| | Syd Barrett Madcap Laughs CD - Import Syd Barrett Discography of CDs
The plaintive voice-cracking wail of "Won't you miss me / won't you miss me at all?" in "Dark Globe" could just as easily have been directed at a departing lover or the fanbase that Syd was separating himself from at the time through chemical abuse and reclusive behavior. The most compelling song lyrics on MADCAP, however, were not even written by Barrett, but by fellow spiritual expatriate James Joyce. The unlikely collaboration "Golden Hair" is among the most haunting songs ever committed to vinyl. MADCAP is a rich distillation of the triumph of creativity over self-destruction.
UK reissue of Pink Floyd founder's first album. Featuring Roger Waters and Dave Gilmour. 13 tracks all written by Barrett. Includes 7 bonus tracks 'Octopus' (Takes 1 & 2), 'It's No Use Trying' (Take 5), 'Love You' (Take 1 & 3), 'She Took a Long Cold Look at Me' (Take 4) and 'Golden Hair' (Take 5).1994 release. Standard jewelcase.
When Syd Barrett departed Pink Floyd for a solo career after (minimally) contributing to A SAUCER FULL OF SECRETS in 1969, expectations naturally ran high. Aside from being Floyd's primary songwriter, singer, and guitarist, Barrett had already developed the reputation for being a twisted child prodigy. Taking a turn away from Floyd's complex layered psychedelia, Barrett's solo debut, MADCAP LAUGHS, revealed the singer/songwriter to be a somewhat gentle, reflective poet. Although MADCAP is not as lyrically obscure as most of Barrett's work with Floyd, the album nonetheless proves that Barrett could mutate a simple love song ("Love You," "She Took a Long Cold Look") past the realm of the expected into something chilling.
Personnel: Syd Barrett (vocals, guitar); David Gilmour (guitar, bass instrument); Vic Saywell (tuba); Mike Ratledge (keyboards); Hugh Hopper, Roger Waters (bass instrument); John Wilson , Robert Wyatt (drums).
Q (5/97, p.134) - "...THE MADCAP LAUGHS remains a breath of fresh air--basic and quite beautifully bonkers." Madcap Laughs Review

Madcap Laughs album
$11.85 This set by Swans and Angels of Light frontman Michael Gira and Windsor for the Derby frontman Dan Matz is a small wonder of sophisticated songsmithing and an exercise in complete collaboration -- something that (on this level at least) wasn't happening either in the pop or indie rock worlds at the time of this album's release. There is a relaxed, airy feeling in these songs, and a remarkable consistency of purpose and production in that they were recorded over two years at irregular intervals. There is the blissed-out drift and swoon in "Pacing the Locks," with Matz on lead vocals barely articulating his words above the guitars and Gira's layered backing chorus. And on "Is/Was," there is a long, sleepy/slippery guitar intro before a snare and a tambourine enter in the distance. Basses begin to interweave the folk-blues guitar line, as it drones into vocal. If Bob Dylan is making blues records from a school that never existed properly as blues, then these cats are making a mutated kind of modal blues that comes from the memory of a music never even heard.
Other standouts on the disc include the Mattel drum-machine hypnosis of "17 Hours," with its twin guitar ostinato and droning keyboard lines punctuating a chanted vocal by Gira. With more power it might have been a Swans tune, but there is a deviation in the rhythm that sounds like a steel drum filling in the phrases, though it may be a guitar; it's difficult to tell. There is a Middle Eastern atmosphere, as more droning instruments enter the mix, that is both astonishingly beautiful and texturally oppressive. Yet, this is balanced with the simplicity of "Quiet One," ...
| | Sex Pistols Great Rock N Roll Swindle CD (1979)
Madcap Laughs CD music
$12.35 Principally recorded live at the 76 Club, Burton Upon Trent, England on September 24, 1976. Includes liner notes by Kosmo Vinyl.
Originally released in 1979 as the soundtrack to a documentary that marked the rocket rise and flaming crash of the Sex Pistols, THE GREAT ROCK & ROLL SWINDLE was really Pistols' manager Malcolm McLaren's cinematic (and vinyl) potshot at the music industry he despised. Engaged in vicious legal battles with Johnny Rotten, Warner Brothers Records and Virgin Records, McLaren fought back in the only way he knew how -- by raising hell and documenting the whole bloody mess.
By the time THE GREAT ROCK & ROLL SWINDLE was released, the punk-era soap opera had ended: Sid Vicious was dead and Rotten had formed Public Image Limited. Probably best known for Vicious' tortured deconstruction of "My Way," the 21-track compilation features seven tracks by the Pistols -- even though Rotten only appears in the film via archival footage-as well as songs by Tenpole Tudor, Ronnie Biggs and others. Curiosities abound, including a French version of "Anarchy in the U.K," drunken rugby songs, and the fey, McLaren- crooned "You Need Hands." Both ragged and riveting, THE GREAT ROCK & ROLL SWINDLE is a fascinating, screaming document of the tattered remains of one of the most explosive moments in rock history.
For a band that rescued rock & roll from the Uriah Heeps of the world in the late '70s, and made a mark on everything that followed, the Sex Pistols left behind precious little in terms of their recorded legacy. Their only official release being the earth-shattering NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS, enthusiasts have to turn to collections of outtakes and live material to further satisfy their Pistols jones. A good place to start might be RAW, which features both rare live cuts and four demo tracks from these punk pioneers. While the demos are worth investigating, it's the live recordings that are truly enlightening, offering a more intimate look into the band's musical infrastructure. The Pistols' roots can be seen in punked-up versions of the Who's "Substitute" and The Stooges' "No Fun." Live takes of album tracks such as "Anarchy in the UK" and "No ...
