George Harrison's only North American tour was in support of this album, which included the singles "Dark Horse" and "Ding Dong; Ding Dong." Critics, who may have been scared off by an opening track called "Hari's On Tour (Express)," were not amused. No doubt they were hoping to hear George, not Hari, on tour. But the album has its pleasures, such as the prodigious pop hook of "Ding Dong; Ding Dong," which isn't nearly as silly a song as its title would have you believe, and nifty little album tracks like "Far East Man." Soap-opera fans are directed to "Bye Bye Love," which is about his wife, Patti, and his best friend, Eric Clapton. Clapton, for those keeping score, had previously expressed his love for Patti on "Layla." Later, he would marry her.

All songs written by George Harrison except "Bye Bye Love" (Felice & Boudleaux Bryant) and "Far East Man" (Harrison/Ron Wood).

Personnel: George Harrison (vocals, guitars), Eric Clapton, Robben Ford, Mick Jones, Alvin Lee, Ron Wood (guitars), Tom Scott (horns, flute), Jim Horn, Chuck Findley (flute), Roger Kellaway, Nicky Hopkins, Gary Wright (piano), Billy Preston (electric piano), Gub Gubi (Moog), Max Bennett, Willie Weeks, Klaus Voorman (bass), John Guerin, Ringo Starr, Jim Keltner, Andy Newmark (drums), Lon and Derek Van Eaton (background vocals).

3 stars Good Album
I was a senior in high school when this was released. I have all of George's releases, and have enjoyed Dark Horse since 1975. Hari's on Tour is excellent-George plays great slide guitar and the feel is loose and funky. So Sad is one of George's best. Maya Love has a great feel to it, as does the title song Dark Horse. The record contains moments of George's best solo work. The voice issus are overblown and add character to the record. I love the record!

3 stars Still Disappointing After All These Years
I remember purchasing this "record" back in 1974 only relunctantly after reading some interviews with George at the time. He seemed to be at his "anti-Beatle" apex, telling the world how he preferred working with almost any other musicians besides his former mates. A review of the album at the time basically stated that all in all it was "a good album". I avoided purchasing the CD until this year only because it came up as a "sale" and George had passed away and over the years he seemed to embrace his past as a Beatle. The album still disappoints. There was so much "buzz" in the air at the time of its release as George was touring and it had been awhile since his last highly successful and satisfying "LPs" had been released. Almost 30 years later I realize why it still disappoints. The general treatment of the songs from production to performance is lackluster - almost an afterthought in many cases and the vocal on Dark Horse is a crime. I realize that he had "commitments" at the time but almost 30 years later I still cringe when hearing it. George was always my favorite Beatle/ex-Beatle even in dire 1974, but this album just doesn't hold up or grow better with age. The best songs are "Simply Shady", "So Sad" and "Far East Man". Not so good/bad are "Hari's On Tour (Express)", "Maya Love", "Ding Dong, Ding Dong" and "It Is 'He'". Just plan embarassing are "Bye Bye, Love" and "Dark Horse".

5 stars great album
I was in 4th grade at the time of this record. I think it is great. Not his best but 1 of his best.

3 stars Not The Disaster You Heard It Was
George faltered here, but not to the extent his critics would have you believe. The singing is sometimes strained ("Simply Shady" and "Bye Bye Love" especially), but generally fine elsewhere. Songwriting is good. Production is OK, though there's an over-reliance on sax and horns. Best tracks: "So Sad," "Dark Horse," "Far East Man," and "It Is He."

Though George Harrison's solo albums for most of the 1970s and early '80s were uneven, often slapdash affairs, 1970's ALL THINGS MUST PASS is a brilliant piece of work. Produced by Phil Spector, whose expansive, majestic arrangements and sonic flourishes suit Harrison's songs perfectly, ALL THINGS MUST PASS eclipses everything the other Beatles recorded at the time (excepting John Lennon's PLASTIC ONO BAND). This sprawling double record gives the impression of Harrison being uncorked and pouring forth all of the songs and ideas ...

