Serious art rock fans would not consider this compilation to represent the best of the group, as it concentrates on their early pop-oriented singles of the late '60s and early '70s, not their most ambitious, conceptual 666 period. If psychedelic pop is more your bag, though, it does signify their best phase, including of course their big 1968 European hit (which made number 30 in the U.K.), "Rain and Tears." This is actually, at its core, more akin to sentimental Mediterranean pop than far-out psychedelia. Leading the way is Demis Roussos, whose quavering vocals are similar in some respects to those of the Bee Gees' Robin Gibb, though they can be gratingly cloying in a way the Bee Gees rarely were. Unfortunately, this is missing the 1969 B-side "Marie Jolie," one of their best songs. ~ Richie Unterberger

This 1991 followup to 1987's successful CANCIONES DE MI PADRE continues Linda Ronstadt's innovative musical exploration of her roots. Once again, producer and arranger Ruben Fuentes is on hand to provide authentic orchestral accompaniment to classic Mexican songs handpicked by Linda and her brothers, who sing together as a trio on several tracks. The orchestra is also bit smaller this time, which perhaps accounts for Ronstadt's greater confidence in presenting this delightful material. What strikes the listener again is how different Ronstadt sounds performing this material. She swoops and sways and twists her syllables like a native, while manifesting a highly expressive sob never heard when she sings in English.

This superb compilation, often called "the red album," brings together the majority of the Beatles' hits from the early to mid '60s. Consequently, it plays like an overview of the some of the most popular and indelible rock songs of all time.
