| | Isaac Hayes Shaft (Deluxe Edition) CD (1971) Bonus Track; Remastered; Deluxe Edition
Pure CD music
$9.75 Despite its codification into our collective pop culture consciousness, Isaac Hayes' "Theme From Shaft" is a highly original composition. It's been remade by Hayes himself for the remade Shaft film, and appropriately kicks off this collection of tunes from the movie by some of R&B's New Jacks.
A diverse selection of artists encompass the collection, from lascivious soul stirrer R. Kelly to the rugged Latin hip-hop of Fulanito, along with many other noteworthy diversions that represent the many flavors of contemporary urban soul. Most of the material focuses on John Shaft's street smarts and bravado, or the film's pimps, hoes, and gangsta imagery. As expected, Southern hip-hop is well represented, with Outkast, Mystikal, and Big Gipp from Goodie Mob contributing. The tracks offer typically gritty observations on street life, over bleak, minor chords and busy percussion. T.I.P. featuring Beanie Sigel offers "2 Glock 9's," one of the soundtrack's most rugged grooves, a minimal, stripped-down ...

Pure album
$15.49 Functioning as something of a replacement for the 2001 collection Their Greatest Hits: The Record, The Ultimate Bee Gees covers much of the same ground as that double-disc set, albeit in not quite so linear a fashion. The Record marched through its 40 tracks chronologically, opening with the stately baroque Beatlesque pop of the '60s and then winding through the '70s, whereas this opens with the bright, fabulous blast of "You Should Be Dancing" and remains in their late-'70s heyday for a while before fast-forwarding ...

$6.39 ~ Jill Criscuolo ~ Her musical journey conspicuously began at age 13, and in an interesting story-tale wrapped in the fabric of a ritual of her culture, Jill found her thrill. In that instant, breaking out in song, music began to play an integral part in the soundtrack of her life. The personable teen remained active in various aspects of performing over the years. As we fast forward to the present, she is coming into her own intent on building on her ever-developing abilities to venture into acting and modeling. Emerging as an unclassifiable performer, she has evolved from amateur to professional after having displayed her flair to many a crowd. Seasoned from years of vocal training, recitals, acting in musicals, and dancing, her performances of cover songs then ...

| | Ancient Civilisations Of Southern Africa CD (2005) (Import) United Kingdom
Pure songs
$27.59 A collection culled from a series of previous releases of African music on ARC, Ancient Civilizations of Southern Africa takes a stab at covering the vast cultural ground of the lower half of the continent, involving the multiple groups within the San, the Qwi, the Tsotho, and the Nguni peoples. While this seems a profitable venture for all, there's a catch. The pieces aren't grouped by peoples, by instrument, or by theme. They're simply put together. As a result, the album jumps from mbaqanga to a Venda horn piece to Zulu percussion to a bush song, and back to choral music. As such, it can be a bit schizophrenic. Nonetheless, the music quality is good, and the recording quality is quite good for relatively authentic African recordings. The various albums that went into the creation of this one may be more satisfying on their own, but this still makes a decent starting point for further exploration. ~ Adam Greenberg
The follow-up to the previous Ancient Civilizations of Southern Africa, which included music from the Xhosa, the Zulu, the Venda, the Bushmen, and more, Volume 2 narrows the focus to the Venda alone. The core of the music is in the collective vocals of the group, with one or two singers starting out, and the rest of the group joining in for a partial climax. As the music continues, the massive war drum is incorporated for rhythm and sheer power. On top of this are layers of women's ululations and ankle shakers here and there. The songs cover a range of traditional topics, largely relating to ...
