| | Shirley Bassey Diamonds Are Forever: Remix Album CD - Import Shirley Bassey Discography of CDs
For most American listeners, Shirley Bassey is best known as the singer of songs associated with James Bond movies (especially the theme song for GOLDFINGER). But in her native Britain, "Bassey The Belter"--nicknamed for her powerful wall-of-sound style--is well-known as an interpretive pop singer. On this remix collection, many of the electronic dance scene's most notorious DJs and mix-masters have a go at de- and re-constructing Bassey's best tracks. These sonic sculptors include Mantronik, Nightmares On Wax, Groove Armada, and Propellerheads. This REMIX is not for old-school fans of unadulterated Bassey, but club denizens will find a lot to groove to here.
A unigue return to the catalog of Europe's preeminent Diva. Thanks to her success with the Propellerheads in the dance arena, several leading remixers have reinterpreted her classic gems: Moloko, Kenny 'Dope' Gonzales, Groove Armada, Nightmares On Wax & More. The cover art on this version shows Bassey in one of her trademark poses, remarkably different than the US version which depicts her as the Jetson's maid Rosie.Uncut (10/00, p.78) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Cutting-edge producers and remixers...take on her big brassy Sixties ballads and splice the living daylights out of them....There's a good mix of healthy respect and cheeky rebellion..." Alternative Press (5/01, p.70) - 4 out of 5 - "...GOLDFINGER and DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER hold this set in place, as [the groups] drain 10 vintage performances of all but their smokiest, sexiest, torch tones, reinventing the songs as truly stylish Bondian epics..." Diamonds Are Forever: Remix Album
$6.05 Tony Bennett signed with Columbia Records in 1950, topping the US charts the following year with 'Because Of You' and 'Cold, Cold Heart'. Other 50s hits included 'Just In Time' and 'Stranger In Paradise'. 1958's 'Firefly' was Bennett's last US Top 40 entry until 1962, when he made a major comeback with 'I Left My Heart In San Francisco'. Bennett's other 60's hits included 'I Wanna Be Around', 'The Good Life', and 'If I Ruled The World'. However, his future lay with concerts and albums, including I Wanna Be Around, and The Many Moods Of Tony. In the 70s, Bennett left Columbia and his return in the mid-80s produced The Art Of Excellence, which included a duet with Ray Charles. In 1993 and 1994 he received Grammys for Perfectly Frank and Steppin' Out. He was 'discovered' by younger audiences following his appearances on the David Letterman Show and MTV's Unplugged. The latter teamed him with k.d. lang and Elvis Costello. Bennett's star ...
| | Barbra Streisand Stoney End CD (1971)
Diamonds Are Forever: Remix Album
$6.89 Barbra Streisand a folkie? There are definitely elements of a hippy-ish, slightly more avant garde Barbra on this Top 10 album from 1971. The title track, Streisand's first Top 10 single in over six years, was written by Laura Nyro, as is "Hands Off The Man (Flim Flam Man)." So there is definitely a Nyro sensibility to the record. Still relatively early in her career, the amazing vocal ...
