '72 offers a wealth of riches. "Morning Dew," "Truckin'" and other classics are presented in epic versions, spotlighting ...
| | Shipping News Three-Four CD (2003)
Backstreet Boys songs
$13.85 A compilation of three previously released EPs (Carrier, Sickening Bridge, Variegated), Three-Four will be something that the die-hard fans of the Shipping News will not have much of an interest in, seeing as to how they most likely have this material. However, since the EPs are now out of print and will remain that way, the band thought it best to combine all the songs on to one album. What is displayed is a 14-song album of great contrasts with mathy display on some songs ("Haunted on Foot") and noisy electronica influence on others ("Paper Lanterns"). With some help from Elliott's Chris Higdon on "We Start to Drift," Shipping News also covers the eerily ambient sound as well. The same general sound familiar with past works is evident on this album -- those references to Rodan and June of 44 still apply -- but there is a successful degree of experimentation on the songs that is not only tolerable but helpful for an act to constantly remain on top of its game and be relevant with fans. Three-Four certainly shows the Shipping News to be continuing in the right direction. ~ Kurt Morris
