This rerelease of Crispy Ambulance's 1982 debut PLATEAU PHASE contains 13 tracks of Factory Records post punk. This remastered CD contains the 12 inch versions of "The Presence," "Concord Square," and "Sexus."
The one studio album Crispy Ambulance put out over its career, The Plateau Phase boldly aimed to stand out as an experimental rock album and achieved its goal with style and power. With tips of the hat to everyone from early-'70s Pink Floyd and aggro Krautrock to the later song-smashings of Throbbing Gristle, The Plateau Phase isn't an out-and-out masterpiece, but comes awfully close. If anything, the comparisons at the time of release to Joy Division resulted from the label association -- as a singer, Alan Hempsall had a lighter tone than Ian Curtis, while Keith Darbyshire's bass is hardly trying to clone Peter Hook's inimitable surge. The Plateau Phase is certainly a dark, moody experience though, and Chris Nagle turned out to be as crucial for setting a sonic mood for the Crispies as Martin Hannett did for Joy Division. Given the similar influences, the best contemporary band to draw comparisons to might be early Public Image Ltd., but with much less dub and more general melancholy. The mix is often thick, echoing, and understated, only coming up for air with some instruments at times, if at all. Consider "Travel Time," where the brisk drum hits lead the way as the guitar, bass, and especially Hempsall quietly lurk beneath, forcing attention more closely onto them as a result. Hempsall in general has some lyrics perhaps too readily calling to mind "lost in the wilderness" post-punk scenarios already becoming clichéd, but his restrained, dreamlike delivery makes them work better than a flat, declamatory style. Even the occasional wails are set back, strange and curious to hear. Song titles -- "Death From Above," "We Move Through the Plateau," "Simon's Ghost" -- further heighten the dark, almost psychedelic mood. Call it goth if one wants, but there's more going on here than Batcave-inspired shenanigans. Later CD reissues included the "Live on a Hot August Night" and "Sexus" singles as bonus tracks. ~ Ned Raggett

Plateau Phase music CDs
$8.99 CEMA Special Markets' Play the Hits is different than the similarly titled Only the Hits in one key way -- it actually has the Ventures' hit singles! Of course, Play the Hits has a title that suggests it might be a collection of the Ventures playing other people's songs -- which is what Only the Hits was, and that had a title that suggested it was a straight hits collection. Budget-line discs always get confusing like this. Anyway, Play the Hits is a good collection, containing all of the basics -- "Walk, Don't Run," "Blue Moon," "Lolita Ya-Ya," "Secret Agent Man," "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue," and "Hawaii Five-O" -- which is enough to make it a very worthwhile budget-line disc. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
All Time Greatest Hits is a decent overview of the Ventures' early days, presenting 12 hit tracks that the instrumental band recorded in the late '50s and early '60s. Several of their Top Ten hits are included: "Hawaii Five-O," "Perfidia," "Men," "Lullabye of the Leaves," and "Walk - Don't Run", probably their biggest hit. Considering the amount of material the Ventures have released over the years, this collection is missing a few favorites ("Walk Don't Run '64," "Out of Limits"), but the midline pricing and original tracks make this ...

| | Rick Wakeman Journey To The Centre Of The Earth Plus CD (1974)
Plateau Phase album
$13.89 Journey to the Centre of the Earth is one of progressive rock's crowning achievements. With the help of the London Symphony Orchestra and the English Chamber Choir, Rick Wakeman turns this classic Jules Verne tale into an exciting and suspenseful instrumental narrative. The story is told by David Hemmings in between the use of Wakeman's keyboards, especially the powerful Hammond organ and the innovative Moog synthesizer, and when coupled with the prestigious sound of the orchestra, creates the album's fairy tale-like climate. Recorded at London's Royal Festival Hall, the tale of a group of explorers who wander into the fantastic living world that exists in the Earth's core is told musically through Wakeman's synthesized theatrics and enriched by the haunting vocals of a chamber choir. Broken into four parts, the album's most riveting segment, entitled "The Battle," involves Wakeman's most furious synthesized attack, churning and swirling the keyboards into a mass instrumental hysteria. With both "The Journey" and "The Forest," it's the effective use of the strings and percussion section of the London Symphony Orchestra that causes the elements of fantasy and myth to emerge from the album's depths. The gorgeous voice of Ashley Holt is effectively prominent, and some interesting guitar work via Mike Egan arises occasionally but meritoriously amidst the keyboard fervor. The whole of Journey to the Centre of the Earth still stands as one of the most interesting conglomerations of orchestral and synthesized music, and it is truly one of Wakeman's most flamboyant projects. ~ Mike DeGagne
