| | Jesus & Mary Chain Sound Of Speed CD - Import Jesus & Mary Chain Discography of CDs
This album from U.K. rock act Jesus & Mary Chain features rare tracks.
The Sound of Speed is second in the trilogy of Jesus and Mary Chain "odds and sods" releases. This one isn't quite as essential as Barbed Wire Kisses (the first), but it definitely holds less cash-cow negativity and greater value over The Jesus and Mary Chain Hate Rock 'n' Roll (the third). The period covered here is 1989-1993, collecting most of the B-sides from Automatic and Honey's Dead. It's not quite complete, missing at least four B-sides ("Subway," "In the Black," "Terminal Beach," "I'm Glad I Never") and a small number of remixes. "Snakedriver" provides the best reason for picking this up, a classic Jesus and Mary Chain song in the sleazy, bluesy, "Beach Boys on lots of smack" mold. "Write Record Release Blues" skewers the Man while poking fun at themselves; one major demand: "Leave me in peaceful abject misery." The radio mix of "Reverence" doesn't sound any friendlier than the original, adding two minutes to the wailing beast and turning it into the dance remix of Big Black's "Kerosene" that it really is. Desperate, immature malevolence doesn't get any better. Speaking of reverence, this offers another clutch of covers, including Leonard Cohen's "Tower of Song" (pleasantly dirgeful), the Temptations' "My Girl" (pointless), Willie Dixon's "Little Red Rooster" (maxed vocal distortion), the 13th Floor Elevators' "Reverberation" (jug-free), and Jerry Reed's "Guitarman" (doesn't quite work). Other highlights in this decent package include the nasty "Lowlife" and an eight-minute version of "Sidewalking" that should please those who like the sludgy battering of the regular version. ~ Andy Kellman
Unavailable in the U.S.! The Sound Of Speed is the JAMC's second collection of odds and ends, mopping up a slew of rarities and B-sides released between 1989 and 1993. The albums Automatic and Honey's Dead brought the band to creative new levels, but these non-album cuts released during this time period show the band stepping out and experimenting. Oddly enough, this comp actually betters those two albums...and then some!.20 tracks including 'Snakedriver', 'Teenage Lust' (Acoustic Version), 'Break Me Down' and many more. Warner. $11.79 Just a few years into their official recording career, the Jesus and Mary Chain had enough B-sides, outtakes, and other things sitting around to warrant a collection of nearly all of them, thus Barbed Wire Kisses. A welcome inclusion is the original debut single on Creation, "Upside Down," which in terms of the mix alone makes Psychocandy ...

| | Rogerio Duprat Banda Tropicalista Do Duprat CD (1968) (Import) United Kingdom
Sound Of Speed music CDs
$15.59 Rogerio Duprat is most known as an arranger of Brazilian tropicalia music, but did also release music under his own name. This 1968 album will undoubtedly be of interest to collectors of '60s tropicalia and/or Brazilian psychedelia, if only because three of the 12 tracks are actually vocal numbers performed by Os Mutantes (though two of those are merely covers of the Cowsills' "The Rain, the Park, and Other Things" and the Beatles' "Lady Madonna"). Overall, it's a bit of an odd endeavor, falling somewhere between easy listening music and the kind of madcap experimentation more typical of his most celebrated clients. It's of a higher class than most easy listening albums, from Brazil or otherwise, however. For even if the predominantly instrumental material is sometimes cheesy (and sometimes ...
| | Westlife Face To Face CD (2005)
Sound Of Speed songs
$11.65 It would be nice if Westlife's management could understand the reasons why "Change Your Mind," an original song written by Euro powerhouse team Steve Mac and Wayne Hector, is the best song on Face to Face, and the first clue would be "original" song. It isn't another ballad trying to re-create the glory of "Flying Without Wings," it isn't a trendy pass and go, Backstreet Boys wannabe, of a Michael Jackson wannabe, song like "Hit You with the Real Thing," and it is not, thank heavens, a cover song to add to increasing evidence that they are a karaoke band. It is a surprisingly old-fashioned song, big and brassy, the kind the Four Tops would have sung. It is important to note that Face to Face is the first real opportunity for the group to move on as a quartet without Brian McFadden, unless you count their album of Frank Sinatra covers. They demonstrate here that they have longevity and can proceed gracefully, but why, oh why, must we be subjected to so many songs we have heard before, without any additional significance given them? Under the direction of Simon Cowell, American ...
