Try Love is songwriter Julie Gold's second album of song demos, and while the arrangements sometimes go beyond voice and piano, the performances are best understood as barebones presentations of the material rather than as professional efforts in the usual sense. Gold has an adequate voice, but occasionally writes a note that is out of her own range, and she is also an adequate pianist whose music never gets very complicated. Heavily influenced by Carole King, as a performer she suggests some of King's own shyness, similarly overcome by a belief in her own work. As Gold's liner notes make clear, many of these songs were written on assignment, though it always seems that they didn't get used by the filmmakers or organizations that initiated their creation. But they hang together thematically, whether Gold is expressing her affection for "Every Living Thing" on behalf of the Audobon Society (which used a Grateful Dead song instead) or hopefully describing "The Journey" of life for the Bette Midler film For the Boys (in which it was not sung). She is nothing if not earnest, with a tone of desperate optimism that always shows the effort it takes to maintain. Going up on the Mountain is a wonderful re-release full of traditional music recorded by Jody Stecher and friends in the mid-'70s. It is comprised on selections from Stecher's first album, Snake Baked a Hoecake, and his entire second album, Going Up on the Mountain. Along with other contemporary singers presenting traditional music, like Hazel Dickens and Dirk Powell, Stecher's music runs deep while remaining in the here and now. His performance of Jean Ritchie's "Black Waters" creates an environmental anthem worthy of John Prine's "Paradise," while the lovely "the Hills of Isle Au Haut" -- performed twice on this album -- sketches the simple pleasures of rural living. Stecher's old-time vocals are a real plus on this album, and the tasteful harmony accompanying him present this material in the best possible light. Stecher's version of "Wild Bill Jones" proves radically different, more old-time and less joyous, than other contemporary versions of this song. This gravity seems appropriate for a song about the murder of a rival over a sweetheart. The most familiar song here is the country music hit "Amanda," here performed in old-time country fashion, complete with Dobro and fiddle. The overall effect of this material is that of a group of friends having a good time, while still remaining professional. Going up on the Mountain also contains the first recordings of Stecher performing with his future wife and singing partner, Kate Brislin. ...

At the beginning of his solo career, McCartney took the term rather literally, recording virtually alone, playing and singing nearly all the parts himself. Nowhere is that approach more effective than on RAM, arguably his finest solo recording. Admittedly, he had a little help from guitarist Hugh McCracken and a couple of others here and there, but for the most part, this is Paul's show.