Forsaking the introspective, spiritual themes of many of his earlier recordings, THIRTY THREE & 1/3 was perhaps Harrison's finest album since his landmark debut, ALL THINGS MUST PASS. ShocoreDevil Rock DiscoSo what's the name mean? Does it have some cosmic or far eastern connotation?? Nah, not really. It's taken from the nickname for Terry (sho as in sho 'nuf)) Murray and Cory (Core, misspelling courtesy of a local rock writer) White. If any meaning or significance need be attached, it's probably safe to say the name was derived from the creative and collaborative efforts of these two guys.Up to now, White was best known as the front man for defunct Vancouver band DDT. Lessons hard learned but education worth the effort is the description Cory ascribes to his four years and two records with those guys. Following his departure from that band, he took some time off, wrote a lot of new songs and quickly found that he really missed recording and touring. Armed with some new material and a renewed determination, he quickly hooked up with Terry who had been working on tracks for other bands and doing production at Profile and some of the other Vancouver studios. Things clicked creatively, the songs came together amazingly well, and they began bringing in musicians to round out the project. The more they worked, the better it got and over the span of about 5 months, they recorded Devil Rock Disco, a 10 song cd that critics are calling "alternative to alternative rock, with a touch of rap and enough energy to stave off California's dilemma". The reaction to the band and the cd has been nothing short of incredible! The track Bonecracker lit up phones at CFOX where it's been top 10 for 7 weeks, 2 of those at #1, and was just added at Vancouver's XFM following heavy phone requests. CFOX online has gotten strong requests from Canadian ...
Let Go
Avril Lavigne Let Go CD  (2002) (Import) Bonus Track; Japan; Enhanced CD

Dark Horse
CD $34.15  5 stars
"I'm With You" was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Awards for Song Of The Year and for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. "Losing Grip" was nominated for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. Japanese version features the bonus track "Why" as well as an enhanced video. Headstrong and fiercely independent, 17-year-old Avril Lavigne makes a huge splash with her debut LET GO, a collection of confessional songs with attitude reminiscent of fellow prodigy/Canuck Alanis Morissette. Collaborating with producer/songwriter Clif Magness, Lavigne avoids the credibility pitfalls plaguing the brigade of bubble-gum divas that ruled the charts in the late '90s and early millennium by penning her own material. Blessed with a voice that makes her sound ten years older, the self-professed tomboy assuredly asserts herself in relationships (the sing-along breakout hit "Complicated"), admits to emotional vulnerability (a stark "Naked"), and delivers a breezy summation of her life and dreams (the pop manna "My World"). Aided by a simple three-piece back-up band Lavigne and her stellar debut could very well end up picking up where Alanis and JAGGED LITTLE PILL left off. Talk about pressure -- being under 21 and having a record deal no longer qualifies as extraordinary. And as mass-produced teen pop makes its exit and a glut of young singer/songwriters enter, child prodigies no longer have built-in marketing appeal. So if newcomer, 17-year-old Avril Lavigne truly wants to be "Anything But Ordinary," as she sings on her debut album, Let Go, she'll have to dig deeper. Luckily for Lavigne, aside from youth, she does have talent. Her debut runs the gamut from driving rock numbers like "Losing Grip" -- where Lavigne shows off her vocal range, powering into the anger-fueled, explosive rock chorus -- to singer/songwriter pop tunes like "My World," where Lavigne fills listeners in on the past 17 years of her life. Lavigne handles a variety of styles deftly, but she still has some growing up to do lyrically. "Sk8er Boi" has a terrific power pop bounce, but shows her lyrical shortcomings: "He was a punk/She did ballet/What more can I say" -- a lot. The phrasing is awkward and sometimes silly: "It's funny when you think it's gonna work out/Till you chose weed over me you're so lame," she sings on "Too Much to Ask." Not surprisingly, the standout track is the first single, "Complicated," a gem of a pop/rock tune with a killer chorus. But listen carefully and you'll realize that "Complicated"'s sing-song melody borrows just enough ...
For Fox Sake
For Fox Sake CD  (1970) (Import) Bonus Tracks; United Kingdom

Dark Horse
CD $16.19
Originally released on Fontana Records in 1970. Includes liner notes by Steve Brayne. Although it's considered a desirable psychedelic rarity in some collecting circles, For Fox Sake is an also-ran British psychedelic pop album of the sort that was a year or two behind the times upon its 1970 release. The best thing the Fox have going for them on this record is the swirling, at times piercing Hammond organ of Alex Lane. The songs, however, are ordinary trendy U.K. psychedelic pop with some solid vocal harmonies and light shades of soul music ...
